:Fair use is a legal doctrine that promotes freedom of expression by permitting the unlicensed use of copyright-protected works in certain circumstances. Section 107 of the Copyright Act provides the statutory framework for determining whether something is a fair use and identifies certain types of uses-such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research-as examples of activities that may qualify as fair use. Tony Tribe turned "Red Red Wine" into a reggae song in 1969. UB40 is covering that version. They titled the album that featured it Labour of Love because it was filled with covers of the songs they loved. It's a good record that was very popular when I was in high school, but I went searching for the originals since then and prefer them now. It's hard to top Jimmy Cliff singing "Many Rivers to Cross" or The Slickers "Johnny Too Bad".

This was a hit when I was in high school but it wasn’t until many years later that I became aware of the original version.” UB40” was apparently the name of a welfare application form in Britain back then.

Tony Tribe's version lacks the toast found in UB40's version. The toast is built in parts off "The Clapping Song" by Shirley Ellis. She enjoyed success in the sixties with the novelty song "The Name Game". Links below the fold.
