make sure that you pay with the same card for the rental and that temporary charge they put on your card. I used two different cards (a credit card for the rental and another card for the holding charge) and my claim was denied. you have to use the same credit card for all charges associated with renting the car.

It doesn't matter, they will find a way not to pay. I had a straightforward claim. I was not at fault (some one hit my car while it was in a parking lot).I used the card for the rental, I had everything they asked for. But they (visa) Never paid. Every time I followed up, they will ask for same document over and over. I even attached previous emails where I provided the same thing. No use. Always " waiting for document" status. Until you finally give up.
As for the question of the brand, it's not the issuing bank. It's the chain you have to deal with (Such as Master or visa). I have had positive experience with Amex. But they usually have a fee or have less cash back. So one way or another, you are paying for it 😂😂😂

Also know that it is different outside of the US. My card covers rentals as long as they are the only insurance but in some countries they add additional insurance (kind of like no-fault) to the agreement by law and the credit card companies will not honor it. Make sure you call your card benefits line and speak with someone that knows. Have them identify the disqualifying conditions prior to traveling abroad.

Worked for a large car rental company- this is actually terrible advice. First you can negotiate the insurance rate as well as the car rental rate with the office when you pick up the car. If you buy the insurance you are not liable for anything. Not a dollar. If the car door gets bumped by another car door or shopping cart (for example) in a parking lot you will need to immediately pay the rental company your full deductible amount (remember that cc they asked for when you picked up the rental) and then go through either your insurance or (cc rental coverage which is an expensive disaster of an option- but that’s a whole other post) and it could possibly cause an insurance hike for future premiums and/or responsibility for tows etc. If you take the rental insurance offered, if they notice damage or you’re in an accident (fault or not) you literally walk away, no stress and no money. I like most of her advice but this will hurt you more than help you.

I worked for Enterprise for a few years after college…just buy the coverage and save yourself a headache and a lot of money. Once you sign the contract you’re claiming liability for ANY damages to the vehicle even if the damage was not your fault. Also, the credit card “insurance” (depending on the card) will only cover up to certain vehicle sizes. And if you don’t have the coverage via the credit card company and the vehicle gets damaged, you’d be responsible for paying your personal insurance’s deductible to the rental company since most act as their own body shop and repair their vehicles in-house. When you buy the coverage and the vehicle gets damaged the branch manager actually loses money due to having to amortize the costs of repairs out of the branch’s monthly profit.
    Just buy the coverage.

Check the fine print on the credit card coverage, there may be a limit. Plus it is a pain in butt to get them to reimburse the rental car company on even small claims. Worked at Avis many years ago, always get the insurance so that even you get a dent in the door, and the car is driveable, they won't rent it and they will charge you loss of revenue for the car. It's better to turn in the keys, they document the dent or damage, and you have the insurance, you just sign and leave. And loss of revenue is calculated at the rack rate per day. Including wait time on the lot to schedule the repair, moving the car to the collision shop, waits there and then gets picked up and returned to the rental lot. Can take upwards of 14 days plus.

I filed a claim with the credit card. No BS and no deductible either. They paid the company. As long as you have photos, your paid rental receipt with the specific card, and the estimated cost the rental company provides, basically all your documents you would’ve needed when filing a claim with your insurance. The Lost damage waiver keeps you off the hook for damages up to the value of the whole vehicle and is separate from your regular insurance rates. Yeah I got screwed last year. My car got broken into and damaged badly where I had to wait weeks for parts then when those parts came, they needed more parts.
The car rental company cornered me into thinking I had to pay a protection plan of $30 a day just in case any accidents/damages happened with the car rental not knowing that my insurance was covering it 100% for 30 days.
I lost $900 that entire month 🥲 and lost another couple of hundred having to pay the full price for a few days then was like "I can't keep paying for this shit! Why is those parts taking forever?!?!"

Yes it’s true, but your credit card insurance coverage will most likely not include loss of use for the rental company. So if it takes 30 days to repair the car then you might be responsible for 30 days loss of use to the rental company. So the lesson is to make sure that your credit card insurance covers loss of use also.

I once had to claim 100 from visa (yes, these are 'benefits ' from the card chain such as visa and master and not the issuing bank). They asked me to provide same proof over and over formonths(the card was rented using their card, I otherwise had insurance etc). While they never paid it, the rental company black listed unless I paid for the damage, they will no longer rent me a car. So don't fall for a bs unless you have an attorney like Saul Goodman on speed dial. It's not what it sounds like. 😂

Whoah! It’s much more complicated. Rental car companies will charge you the full daily rate every day the car is under repair because they can’t rent it to another person. That’s usually NOT covered by your credit card unless you have a specific high-end benefit like some Visa Infinite cards. So, be very careful. Otherwise, you can still be on the hook to pay $1,000+/week for “Loss of Use” while under repair, which could be multiple weeks of time.

The storage rental place where I have a storage unit just got bought by another company last year and they just sent us a notice informing all renters that they had calculated the insurance incorrectly and demanded I pay them retroactively an extra $125 per month going back to October 15 2022. The total rental before they bought the place was $75 a month. When they took over it went up to $150 a month. When I asked about it they said they were supposed to charge $130 per month on top of that for insurance but instead only charged $5. They are also charging a late fee for not paying the insurance and since every renter is now in arrears they have locked everyone out of their unit with a lock out lock and rescinded access to the facility so my password no longer works. Then they imposed a late fee of $5 for the first day and $1 for each additional day each month's insurance fee was not paid so that's over $5000 they say I owe. So I asked what the insurance covered because I don't have $5000 worth of stuff in my locker and they said it is state mandated storage insurance to pay for any damage to the building or property in case of natural disaster or arson or anything else but it didn't' cover my belongings and that they don't offer insurance for that. Then I remembvered when Walmart made all their employees pay for life insurance with Walmart as the beneficiary and the courts found against Walmart saying they couldn't do that So I contacted an attorney and he got a court order to take all the locks off and to grant everyone access. It was also a lie that it was state mandated. In fact, according to my attorney, the insurance company the storage facility lists for the police is not licensed to sell insurance in my state and can't find it in the national registry of insurance companies.
Then my lawyer told me that half of the insurance charges that rental company's claim to be selling you isn't real. The way some work is they charge you the fee. Then they pool all those fees and when a customer gets in an accident, that money goes to pay for damage to the vehicle. The customer gets nothing out of it so if you are injured you have to rely on your health insurance coverage. If you hit another driver the rental company's insurance pays that but that insurance company then turns around and sues you to recoup the cost. and if you don't have your own separate policy you will have to pay out of pocket. Make sure you read the fine print and know the law where you are renting.

I am from PR and have been living here all my life, and to answer your question, I can confirm that many things here are different (…in a bad way). Things shouldn’t be different here, but they are.
Those car rental companies here make up their own policies and their own rules, and customer service is terrible everywhere in PR.
Big Companies like Costco, Walmart, AT&T, just to name a few, have different policies for everything and even their websites are different.
I lived for a year in Washington state (in 2022) and everyone (well, …almost everyone) was nice and friendly.
I have visited many different states in the US and have rented cars dozens of times from almost every rental company, and have always declined every insurance they offer me without any problem. Some of the employees are very insistent while others just accept the fact that you have the right to decline their insurance and don’t give you a hard time.
In PR everyone (…again, almost everyone) is rude and nasty.
Maybe you didn’t notice this because you were here on vacation or just visiting, and people here tend to be nicer and more polite with tourists than they are with the locals.
Anyway, that’s just my opinion based on my experience living here for 59 years now.

It's not different, Erika is wrong. I work for a car rental agency. Credit card companies DO
offer coverage, but it's a reimbursement coverage. Meaning either you pay for all damages upfront and then get reimbursed by the credit card company, or the rental agency goes through your insurance to pay for the damages and your credit card reimburses your insurance. So, you'll still have a claim filed against your insurance.
Here's my advice as someone who works for a rental agency but doesn't get paid more to offer protections. If you're renting for 2 weeks or less, take the damage waiver. The cost of the protection will be less than the vast majority of peoples' insurance deductibles. If you're renting for 2+ weeks, ask how much the protection is per day, and then do the math to see whether your insurance deductible will be cheaper or if the protection is cheaper.
Keep in mind that damage waiver is truly, "it doesn't matter what happens. as long as you're not breaking the law when the car was damaged, you walk away. no bs"
I had a lady take the damage waiver, total a brand new (had 56 miles on it when she got it) Wagoneer the same day she rented it. She took our damage waiver. She came back in, and we switched out her cars and she went on her trip. Total cost to her was that $30 she spent on damage waiver.
