  • Snowmobile carburetors can be tricky? Idle screws and needle jets. Pilot jet plugged? Needle and seat? Carbs can be tricky because the slightest little thing can throw the whole sled out of whack. Ricki takes us through some of the possible symptoms and how to fix them. Most carburetors just need a good cleaning to get that old sled running like a top but knowing what to clean is half the battle. Whether it's at idling or wide open, Ricko explains. This was so helpful, its been a bit since I've done some work on a snowmobile, let alone owned and rode one. Got myself a 1997 Ultra, didn't hold idle but I got it running and fairly close to being back together. Idles at about 3500 and slowly dies down to a little under 3000, so I think I just gotta turn the air fuel screw out a half turn. Seems to be running lean.

Working on my first sled. 1985 Polaris Indy Trail 440.
I know nothing about motors, so I watched a vid. When I took my carbs apart yesterday, they were caked in hard white stuff. I couldn't even get it all off. I pulled an impressive amount of grass and acorns out of the air box also 😄 still can't get it to start without pouring pre-mix into the spark plug holes.

Is a wire brush best to use? Can I let it soak in something?

@@DIGIT9 Bought a new fuel pump, the WD40 with the brass brush is best so far. I cleaned the nozzle in each carb, I didn't know it was even there last time - they were that dirty. Just need to clean pilot jet. I noticed that the C clip on both my brass pins were set on the top, so I moved them to the middle. That's all I've done so far today. I have a 1991 Polaris indy 500 l/c, and i’m having a hard Time tuning the carbs. I’ve rebuilt the entire fuel system from the strainer in the tank, fuel pump, both carbs have been toroughly cleaned, rebuilted with kits and sync’ ed, and it Stills starving for fuel from idle to to top end, but if i only adjust the enricher (choke) so it is slighly pulled, it runs like a Champ. I’ve checked both crank seals , They does’nt seem to be bad, but vaporizing brake cleaner around them is not an exact science. I’ve checked compression, 110 on both sides. It is like my 20th sled, bought it to pull the sleigh with the kids around the house and it is by far the sled that give me the most intense headaches 😂. I was thinkin’ about putting 300 mainjets in place of the stock 280’s. i Also have bigger pilots jets to play with.

I am perplexed by my Sled. Carbs are new and look perfect, float set correctly, float needle cleaned and checked. Doesn't leak when parked or pulled with kill switch on. Two things I did. I used a smaller fuel line from tank to fuel pump (used 1/4" vs 3/8" stock). Also up'd vaccum line size from case to fuel pump. Do you think that would be enough to increase pressure to the carb when running to force fuel past the float needle?

the pilot jet you held at the 30 second mark, is it supposed to be clear from end to end too.?
Seems a silly question but I'm doing a new to me mikumi carb on an old abused skidoo and theres no light coming through, wire will not pass end to end. I believe that pilot jet is also known as an emulsion tube, the fine holes atomise the air fuel mix.
Also, theres 2 adjustable jets on the outside, small one is idle mix ?, it was 1 1/2 turns out.
But theres a larger one and it was 3 1/2 turns out, that seems a lot.
This is my first sled, I got a real klunker but it was very cheap, guy said it used to run good but now will not stay running.
Bowl had grit and little bits of crap and varnish.
I run it through a hot ultrasound bath, sprayed with carb cleaner, ran wire through every orifice and blew it out with air.
Its ready to go back in, just curious about that adjustable jet, it has knurling so its obviously meant to be adjusted without tools.

Question I just rebuilt my carb ( Mikuni VM 34-229) for my Ski Doo Citation 4500 (377 Motor), everything has been replace except the floats and throttle slide. It has new fuel pump, new fuel lines, new intake gaskets, motor has 120 psi both cylinders. new Spark Plugs and wires, good spark. I have not changed the coils or done anything with the points. I had it running after for 10 minutes after lots of tinkering with both the idle and air screw. Then I took it for a 5 minute drive worked great shut it off and loaded it up in the truck unload it in m y garage and now it won't start again. I set everything back to factory settings as per the Citation Manual and I still I can not get to stay run. It will start runs for 10 seconds or less then dies, if you cover the air intake with your hand you can get to run a little longer but as soon as you remove your hand and open the up the throttle it dies. Not sure why it won't staying running, Is it starving for fuel or air? Not sure what I should adjust as everything I have read says put the air screw to the manual setting and leave it alone. Any help or ideas would be great.

Hey Ricki Happy New Year!! 🎆 I’m having trouble with my 99 Indy 500 carbs. They are both clean as a whistle everything stock
    Chokes are set correctly
    3/4 out on air screws
    Slide bottom out at 7/32
    Idle screws at 1/4
Both slides have wear spots from screw
I used drill bits to set.
    All New fuel lines
    New plugs
When Ice cold it starts on 3rd pull but I have to immediately start fiddling with the choke and the throttle to keep it from dying, for a few seconds, then it will idle off choke but high around 3000.
Once we’re off and running it’s sharp and fast but when I stop it’s idling still very high around 2500 to 2800.
Then if I shut it off hot for even 30 seconds to a minute it won’t start without choke and multiple pulls Plus wide-open throttle and throttle pumping to get it to start. Then once it’s idling hot When I hit the throttle it bogs completely out Unless I pump the throttle To keep it from bogging out then I can run Out of the hole and it’s fine again back to fast and high idle. Not looking for a race just a reliable family sled. Please let me know what you think. Thank you.

Hi there love your channel could you tell me what you think of this. Carbs are clean it’s getting fuel and air I think it’s a grounding issue or some sort of electrical problem. Let me know if you have ever seen this and what to take a look at. czcams.com/users/shortsxJVYH1xxopo?feature=share
I haven’t dug into it yet haven’t had the time but I do think it’s going to be a cdi or something. I’m used to the older vintage points sleds this is my first newer old liquid cooled machine. Thanks for your advice in advance. Ryan

Sounds like its running out of fuel ! Have you checked fuel filter in tank ? Fuel pump could have crap in it ? Pulse line from fuel pump to crank case could be leaking ? Few things to check ! A cdi wont do what it's doing ! Also check compression !
