“I’m just a lonely pilgrim, I walk this world in wealth” just one line but so descriptive. Brilliant lyrics
For me this is Bruce's greatest song. Simply a masterpiece of storytelling.
Thats true
Agree.
ONE of LOL but yes deffo a masterpiece
100%
definitely makes the top 10
“Tunnel of Love” is a criminally underrated album.
That tour was pretty good too
Agree 100%!
You have no idea what that word underrated means
I agree. I wish he would do this album in full on a tour...fortis die hard fans. It s a gorgeous album
Break up album that shone a light on a fucked up America.

One of the greatest lines ever: “god have mercy on the man, who doubts what he’s sure of” I live it a lot.
I thought that last part was "who does what he so does"?
My thought exactly. I doubted what I was sure of more than once and I hope everyday that God has mercy on my soul
Chills….

@@dantonliam I just stay away from trouble aka men now. Problem solved!
Bruce just knows…he knows.
This is the most honest love song I have ever heard. It speaks to the raw emotions of both love and the heartbreaking end of a marriage. We all were masks to protect ourselves and others, especially loved ones. This song describes that perfectly.
Well said....

No me canso de escucharlo, una y mil veces ❤❤❤
This man just grabs his guitar, sits down at the kitchen table and makes one of the best songs of all time, absolutely amazing!

The last great Springsteen song. Did Bruce get too wealthy to keep writing great music?

One of the most magnificently written songs of all time.
Truly his best, love this song !!

“We stood at the alter
the gypsy swore our future was right,
but in the wee wee hours, baby, baby,
the gypsy lied.”
Freakin’ BRILLIANT.
She did...
I think he is talking about Judy tenuda😂🎉
Many times, Springsteen is just telling a story, this is autobiographical, he lived this one.
That Lake Oswego Beauty Queen kicked his a**.
He cheated
The song beautifully summarizes what divorce feels like.
Still married to the same woman for 40 years but you can feel the pain one must feel from the words of this song.
Not only divorce, any painful breakup for that matter...
Exactly 😑❤️
Wow really a good song ..to bad for ya

Bruce Springsteen was going through a lot of pain when he was making this album. Losing his first wife
I like the song. I can’t help it though that I keep hearing Elvis’s Suspicious Minds when I listen to this song.
There are two types of people in the world.... Bruce Springsteen fans and the people who haven't heard him yet
Nobody can write a song quite like Bruce Springsteen, he's a great genius.
he is the boss
"God have mercy on a man who doubts what he's sure of" Amen
It is Amazing how a song can have a so powerful narrative about life in such a way that resumes a very emotional tragic path!
God have mercy on the man who doubts what he's sure of......what a line...
God have mercy on the man who doubts what he’s sure of...what an incredible poet, cuts to the heart that’s why he is the Boss

Yes! That line kills me. So freaking true.
Don't you love it
I do agree!
I don't think this was just a performance for him. He wrote this because of life experience, and he wanted to share it with his fans. Well done.
This song does not get old. Had the pleasure of seeing him live back in the day. One of the very greats, no doubt!
His emotions are on full display here. What a man he is 💕
Tonight, our bed is cold and I'm lost in the darkness of our love. God have mercy on the man who doubts what he's sure of. After all these years, I can never heard these lines without getting emotional.

Hey Dawn , all songs are very personal , all good songs anyway . You have to have felt the pain , love , joy or whatever to be able to express your feelings into music . No offense intended , just making an observation and commenting . It’s a lot deeper now , right ? Me too !

That’s why he’s the boss. Such a great song. “Maybe the gypsy lied”
This video is incredible! Guy strumming a guitar and singing about love in his kitchen. By the end, the viewer doesn’t even realize he’s right inside the singer’s heart and mind! Brilliant.
Brilliant Disguise is undoubtably one of the best songs Bruce has ever written. It's also very dark. The pain echoes along each line. The hard-hitting line of 'the gypsy lied' really smacks home. Couple this with One Step Up and it brings home how much of a wreck Bruce's marriage was.
Can't agree more. There are so many lines, in a single master peice of a song, which hits any man on earth.
Yeah ,,Gypsy" what a beautiful word! Inded!😂😂😂
It reads like a Greek tragedy.
I think they were both been unfaithful at the time. Truly a masterpiece of a song
@@phillipniemandt6802 absolutely. Bruce truly has a way with words. Many fans have lines from his songs tattooed on their bodies as a testament to their power.

Man, I got the privilege of living through the Beatles, the Stones, Bob Dylan and Springsteen. What a blessed life.
He was singing from the heart. Great lyrics.
I was saying how he sings with passion. Yep, from the heart. He’s a legendary artist. Along with Roy Orbison, Prince, Tina so many. That we live at time to hear these great songs is awesome.
Heartfelt and genuine, he's never been anything else for me as an artist.
One of the most magnificently written songs of all time.
Gold
I'd be honored if some Springsteen fans would take a quick listen to my acoustic piano & vocal CZcams performance DANCING IN THE DARK in tribute to the continuing relevance of this legendary American classic. Live acoustic with no autotune. Peace and stay safe in the '020s.
Some man.
absolutely brilliant
Funny how Bruce cheated on her with Patty and then made up a bunch of stuff to try to justify it in his head. He admitted this. He admitted she really loved him. She just didn't want anyone to know. Sounds like she was the bigger person all along.
The way he turns the "brilliant disguise" on himself toward the end is simple but devastating. It goes from an accusation against his lover to a question about his own shortcomings.
that's what makes it brilliant. i love when a song puts in a twist like this. like maybe both parties were complicit. another song that does this well is "last to know" by del amitri.
Matt Williams ... to a devastation.....
more than likely he wrote it about a girlfriend and their relationship.
@@amazinggrace926 It's about the end of his first marriage, to a woman he had no business being with. Besides a failed marriage, I also think a big theme of the album this song is from (Tunnel of Love) is Bruce coming to terms with his own unhappiness with his mainstream success. You can see a little bit of that in this song/video, in my opinion.
This song is just a heart breaker.
A brilliant song from a brilliant artist there's no disguising that
I don't know who you are or what you are saying but I think you need professional help right now this a terrible meseage
this is so a beautifully written song
so under rated.
hardly ever hear it on radio anymore
I remember the tunnel of Love, do you? That's how I know it's the real us
This is An 'amber baby eye
I think it is his most underrated song
"Lord have mercy on the man, who doubts what he's sure of". A very painful lesson that I learned in life.
Right. Either believe in ourselves or get off the bus and walk until it returns.
Probably one of the best lyrics put to paper
Bruce Springsteen all them people doctors and all them people Cuba
Bruce Springsteen this is where it begins it was Cuba from the very first beginning
ME TOO.. A REAL HARDCORE LESSON 💔
I hold you in my arms
As the band plays
What are those words whispered baby
Just as you turn away
I saw you last night
Out on the edge of town
I wanna read your mind
To know just what I've got in this new thing I've found
So tell me what I see
When I look in your eyes
Is that you baby
Or just a brilliant disguise
I heard somebody call your name
From underneath our willow
I saw something tucked in shame
Underneath your pillow
Well I've tried so hard baby
But I just can't see
What a woman like you
Is doing with me
So tell me who I see
When I look in your eyes
Is that you baby
Or just a brilliant disguise
Now look at me baby
Struggling to do everything right
And then it all falls apart
When out go the lights
I'm just a lonely pilgrim
I walk this world in wealth
I want to know if it's you I don't trust
'Cause I damn sure don't trust myself
Now you play the loving woman
I'll play the faithful man
But just don't look too close
Into the palm of my hand
We stood at the alter
The gypsy swore our future was right
But come the wee wee hours
Well maybe baby the gypsy lied
So when you look at me
You better look hard and look twice
Is that me baby
Or just a brilliant disguise
Tonight our bed is cold
I'm lost in the darkness of our love
God have mercy on the man
Who doubts what he's sure of
Beautiful lyrics 🎶♥️
Thank you.
Thanks for writing the lyrics.

the brilliance of how this is shot.
The best "Marriage In Trouble" song on the planet.
One of Bruce's biggest hits and I think his most underrated song reached number 5 on Billboard pop singles chart in 1987
I played his part in my past but you have to be in a perfect place in mind to see the (whole) picture he is painting. Everything from where he is singing it to the way the camera gets closer to him as he gets deeper into his soul, the expression on his face to all the words he chose for the song. One of the best songs ever written and performed. Thanks Bruce.
I think he's just singing about getting burned because the women he fell for wasn't who he thought she was.
Brilliant 👏
@@livetotell100 No, it's more complicated than that. He is also wondering who he is, and whether he's disguising himself to his wife. And to himself: "God have mercy on the man / Who doubts what he's sure of." The song is a masterpiece in conveying the deep sadness and regret of a marriage falling apart.
Starting at born to run and hungry heart ❤❤❤❤❤❤
@@s_____nic5086 Writing as someone who has been through some hell and dished a lot out. This song is very deep and does a great job of taking you back into the crazy headspace. Becoming lost in the lies is unavoidable when playing these games. 'God have mercy on the man - who doubts what he's sure of', perfectly describes the state of mind.
Way back in 1974, I was able to see this beautiful man sing, and I was hooked!
I was there working as security (Law Enforcement National Park Ranger) at the filming of this video. It was filmed at an Old Officers Club at the deactivated Fort Hancock at Sandy Hook NJ.I got to sit in for a sound check with the guitar for a sound and video check. I was about the same height and hair color. He came and took the guitar and was really down to earth good guy. I have a couple of great pictures at the shooting of the video.
awesome story! how cool was Bruce?
He was very cool, talked to people, took pictures, just a normal guy. I live in in the general area on the Jersey Shore area where he has a couple of houses. Over the years, I have seen him in bars, restaurants, etc. and just walking around town without any entourage. Most people give him his space and don't bother him.
+Martin Dugan And then there he was the next night...he was still just a normal guy :)
That's pretty incredible, that for sure couldn't happen these days with celebrities. Thanks for sharing!
What a gift you received!
For me this is Bruce's greatest song.
There are so many others that it is difficult to choose the best one, all of them are beautiful to listen to.
Absolutely it is. Great song. He sings with such passion is why it’s great.
Best one for me too definitely, I just love absolutely everything about this song ❤
I was going to say that Bruce looks handsome here, but now I'm also noticing that this Orlando Brito guy is super handsome!
Definitely an overlooked gem.
Look at his eyes❤️
God have mercy on the man who doubts what he's sure of.
Today I feel exactly like Bruce once sang this, a final breakup, the phase of one life spent with the wrong person is ending, and I thank God that I have the ability to recharge my depleted energy with Bruce in songs. He doesn't even know what magical and powerful fluid he has in him, he didn't just get the gift of musical talent, movement on stage, he's mysterious, he's a magnet, I have a high respect for him with an open heart....thank you for keeping me afloat and not drowning. ..
Absolutely agree. He saved me

I worked on this video as a second AD. We shot on Valentines Day in South Jersey. Bruce rolled up in his corvette, his jeans that he would wear rolled up under his arm. He was just so cool. What people don't know about this one shot music video was the prep and timing it took. The skill of this video is brilliant and no one realizes but it was shot by the world famous cinematographer Carlo Di Palma.
I looked at this video this morning for the first time in years and the incredible cinematography just blew me away. Black and white as the colour has gone from life, Bruce not changing chords but playing guitar (brilliant disguise!) and the one take panning in onto his face . Brilliant.
Wooow. Thnx for this..
Thanks for sharing this anecdote hopefully you can share more of that shooting time
Loved the way he had it shot in jersey
@james reece man the lyrics of song are as true as it can get
This video shows that someone with true talent doesn't need giant special effects, over the top glitz, and massive instrumentation to captivate an audience.
I listen to these lyrics and it’s like a conversation with me and Bruce. Musically Speaking
Album is so underrated, a new classic
My favorite by The Boss.
It was this album, my junior year in high school, that turned me into a fan. Absolutely changed my life.
I grew up in the 60’s. So in the 80’s was spoilt with original artists where songs had real meaning. Bruce Springsteen is amazing and the older I am the more I can appreciate him as a great singer/songwriter.
Him, Seger, Mellancamp and Knopfler all speak to me louder the older I get... they all write and sing about real life... none of this baby-baby-baby crap of the younger generation........true lyrics that speak to the soul.
And now we've got what? Drake?

This song has been playing in the back of my mind for a very long time. Most of the time I don’t hear it, but when I do it really sticks out. But I’ve never really paid attention. Now that I have, I realize that it is a masterpiece on so many levels. Bruce, you are a poet!

The songs from this album dealt with genuine heartbreak that Springsteen was going through. As I result I find the songs here particularly deep and meaningful. This one is my favorite.
I thought he had just got married to Julieanne?
Yes, this one is amazing, as are the title track and "One Step Up." All of them seemingly dealing with relationships that are unravelling.

Hammer Typ, Hammer Stimme, Danke das ich Zeitgleich mit diesem Mannn auf dieser Erde leben durfte😊
The studio recording of the music was used in this video, but Bruce Springsteen is singing the vocal live in a hidden mic. This masterpiece gives me chills up and down my spine every single time I hear it.
He did the same thing on Streets of Philadelphia to great effect, singing into a hidden mic as he's walking through the streets of the city.
By using this technique it adds a lot to music video, giving it more emotional intensity and makes the personal themes of the song much clearer, something which conventional lip syncing would not be able to achieve.
A genius
This song touches every inch of my soul 🖤
