  • Pickleball is a game of scoring runs. If you have ball in hand, your opponents cannot score. So, if you get behind, do not give up.

That last shot that was called long looked like it easily caught the line...guess you didn't see it either.

Why does a slice spin off the serve give an advantage to the opponent any more than other times a slice spin is used?

Thanks for asking. It gives an advantage on any shot, whether it be a return of serve or other shot. I think it's more noticeable on a return of serve because it's usually hit from deep in the court.

Because slice makes the opponents top spin easier and more heavy coming back...meaning you'll have a tougher time returning the ball.

Backspin returns are more common at the lower level play. It’s simple physics. Some call it “spin continuation”. You can see the backspin return just by watching the returners paddle follow through. So there’s no surprise at all. Assuming it’s the 3rd shot just elect to use a drive with plenty of top spin. This will put plenty of pace on the ball and increase the difficulty for your opponent to execute a 4th shot successfully.

Some players slice every return of serve and spin every ball without a purpose. The only reason I can see for slicing a return of serve is to slow the ball down to give yourself time to advance the the NVZ.
I don't use that technique as it is just not that difficult for me to advance 15 feet. The problem with that technique is the slice hangs in the air and is very attackable, especially with your opponent's hard hit, topspin drive. Your underspin compliments your opponent's topspin right back at you. The more topspin your opponent can generate, the more the ball is dropping as it clears the net (aka "Heavy ball") making your return more difficult.

@@CWK090 I use a back spin about 25% of my 3rd drops. I typically can drop the ball in the first half of the nvz with the backspin. The important part of this is make sure to advance to the nvz. Rarely can an opponent take the ball out of the air from that distance. It’s another option to have.

The game is great cardio exercise, but the rules are meant to confuse and humiliate older people.
Plus, at the Y, they mix beginners with extremely experienced players to further humiliate beginners.
How would you like to have a few boxing lessons and then be put into the ring with Mike Tyson?
Is that smart? Is it rational? Is it motivational? No.
