  • Bo Hare spends hours lovingly restoring an old David Boddington RC aircraft he bought at auction for £30, to see whether or not it is worth selling to Drew for a profit.

    It’s probably hard for their pilot to fly it when he’s got someone behind him yelling “FLY FLY FLY FLY FLY FLY FLY FLY!”

    I knew David Boddington and I built and flew several of his plane designs. He designed a trainer called the 'Mentor', I crashed it several times while learning and it didn't get damaged. David also built many planes for the film industry.
    For sure with the engine, radio and the history, the plane would be valuable. I and many other have spent a fortune on model planes and helicopters over the years. Many outfits today are in the several thousand dollar bracket.
    I do like these restoration videos.

    Actually built by boddington himself.
    Gold!!! Worth more than £1000 to the right enthusiast

    Great stuff - I'm in the camp that says keep it. The Tabloid apparently was quite a forgiving aircraft to fly for its time, and the model mirrors that. I believe it was outclassed soon after the start of WW1, although it had one or two military successes to its name.

    I built and flew a Boddington's Albatros C1. The original model was built by Dave for the BBC WW1 series Wings.

    As an RC plane flier, I'd be rather apprehensive flying that thing !

    I had an SE5 about the same size. I ran a .40 size 4 stroke engine with straight exhaust. It flew like a dream and sounded like a real plane. I sold it like an idiot.

    The full size was named Tabloid because it was a small aeroplane, like the tabloid papers were small papers.

    I own a DB Matador owned by David himself and fitted with a small diesel, tissue covered. I really don't have the nerve to fly it free flight and yet, I won't convert it to rc, so she just stays on the ground!

    £2.5k? Have you met the average UK model flyer? Of course Boddo is a famous figure, but come on - in general kits are worth more unstarted than partially of fully completed, and the type of person who would be most interested to own this is on a fixed income (pension), so is unlikely to want to splurge. I'd say £500 is more realistic, but even that might be optimistic.

    David Boddington. Did he also build some full scale aircraft of WW1 vintage for the movie industry. I keep thinking Vickers Gunbus.

      bfmcarparts: I think he built large models, large enough that they looked real in movies.

      Exactly, £2500 is totally ridiculous, or my collection of RC models is worth £500,000

    I would have brazed that tank not soldered it, brazing is much stronger.

    This is how hobby R/C should be. We had to make our own parts! Now....GET OFF MY LAWN! No, seriously, this is how we made our R/C planes in the 80s.

    • @procatprocat9647
      @procatprocat9647 Před rokem

      Nothing stopping you making your own parts these days. If anything it's more accessible. You can even design your own planes rather than just copying other people's designs. There's a tonne of inspiration out there including books on flight principles and NASA type approved wing profiles.

      @oliverbowen17 Před 4 měsíci

      £300 is more then fair of that model but the fact David Boddington one of the best model plane designers in history built it himself would probably take the value up to £1500 at least
