Die Salt Lick Safari Lodge ist seit Jahrzehnten eines der Aushängeschilder Kenias und berühmt dafür, zu den meistfotografierten Lodges der Welt zu gehören. Die Salt Lick Safari Lodge ist eine luxuriöse Unterkunft im Herzen des Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary mit Blick auf ein Wasserloch und die umliegenden Ebenen des Taita Taveta Counties. Seit Dezember 2020 ist die Lodge unter der Regie der Sarova Gruppe
Man erreicht die Salt Lick Lodge von Voi über ein langgezogenes Tal. Der Transfer von de SGR-Station Voi dauert etwa 1 Stunde. Dann erreicht man ein privates Tierschutzgebiet, das Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary.
Für viele beginnt der Besuch erst einmal mit einem Mittagessen im Schwesterhotel Taita Hills Safari Resort, da die Salt Lick Lodge nur Frühstück und Abendessen serviert. Auch dieses Haus ist beeindruckend. Auswahl und Qualität des Buffets sind hervorragend. Das ist Sterne-Luxus mitten in der Wildnis.
Wenige Kilometer tiefer im Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, liegt dann die atemberaubende Salt Lick Lodge. Die auf Stelzen errichteten Hotelzimmer ermöglichen ein optimales Miteinander von Tourismus und Natur, verbunden mit einem unvergleichlichen Blick auf das Geschehen am Wasserloch vor dem Haus. Aufgrund der Lage 900m über dem Meer ist es hier etwa 9 Grad kühler als an der Küste. Oft weht eine frische Brise. Das zusammen macht es hier sehr angenehm.
Die Zimmer sind größer als erwartet und komfortabel ausgestattet. Ein Deckenventilator macht die Temperaturen erträglich. Nachts schützt ein Moskitonetz und das Bad bietet den gewohnten westlichen Komfort, inkl. sofortigen Warmwasser in mehr als hinreichender Menge. Das ganz Besondere an diesen Zimmern ist natürlich der einzigartige Ausblick.
An diesem Wasserloch ist wirklich immer etwas los. Ständig besuchen Tiergruppen das Wasserloch. Besonders Zebras, Gazellen und Elefanten sind Dauergäste, was verständlich wird, wenn man weiß, dass ein Elefant täglich rund 250 Liter Wasser braucht. Ob aus dem Restaurant oder aus dem Hotelzimmer: Man hat immer den besten Blick auf das Geschehen. Ob Marabus mit ihrer beeindruckenden Spannweite, Warzenschweine, Wasserböcke, Gazellen oder Antilopen: Hier wird es nie langweilig. Die noch jungen Wasserböcke üben derweil für die späteren Kämpfe um die Rangordnung. In der Trockenzeit, wie z. B. im März, sind die meisten anderen Wasserlöcher der Gegend ausgetrocknet. Die Tiere kommen daher aus einem weiten Umkreis, da sie wissen, dass es an diesem Wasserloch immer etwas zu trinken gibt. Das sorgt für ständige Aktivität am Wasserloch.
Da man sich immer eine Etage über den Tieren bewegt, ist man selbst sicher und die Tiere fühlen sich nicht gestört. Allenfalls kommt mal ein vorwitziger Pavian hinauf. Natürlich gilt für diese wie für alle Tiere hier: nicht füttern!
Eine Besonderheit ist der mehr als 50m lange Tunnel, der genau vor dem Wasserloch endet. Gesichert hinter Panzerglas ist man so fast auf Tuchfühlung mit den Tieren. Von hier gelingen Nahaufnahmen auch ohne Teleobjektiv - natürlich ohne Blitzlicht, um die Tiere nicht zu verschrecken. Dabei hat man einen sehr schönen Rundumblick durch die Fenster in alle Richtungen.
Mitunter kommt eine riesige Büffelherde zu Besuch. Es reiht sich Tier an Tier und das schier endlos. Gerade auch das Gerangel der jungen Bullen untereinander kann man dabei eindrucksvoll erleben.
Das Abendbuffet im Restaurant lässt keine Wünsche offen. Dabei kommen die Tiere oft bis direkt an das Haus, weil dort das frische Wasser entspringt. Viele Besucher lieben die beeindruckenden Sonnenuntergänge.
In der Nacht hat man vom Zimmer aus, die Möglichkeit zu beeindruckenden Nachtaufnahmen. Vor allem das Trompeten der Elefanten ist deutlich zu vernehmen. Mitunter hört man auch das Brüllen der Löwen.
Die Lodge ist nicht eingezäunt. Keinesfalls sollte man alleine Richtung Wasserloch oder in die nähere Umgebung gehen. Man sollte niemals vergessen, dass dies alles wilde Tiere sind. Auch wenn sie so friedlich wirken, sind die meisten sehr wehrhaft. Mit gegenseitigem Respekt und gebührendem Abstand kommen alle gut miteinander aus. Wer mit Kindern hierher reist, sollte außerhalb der Lodge, auch beim Ein- und Aussteigen, immer gut aufpassen.
Wem das Geschehen am Hotel noch zu sehr Zoocharakter vermittelt, kann morgens noch vor dem Frühstück bei einem GameDrive die Tiere im Sanctuary in Aktion erleben. Die frühen Morgenstunden bieten die beste Gelegenheit, auch die Löwen in Aktion zu sehen. Hier drei verspielte Jungtiere und zwei Löwinnen. Später am Tag, wenn es dann zu heiß ist, liegen die Löwen nur noch träge im Schatten. Deshalb sind die frühmorgendlichen Ausfahrten so attraktiv.
Auch tagsüber bietet das Schutzgebiet eine Vielzahl von Tiergruppen. Die Tierdichte ist hier weitaus größer als beispielsweise im riesigen Tsavo Nationalpark. Deshalb folgt hier eine Tierbegegnung sofort der nächsten. Natürlich muss man mitunter ein waches Auge haben, um die Tiere zu entdecken. Beeindruckend ist auch die Vogelwelt in diesem Schutzgebiet, die den Besucher stets auch akustisch im gesamten Park begleitet.
Bei alledem kann man die beeindruckende Landschaft genießen. Namensgebend sind die Taita Hills, die bei Fahrten im Schutzgebiet auch immer eine gute Orientierung bieten. Nicht weniger sehenswert sind die weiten Ebenen des Taita Taveta Counties. Von einem nahe gelegenen Aussichtspunkt hat man den perfekten Blick über das etwa 10 km x 11 km große Schutzgebiet. Man sieht die markanten Taita Hills und die Salt Lick Lodge mitten im Sanctuary. Gut gepflegte Pisten sind ebenfalls ein positives Merkmal dieses Schutzgebiets.
Alle 100m steht ein oft über 3m hoher Termitenhügel. Diese Insekten sind nachtaktiv, deshalb wirken ihre Bauten tagsüber wie ausgestorben.
Mal sieht man Antilopen, dann Giraffen. Stundenlang könnte man dem frechen Spiel der Paviane zusehen, es wird nie langweilig. Die Kenianer nennen sie Baboons, von französisch Babouin, also Dummkopf.
Gemütliche Gesellen sind hingegen die riesigen Elefanten, die in kleinen Gruppen durch den Park ziehen. Wer täglich 250 kg Pflanzen frisst, ist damit eigentlich ständig beschäftigt. Da bleiben den Dickhäutern nur etwa 2 Stunden Schlaf pro Nacht, oft im Stehen.
Mitunter weiß man gar nicht, wo man zuerst hinsehen soll. Es ist das Herausstellungsmerkmal des Taita Hills Wildlife Sancturay eine so enorme Tierdichte aufzuweisen. Ich habe hier mehr als 2,5 Stunden Videomaterial aufgezeichnet. Aber dieses Video möchte ja nur zeigen, was die Lodge bietet und was man in diesem Schutzgebiet erwarten darf. Ein eigener Besuch soll ja nicht ersetzt werden. Vielmehr möchte ich alle Zuschauer auf den Geschmack bringen, es mir gleich zu tun und ebenfalls herzukommen. Und bei allen, die bereits hier waren, wecke ich vielleicht schöne eigene Erinnerungen.
Das Chamäleon scheint uns erklären zu wollen, dass man es hier gemächlich angehen sollte und nicht von Hektik und eigenem Termindruck getrieben durcheilen sollte.
Für ein Budget von etwa 200€/Nacht für 2 Personen inkl. Vollpension plus Transfer und GameDrives bekommt der Reisende wirklich etwas geboten.
Die meisten Gäste kommen leider nur für eine einzige Nacht hierher. Wer sich hingegen für zwei Übernachtungen entscheiden sollte, wird das keine Sekunde bereuen. Wer wirklich Tiere sehen möchte, sollte diese einzigartige Lodge nicht nur als Durchgangsstation auf der Reise nach Tsavo West oder Amboseli nutzen. Hier wird man unvergessliche Momente erleben. Das empfiehlt diese Lodge und das Taita Hills Sanctuary für jeden Kenia-Reisenden. Ich bin absolut davon überzeugt, dass auch Sie dann sagen werden: Dieser Besuch lohnt sich wirklich! Es ist das Reiseziel, an dem der Zauber niemals endet.

Salt Lick Lodge is reached from Voi via a long valley. The transfer from Voi SGR station takes about 1 hour. Then you reach a private wildlife sanctuary, the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary.
For many, the visit first begins with lunch at the sister hotel, Taita Hills Safari Resort, as Salt Lick Lodge only serves breakfast and dinner. This establishment is also impressive. The selection and quality of the buffet are outstanding. This is star luxury in the middle of the wilderness.
A few kilometers deeper in the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, lies the breathtaking Salt Lick Lodge. The hotel rooms, built on stilts, allow for an optimal coexistence of tourism and nature, combined with an incomparable view of the action at the waterhole in front of the house. Due to the location 900m above sea level, it is about 9 degrees cooler here than on the coast. Often there is a fresh breeze. This together makes it very pleasant here.
The rooms are larger than expected and comfortably furnished. A ceiling fan makes the temperatures bearable. A mosquito net protects at night and the bathroom offers the usual western comfort, including instant hot water in more than sufficient quantity. The very special thing about these rooms is of course the unique view.
There is always something going on at this waterhole. Groups of animals are constantly visiting the waterhole. Especially zebras, gazelles and elephants are permanent guests, which becomes understandable when you know that an elephant needs about 250 liters of water daily. Whether from the restaurant or from the hotel room, you always have the best view of the action. Whether it's marabous with their impressive wingspan, warthogs, waterbucks, gazelles or antelopes: it never gets boring here. Meanwhile, the still young waterbucks are practicing for the later fights for the ranking order. In the dry season, such as March, most of the other waterholes in the area have dried up. The animals therefore come from a wide radius, knowing that there is always something to drink at this waterhole. This ensures constant activity at the waterhole.
Since you are always one floor above the animals, you yourself are safe and the animals do not feel disturbed. At most a cheeky baboon comes up. Of course, for these as for all animals here: do not feed!
A special feature is the more than 50m long tunnel, which ends exactly in front of the waterhole. Secured behind bulletproof glass you are almost in close contact with the animals. From here you can take close-up pictures even without a telephoto lens - of course without flash light, so as not to scare the animals. At the same time, you have a very nice all-round view through the windows in all directions.
Sometimes a huge herd of buffalo comes to visit. It lines up animal to animal and that almost endlessly. Especially the wrangling of the young bulls among themselves can be experienced impressively.
The evening buffet in the restaurant leaves nothing to be desired. The animals often come right up to the house, because that's where the fresh water comes from. Many visitors love the impressive sunsets.
At night you have the possibility to take impressive night pictures from your room. Especially the trumpeting of the elephants is clearly audible. Sometimes you can also hear the roar of the lions.
The lodge is not fenced. Under no circumstances should you go alone in the direction of the waterhole or in the immediate vicinity. You should never forget that these are all wild animals. Even if they seem so peaceful, most of them are very defensible. With mutual respect and proper distance, they all get along well. Those traveling here with children should always pay close attention outside the lodge, including when entering and exiting.
If the activities at the hotel are still too zoo-like for you, you can experience the animals in action in the sanctuary during a GameDrive in the morning before breakfast. The early morning hours offer the best opportunity to see the lions in action. Here three playful cubs and two lionesses. Later in the day, when it is too hot, the lions just lie lazily in the shade. That is why the early morning drives are so attractive.
The sanctuary also offers a variety of animal groups during the day. The animal density here is much higher than for example in the huge Tsavo National Park. Therefore, here one animal encounter immediately follows the next. Of course, you have to keep an eye open to spot the animals. Impressive is also the bird life in this protected area, which always accompanies the visitor also acoustically in the entire park.
With all this, one can enjoy the impressive landscape. The Taita Hills give the park its name and are always a good orientation point when driving through the protected area. No less worth seeing are the wide plains of Taita Taveta County. From a nearby vantage point you have a perfect view over the 10 km x 11 km large protected area. You can see the prominent Taita Hills and Salt Lick Lodge in the middle of the sanctuary. Well maintained trails are also a positive feature of this sanctuary.
Every 100m there is a termite mound, often over 3m high. These insects are nocturnal, so their burrows appear extinct during the day.
Sometimes you see antelopes, then giraffes. For hours you could watch the cheeky play of the baboons, it never gets boring. The Kenyans call them Baboons, from the French Babouin, meaning fool.
The giant elephants, on the other hand, who roam through the park in small groups, are more leisurely companions. Those who eat 250 kg of plants daily are actually constantly busy. That leaves the pachyderms only about 2 hours of sleep per night, often standing up.
Sometimes you don't know where to look first. It is the outstanding feature of the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary to have such an enormous animal density. I have recorded more than 2.5 hours of video footage here. But this video only wants to show what the lodge offers and what you can expect in this sanctuary. It is not meant to replace a visit of your own. Rather I would like to give all viewers the taste to do the same and to come here as well. And for all those who have already been here, I may awaken fond memories of their own.
The Chameleon seems to want to explain to us that one should take it leisurely here and not rush through driven by hectic and own deadline pressure.
For a budget of about 200€/night for 2 persons including full board plus transfers and GameDrives the traveler really gets something offered.
Unfortunately, most guests come here for only one night. However, if you decide to stay for two nights, you won't regret it for a second. If you really want to see animals, this unique lodge should not only be used as a transit station on the journey to Tsavo West or Amboseli. Here you will experience unforgettable moments. This recommends this lodge and Taita Hills Sanctuary for every Kenya traveler. I am absolutely convinced that you will then also say: This visit is really worth it! It is the destination where the magic never ends.
Ich war bis jetzt zweimal dort aber nicht das letzte mal
Waren dieses Jahr Anfang März auf Safari in Kenia.
Büffel, Gnus, Elefanten Giraffen, Löwen, Gazellen, Flusspferde, Krokodile, Zebras, Antilopen und vieles mehr. Ein toller Blick auf den Kilimandscharo war uns auch gegönnt.
Bei den Taita Hills waren wir nicht. Sieht aber auch sehr toll aus :)

Im Video gibt es eine falsche Info. Fakt ist: Die Salt Lick Safari Lodge war früher mal unter der Sarova Gruppe. Als ich im Dezember 2020 dort war, war sie schon nicht mehr unter Sarova.
Ja, der Einwand scheint korrekt zu sein.
Zwar sprechen viele Buchungsseiten (z B BOOKING.COM) immer noch von SAROVA Salt Lick Safari Lodge, aber auf der Sarova Website ist das Hotel nicht mehr genannt.
Im Eingangsbereich der Lodge hängt ein Schild:

Auf der Homepage der Lodge konnte ich keine neue Gruppenzugehörigkeit erkennen. Allerdings empfiehlt die Salt Lick Lodge das Baobab am Diani Beach. Das lässt einen Zusammenhang vermuten.
