  • In this video we clear an ear wax impaction problem one of our Nigerian Dwarf Goats had. It was a pretty simple process, this was our first time experiencing this situation, I hope this helps you if you come upon the same thing in one of your livestock animals.

    Hi, This is the first video of yours I've watched so I don't know if what I'm about to share you already was aware, so my dog had similar issues with her ears most of her life, I was constantly at my Vets and specialists to resolve, eventually I was told that her ear problem was directly caused by allergies to her food, she also had IBS so her diet was constantly watched, I suggest you check what he is eating, drinking etc and try to identify which is having the biggest reaction, it also was a fungal infection, yeast type smell etc. My dog could experience a lot of pain if her diet/ what she was given to eat or drink was altered.

    • @thissideofthefirmament
      @thissideofthefirmament  Před 2 lety +2

      Yeah looks like yeast but it was an ear mite parasite problem. Cleared up with his improving immune system, we think he became a target for the parasites when we castrated him as he was our only goat we had this ear mite problem with. After clearing out any buildup, just with water, we monitored it and as he healed the parasites no longer were interested in him. But yeah, probably was so itchy!

    I’m curious with the winter months coming up again, if this problem will come back again for your sweet goat. I just noticed my Lamancha has a large amount of earwax buildup so I may try some thing similar but she’s never been on a milking stand before so I’ll have to start their first. If I managed to get her still enough then I can probably try a similar therapy. Although I don’t think it’ll take nearly as long since she has tiny ears.

    • @thissideofthefirmament
      @thissideofthefirmament  Před 9 měsíci

      Hey! In this particular case we determined the problem was probably ear mites. He had been whethered in the weeks leading up to this ear problem we discovered. We think his immune system was burdened with him being rubber banded and it allowed for the ear mites to sneak in and get a foothold. Thankfully after this treatment in the video and one more clean out a few days later, the problem never came back.
      Funny you mention Lamanchas, I think we first learned the term "gunked" in a forum regarding lamanchas ears doing this sort of thing. I didn't have lamanchas at the time but within the last month I bought two lamanchas so now I need to look out for them getting gunked! Do lamanchas have gunked ears worse in the winter time?

      @thissideofthefirmament  Před 2 lety +11

      Thank you so much for commenting! I googled what the term "plaque" is in comparison to wax and then I watched the pig video. The googling told me that the "plaque" is caused by a parasite and while idk if that's the issue with the pig I started looking up goat ear mites and ye-up... If you Google "Psoroptic Ear mite in goats" and click Images there's a goat ear that looks almost exactly like the thumbnail picture of Busters ear. So that's awesome because now I think we can move in the direction of treating this like a parasite and we just successfully treated our dog with ear mites using a combination of castor oil, Neem oil, and plantain tincture. Woot woot! Worth a try!

      No, we had to clean his ears out again this last week. He's our only goat having this problem. He was born very small and has a few "runt" type health issues, I am wondering if this is an immune or pH imbalance because of his runtness. I'd be happy to hear from anyone who knows something to try.

    • @heidiallen4563
      @heidiallen4563 Před 2 lety +1

      That’s definitely an infection, not wax. Does it smell? If it smells like sourdough bread starter, it’s likely a yeast infection. Vinegar will help. I have also seen people use athlete’s foot cream externally on the pinnae. I would be scared to use it down deep in the canal in case his ear drum is not intact. No peroxide, not even diluted, for this same reason. If it doesn’t have that smell, it is bacterial and that’s going to need vet intervention.

    • @heidiallen4563
      @heidiallen4563 Před 2 lety +3

      Also, if it’s yeast, water is the worst thing you can use. Yeast grows where it’s warm and moist.

    • @thissideofthefirmament
      @thissideofthefirmament  Před 2 lety +2

      I appreciate all of your information. It didn't have any other smell than the smell I might smell from the back of an earring. Just dead skin cheesy smell. It didn't not smell like a yeast infection. Also, the water was for the purpose of clearing the impaction. This same technique is used on children who's earwax has become lodged. It was the safest option at the time to first clear the blockage and then reassess. But again, I appreciate your information and I hope our comments can help others know how to handle their livestock and find the best treatment.

      @thissideofthefirmament  Před 2 lety +7

      In fact, we have 5 goats we bought who'd already been disbudded who now have mangled, bleeding, weak horns growing in abstract ways out of their skulls. Disbudding often turns out badly, and can even cause permanent brain damage. Again, we will never disbud.

    • @trishamartin9023

      Disbanding is only beneficial in production situations where spaces are confined. In that instance, they are removed to reduce injury to other animals or workers. However, when given adequate space, their horns are rarely an issue. A small, family operation doesn't have a need for disbudding. We personally do not prefer it.

    • @thissideofthefirmament
      @thissideofthefirmament  Před 2 lety +1

      I'm sorry I didn't explain it well in the video. To answer your question, no we absolutely did not leave this to build up just for a video. We had never experienced this ear build up with our goats before....and so as soon as we saw it we addressed the problem. I pulled out my phone to video it because I thought it could be a learning opportunity for other goat owners...as something to look out for. I did not think this video would become as popular as it did...I did not intend to hit the earwax algorithm, I didnt really even remember that there is a viral earwax following. But alas, it got popular. In the comment section someone mentioned this looked like mites, upon further research we determined it IS mites...but by that point Buster Brown's ears were MUCH improved after just cleaning them out with water as shown in the video. So we kept an eye on him for the following weeks and now months and I'm happy to report he's not had a reoccurrence of these ear mites. None of our other goats got this parasite in their ears...the best we can guess is that his immune system was weakened when we castrated him, and during that weakness the mites moved in. Now that both things are healed he's a completely healthy herd boss for his portion of our land. His summer coat is so shiny, one of these days we'll get around to an update video. Thank you for your concern. And PS...I don't know what "FFS" stands for. But I hope this answer helps ease your mind. :) Mikaela
