Time Consuming ep #53 is here, and today I’ll go over a song that has been requested many times in the comments called: ‘Contortionist’ by Their Dogs Were Astronauts.
This song takes the guest vs host system and exploits it to its limits with some deliberate orchestration ideas and an advanced rhythmic approach.

    Dude that's so amazing! 🔥🤘🏻
Let's talk about tracking drums, that sounds like a cool project!
Also a little more insights into how we wrote this:
The drums are programmed and we didn't "think" about this groove. We started out with the guitar intro and played the drum groove over it on our midi keyboard by instinct because it felt like the right feeling for this "riff".
We didn't analyze what was really going on until later, haha

Great video!!! At 3:15 the length of each clean guitar note changes to 3/16 (4/16 before) and plays it 22 times so 3*22=66 quarter notes length for the clean guitar pattern. BUT at 3:32 we now understand that the length of the clean guitar pattern follow a simple 4/4 drum so 4*16=64 quarter notes so it's different than 66, 2 quarter notes are missing in the clean guitar pattern. That's where the trick is, the guitar doesn't repeat 22 times 3/16 notes but 20 times 3/16 and twice 2/16 (3*20+2*2=64) ! :)
PS : I'm doing a PhD in math and music and I really love your videos 🤘

At the song's 3:15 mark, the clean (?) guitar is playing constant 2 bars of 11/4 in 8th notes. BUT the 2nd bar is extended to a 13/4 with the crazy synth part starting from 11 for 3 quarter notes. The distorted guitar is playing in a 3-3-5 fashion in the 11/4 bar with the 3 being accented at 1 & 2 and the 5 accented at 1,2, 3 & 4.

I might not be able to explain it best but triplets should be evenly spaced out. The space between the last note and the downbeat is much shorter than the previous notes.
Try to play 9 notes in those 2 *beats trying to match the accents, you'll find the last 2 notes have to be rushed. (RLL RLL RLL)

@@wrytte but are you counting the pulse as quarters or eights? I feel the triplet if i count it in quarters, anyways i'll try what you said

@@cymapsis Quarters, but it wouldn't really matter for this specific thing. The issue is the note spacing, triplets are completely even whereas this figure is 3+3+2. At high tempos they do sound very similar (honestly I heard it as a triplet too until he pointed out the actual subdivision) but they're different enough that if you play one while everyone else is playing the other it'll sound extremely messy.

@@cymapsis quarter note triplets and dotted 8ths are are a fraction of a space apart, so it sounds tricky. I would recommend to slow it down and try playing 16th notes with the dotted eigth accents, and and then compare to eigth note triplets playing quarter triplet accent.

The part in 3:15 is technically very similar to the intro, just with shorter notes, so it's not 4/4 with the melody in 4/16ths over drums in 5/16ths but 4/4 with the melody in 3/16ths over drums in also 3/16ths, which is clear in the part after when the melody stays in 3/16 but the drums play in 4/16 (with the kick drum combining both host and guest side). Now I kinda miss 4/4 with the melody in 3/16ths over drums in 5/16ths...
