~About Hoosier Hardware~
Hey folks! I just want to welcome all the fellow techy folks to the channel. I focus on PC hardware, but that doesn't prevent me from occasionally working with other tech as well. Hope you enjoy the content, and thanks for dropping by!

7:52 Why I'm Sticking with Framework
#Framework #Laptop #Modular - Věda a technologie
1. Hinge: My hinges are way more robust and holds a lot stronger with little wiggle. What batch was your laptop from? There were hinge quality issues in some of the earlier batches. I'd say send a message to support and see what your options are
2. Sleep/Hibernate: I noticed this to an extent but I'm also just in the habit of completely shutting down my laptop any time I'm not using it since boot time is damn near-instant. I also keep my laptop on the battery saver preference most of the time if I'm not plugged in.
3. Fingerprint sensor. I've not noticed any failure/delay in registering my fingerprint either on boot or from sleep. In fact, I was just playing with it last night marveling at how I can practically just brush the sensor, and boom I'm in. Like with the hinge maybe you just have a bad/finicky one.
4. Speakers: Yeah my impression of the speakers is "not great but not terrible". I have a pair of type C earbuds I use and my wireless earbuds as well so I don't use them often.
5. Trackpad: I have also noticed some click failure issues but I predominantly use a Logitech G604 so that I have extra buttons to move between desktops, cut/copy/paste, and other frequent commands.
i definitely have both the fingerprint sensor and trackpad issue and both are frustrating. I've followed their "fix" for the trackpad but it doesn't seem much better
@@lr7974 what was the fix they recommended?
They updated the hinges at some point with the gen 1. If you contact support, they might send u new hinges or just order them from the store.
They also sell 2 types of hinges in their marketplace with different stiffness levels as of now.
@@chlorophyllphile that's dope
a lot of these issues were either defects they fixed and offer on their market like hinges which are available on their store OR they will swap out per warranty like the touchpad. I had my touchpad swapped real quick after i reached out to em.
I don't think we'll have much of a choice considering all the shortages in the world and other issues humanity is facing + the fact that this industry generates so much pollution and that people replace their device so often, even when they're still capable, it should honestly be the bare minimum that every manufacturer does to reduce waste. Kudos to them. But you should have titled your video with something less negative. That could be a turn off for many consumers, you could have phrased it "5 things framework can improve etc", how can we hope more devices like this to be made if we already dig their grave before most people could even be informed about their existence.
I agree. Your title makes it seem like you HATE Framework laptops. If you like framework, as you stated in your video, you should change the title of the video or make a new video with all the good things about framework, while addressing these minute details that can easily be fixed in the next version.
@@gianyrox While this is more of a critique of CZcams, it's algorithm and the practices of content creators across all of CZcams. I 100% agree.
The title of this video is... Egregious.
@@cglegg clickbait lol
On point 2, double-check whether there is a "Hibernate after" time set in the advanced power options. On my laptop, it's set to automatically hibernate after 6 hours. Obviously if you put it to sleep but it then goes into hibernation, it'll definitely make it take longer to come back up.
There’s a deeper issue with the RTC battery, which is rechargeable, not charging off the battery pack when the computer is off and eventually discharging.
I’d add as a major complaint that they apparently don’t have an open source BIOS.
Iirc there's something on the framework subreddit about the loose hinge being a defect, and how you can get a free replacement/new laptops don't have that issue
Thanks for the info. Any idea about problem trackpads?
There is a hinge upgrade now.
All good points! Have you tried out the new hinges? What do you think?
Great content, Shane. Keep up the great work!
They upgraded their hinges with the newer model and the upgrade kit when it is available
The problem I've had with two consecutive Dell XPS13s is that they wake themselves up after you put them to sleep and put it in your bag. You hear the fans because the computer is on and trying to cool.
Did you have this issue with the Framework? I'm interested in one.
Thanks for the video
You've got a defective hinge. It is not supposed to be that loose. Support will send you a good one for free.
I got my Framework 16 on May 1st. Put Linux Mint Edge edition on and am loving it, with 64 GB RAM.
Framework is way too expensive for how many quirks it has. 1000 dollars can get a very nice laptop
The upgradeability is not even feasible, I just looked at how much a mainboard upgrade costs and they're 600-1000 dollars to upgrade to a i5/i7 12th gen...
It just doesn't make sense to buy a framework laptop other than for the principal of buying something "repairable"
The only one of these issues I have is the last one, and I agree that there's something going on with the trackpad. I don't think it's a software issue, because I have exactly this same issue on Linux. October batch, if it matters.
Someone said that you can get it replaced via the warranty
Looks like they already released a stronger hinge and it sold out!
Yep, and they released it very shortly after this video. That's why I LOVE the modularity here. They can keep upgrading individual parts of the laptop.
Is the fan loud without load/ with load?
There is a battery bug that causes the tiny RTC battery to drain after just a few days. You then have to remove all the batteries to get it to boot. They recommend you charge the laptop for 24 hours every now and then but not had to do that with any other laptop. You have a laptop that you cannot trust to 'just work' when you open it up after a few days. Not an issue if you use it all the time but some of us don't. No fix apparently for 11th gen board owners. So yeah it might be fixable...but at a cost of $800 for a new next gen board. Yay!
Why is one finger open of your laptop so important? How many times do you actually do that and how hard is it to just use two hands?
Its not important it just shows that the laptop is made well, because it has a weighty bottom but light screen
Well, TBH, I feel this could also be windows 11 issue. Well, I use arch linux but I heard from many of my friends ( as they use windows 11 ) that they face so many bugs and issues in windows 11
arch btw
@@leowhitehead LOL
it runs really hot and the fans are loud.
I respect this list. These are things in theory that they could work on
I like mine, it arrived in mid march earlier this year. Got it mainly for digital privacy/security reasons, not to offend, but eco friendly is just not really a priority for me. Fedora Linux works with secured boot and has awesome security defaults. However, since switching from Manjaro it has been much harder to get some software I used to use working on my this new os. Still a novice so more like a me problem lol. I kinda agree with the suspend thing and power, I can’t just shut down and turn back on all the time because my pc is encrypted which makes it take quite a while on fedora. However, I feel like upgrade to a drive with P-cores should help the problem fix better battery life and more performance :)
Can you get a falcon laptop and review it on your show?
I'd love to, but I just don't have those kinds of resources available for the channel.
Mine is the last gen, but also last release, so I have the better hinges and touchpad. I'm running Fedora 36, and don't hibernate, so I haven't seen most of your issues. The speakers, however are indeed shite. Even just YT vids are noticeably bad. Waah! (Fine with headphones, though.)
I suggest you contact support and see what they can do for you.
I have recently been experiencing issues with my gaming pc that I built just two years ago! I have no idea what’s wrong and fear that one of my components is broken. I will be playing and my pc just goes to no signal out of nowhere, without warning. I’ve tried using a different monitor, different cable, I’ve cleaned my ram, I’ve updated the drivers and nothing. Please help!
U tried looking at temps? Ill be happy to try and help
@@GrindThunderer Thank you but fortunately I’ve fixed the problem. Thanks for the offer anyways!
Great concept these laptops being upgradable 🥰👍. But in the scheme of things, most people on forward or sell their old laptop 💻 to others so they don’t necessarily just go to waste. But having a part that is user replaceable is a quick and more budget friendly repair option 👍😇
That's fair. The big upside of premium laptops (especially Apple) is that they hold their value relatively well for at least awhile. I'd be fascinated to talk to IT people from companies that service their own machines to see how likely it would be for a company to go this route because they're so much easier to work on.
So the majority of your issues are windows problems, not framework.
None of them were windows problem expect maybe the sleep one even tho there were hardware issues which was causing the sleep issues.
Another CZcams reviewer commented about the hinge and trackpad problems and unsatisfactory speaker issue.
Loose hinge is a manufacturing defect, you can get a replacement from framework for free I believe
"Im happy w my 1500$ laptop because i can easily upgrade crappy stock hardware paying extra"
Im glad this makes you happy!
He didnt contact support, sounds like a lot of these issues have been addressed since this was posted
@@campbellwinslow6986 crappy speakers and hardware-broken trackpad have been addressed? Without "contacting support"?
My approach to e-waste: buy a good normal machine, pray and maintain it 10+ years. No need to spend 2x cash to buy a modular system with crappy components.. Am i right?
@@Count.Zer0 but you will pay 2x cash, if you want to upgrade your laptop after 2 or 3 years of use.
in the case of framework, you only pay like 1/2 for each upgrade, and use your old board for another purpose, like home media center.
@@yingmo6910 Dont mean to be too anal, but i honestly disagree.
1. Pay 2x if you upgrade every 2 years? Well planning to spend 1500usd every 2-3y means you really wanna upgrade to the latest tech available and always want new mechanics -> You get a much "better" service if you spend so much. And youre left with 3-4 good laptops every decade xD.
2. An upgrade mobo / upgrade kit are respectively 400 / 500$. For midrange i5 CPUs... Like upgrading your 30k$ car engine for 10k$..
3. After all, this doesnt even cover my initial criticism: some components show poor quality from day zero -> making them replaceable doesnt completely offset the fact that they're crappy.
I love the idea of maintainable laptops, but this example seems to me an expensive inferior laptop :/
If your ideal machine is a laptop with midrange CPU, no dedicated graphics and few ports, you'll be better off with a decently built midranger. Or with a toptier that you simply keep healthy for longer.
PS. Im not at all pro consumism. Just against overpriced complex solutions as much as im against consumism.
Im a lucky guy. Spent 900$ in 2015 for a relatively decent "multimedia" laptop. Even mediocre cooling system. After 7y of abuse and repasting the chassis is quite worn down, but everything is functional (not the battery) and my i7 4th gen is still surprisingly capable.
Framework laptops are incredibly overpriced for what you get. I would like to see more options as I use Linux and most of these framework like laptops tend to go with not great hardware for many distros. Fingerprint readers tend to save in plain text but so do web browsers.
I afraid I can not like this vid because of the awefull Zuckerbergy title.
