R Tech mig welding unboxing!
Hi guys ive upgraded my welder from my previously very poorly sealey 150 mig. Early doors but so far so good really enjoying using this machine. good support fast deliverys and a great basis for both learning and growing skill with. purchased with my own money no sponsors. any questions leave a comment thanks.

Just bought this same welder, set it up on Friday, never done MIG before, all MMA. I'm very happy so far. My 2 Nephews helped get me started. One of them is a professional welder & he was impressed. Thank for sharing.

Funnily enough, I just ordered the rtech 180 today on the strength of reviews on a VW T4 forum I'm on, and then backed up after watching the same Geordy fella called John, you probably saw! Lol!
I've got mine to replace my Dads 25 year old or so, SIP migmate 130, which, at best, is shocking - well, wire feed certainly is - after not welding for 20 years or so myself.
Looking forward to taking delivery.

Nice review. Same hobby weld bottle and pref for TIG gloves. :) Got the same machine, from Santa (wife) after 20 years of using a rather basic 150 rated machine. I've also bought the stick torch. Really looking forward to using it over the holidays. Cheers.

I made up a trailing lead, using a 13A plug to 16A Socket & a 16A plug on welder lead, then a simple job to switch between 13A & 16A supply depending on job.
I have since done that! Great tip 👍
@@AnchorDesigns James, got a lot of railings to fabricate for garden here, but I would like to see you do a update on your R-Tech 180 before I decide on that or a OXFORD MIGMAKER 180-1, I,m old school, so use to the older tech,this R Tec inverter is something new to me.
@@stuartandrews4344 used it this morning like most weekends. Still chuffed with it. I wanted to go Oxford (as I mentioned in the video) however the person I dealt with really put me off. I then went to two agencies (as you can’t buy direct) and I was dealing with typical sales type approach “we have some ex demo” special prices all this rubbish. Although Rtech isn’t Uk produced and this is a big thing for me Oxford was my first call. But Rtech felt right at the time and still does today. No regrets and this isn’t sponsored!
Same here. I will probably never use more than 13A at home - but I have the option of 16A if I take the welder somewhere else and higher amperage available and needed.
It's a pity that it is a national secret how much these welders cost, one of the very important things we all want to know. Apart from that, great vid, unless you live in Liverpool. LOL
thank you james, i gleamed so much imformation from your video, from gas bottle supplier to which discs to use in the grinder, will call R-tech tomorrow and meantion your video, might help you at some point, gotta say, your workshop has some really old well made stuff in it, was looking in the background throughout the video thinking how well thought out and useable youve made it..

I have one of these which I bought used off a bloke who just wanted to build a trailer. It's a very nice machine with plenty of power form the sort of jobs I do. I had a small Sealey or SIP before and there is no comparison. Just a look at the wire feed tells the difference. one is made of plastic and slipped a lot and the R Tech is metal and does it's job easily.
Dream on. Wait till the R-tech breaks - it'll be the board - your mid-range Sealey or Sip will be running long after this ^ has died. I have all 3 btw & weld for a living - 2 Sips, 1 Sealey & a dead R-Tech. I'd take a Sip or Sealey any day of the week in preference. The R-tech had NOTHING done in terms of hours when the board went bad. Cost of repair made no sense, so it's stayed busted. I'm not a fan.

Worth saving for Shane! I did the same thing years back with a blue Clarke mig welder! I used to have one hand on the torch and the other feeding the wire spool! Best of luck for the new future welder 🍻 thanks for the comment
@@AnchorDesigns I'm struggling to learn with a Clarke. Already replaced the cheap plastic wire feed and it still doesn't feel right. Really hard to learn with possibly rubbish equipment.
Tempted to shell out £500 for this but it's painful after already paying £300 for a rubbish Clarke...

@@shanedowley2877 I bit the bullet and got a Lincoln Bester rather than an R-tech (but I think I'd probably be happy with both tbh), and MY GOD it's so *so* much easier learning how to weld with good equipment.
It just works. I point the thing at some metal and it sticks it together. Yeah, I burn through sometimes but I know what I did wrong because I'm in control.
The old Clarke made such messy porous welds, the wire feed was always inconsistent.
Really glad I upgraded. Sold the crappy Clarke for £180, so didn't even loose that much money on it.

Hi James a good straight forward no nonsense setting up a hob mig welder, i have a Clarke mig 150 and its OK but looking at ur new machine it looks far more superior with better features. Would u be interested in a Manchester rapidor power hacksaw In good working order on its own trolley 240volts a box of new starrett blades, it's just too big for my shop and I'm looking for a Kennedy saw like yours cheers dan
Thanks Dan really appreciated! With the power hacksaw I was after one for ages! But I’ve got x2 saws now plus the evolution shop saw, thanks for the offer but I Best not even ask the mrs! 😅 the Kennedy ones do come up, often at autojumbles I’ve found usually < £100. Happy hunting! 😃

Hi James, great video, where did you get the mini table from? I just weld on my workbench and I keep setting it alight. That little table would be great.
Hi, The mini Table is a 'scrap part' from work. its from a heat exchange from a nuclear submarine!....However for the size id recommend an old cast iron surface table a lot of workshops scrap them and find a lot going on eBay and gum tree for not a great amount of money. Or ask if you can rummage through the local sheet metal workshop scrap bins. Often Laser cutting shops have some nice scrapped parts/off cuts. J.

Shame this machine needs gas or the process of Welding needs gas? You can opt for a gas less mig welding machine. It all depends on what you want and how much you wish to invest into the skill and the machine, I mentioned in the video a company called Hobby weld. It’s a not rent deposit rental of co2/argon mix bottle. Best of luck and thanks for the comment.

Yes! Still going strong with no issues 👍 only thing that does annoy me is the length of the torch. But I think they do an extended version. Maybe 3m?

What I don’t understand is why people buy these inverter cheapo welders when they don’t need the portability. You are far better off buying an Oxford migmaker etc for similar money that will be smooth as silk and still be smooth as silk in 20yrs more than likely. Never mind in 3 yrs. If portability is essential yes but I think people get inverters often because they “look” better.
