Robust perching and landing with quadrotors for surveillance. Work done at the University of Pennsylvania, GRASP Lab. Here is a link to the paper: www.seas.upenn....
@Cyborg1170 Your wrong Cybord... they use a 21 camera system to control the flight and a computer program controls it. He says this in the first series of videos but perhaps you did not catch it as it is rather quick.
They should make the camera a detachebale unit, have the Quadrotor fly up and have the camera unit stick to a surface and detach so that the Quadrotor can go pick up and drop off other ones.
@musicResistances Einstein later felt it had been his "one great mistake" writing the letter to Roosevelt and signed the Russell-Einstein Manifesto a few days before he died. Scientists have an obligation to consider the moral dimensions of their work. "'Once the rockets are up, who cares where they come down? That's not my department', says Wernher von Braun."
When the propulsion gets updated you will have these things flying on their own and landing in docking stations for refuel auto. Might use this for bad? But I'd like it to fly me to work.
To everyone terrified of these things.. you see those IR lights surrounding the room ? They are giving a near real-time 3d picture of their surroundings for these things to maneuver so precisely. I dont think thats going to be portable anytime soon.
Very good performance. I think this it's not project objective but research could get better results using a digital (rather than a analog) video camera.
@beefknuckles Indeed a valid point. It's unfortunate that our worlds brightest minds develop such useful technologies yet we all know they will most likely be used negatively towards human prosperity. Interesting times are ahead for the human race.
@beefknuckles Hey... your counter position causes a frustration of purpose that only serves to reinforce the establishment of physical / system based capital.
@musicResistances Some knives are designed as weapons, actually. And yes, I would condemn someone who decided to sell great quantities of knives, even butcher knives, to organized crime, for example. The name of the video here is "Quadrotor Surveillance." People aren't worried about the existence of small helicopters with four rotors, but about using them to spy on people. What are you missing? Which "noble" use are you forecasting here?
What kind of camera transmitter and receiver are you using? I can get one to work like yours but the distance is severely limited for a live feed. LOS is 100m. Through Walls is like 100 ft (pretty pathetic imo). Any tips from someone at the Univ. of Penn.?
@beefknuckles Like everything else in this world, every thing has positive uses, and negative uses. There is almost nothing as a completely negative engineering creation. Before people scream NUCLEAR, look into its many uses outside of wars and power generation.
@musicResistances "When someone is inventing something, he/she doesn't have to think all the possible ways that it can be used[.]" This is just bare assertion, backed up solely by the force of your own word. I can "argue" just as well by simply saying the opposite. I think it's incumbent upon people, all people, to consider the consequences of their actions. Is that wrong? Your point, such as it is, is that one class of people, inventors, should be exempted, for reasons you don't explain.
@beefknuckles Do you really think these guys are thinking about privacy or human rights for even one second while working on this project? You are very naive.... They just try to find customers and companies to sell their abilities and knowledge to... I think you forgot for a moment that we live in a capitalist world my friend.
You guys are developing tomorrows surveillance technology. Amazing.
keep it up, this is the future of independent films!
@beefknuckles You can't stop the evolution of technology. No matter what it's used for, good or evil.
@Einstien121
I doubt it would be difficult to mount there micro SD card with few GB of memory.
Awesome project, camera drones are upon us.
@frother I am with you on that one!

I love that the program they made to control these is called Skynet

@beefknuckles
An honest person has nothing to hide.
On another note, I for one, welcome our new robotic overlords!
Superb !!!!!

(4 years later)
@josh22922 coast guard already has much more advance ones like the preditor.

awesome!
The rotors have a sort of discordant pipe organ sound to them in this one, is it from the uneven weight distribution?
They need to combine these with that Dyson air ring tech so it won't make any noise at all.
han recurrido a istemas de inferencia difusa o redes neuronales?
It has begun...
1:15 as it slowly comes off it's perch. Scary.
I have a feeling the sound of the rotors may give it away...
That bit at 0:35 scares the shit out of me.
RF sheilding needed from those quadrotor motor brushes
@beefknuckles I think I know what you mean. It needs a Razor Blade to make it look more like a Manhack :D
I imagine it would actually have to be much quieter to be used stealthily.
@beefknuckles Indeed a valid point. It's unfortunate that our worlds brightest minds develop such useful technologies yet we all know they will most likely be used negatively towards human prosperity. Interesting times are ahead for the human race.

Tweeted because its incredible technology
If I see this in my school the janitor is going to have to work over time

Cool. Also, terrifying.
Buffer the motor, waterproof it, and give it a NV camera and it's going straight into the hands of SEAL Team 6.

yes
reminds me of the Toclafane
This is some Ghost Recon: Future Solider shit!
But this thing is auto-pilot or not?
The camera reminds me to terminator so much...
0:26 That's some robocop shit right their
How many GRE values needed to enter GRASP lab?
OH JESUS CHRIST, IT CAN SEE US.
I guess its time to boy down to our new quadrotor overlords...
Can it dodge bullets?
@003exia
unless... they decorate it to look like a giant wasp xD
maybe add a stinger too in case they need to take down a suspect or so.
Could I possibly buy one of these from you?
@beefknuckles Like everything else in this world, every thing has positive uses, and negative uses. There is almost nothing as a completely negative engineering creation. Before people scream NUCLEAR, look into its many uses outside of wars and power generation.
@beefknuckles I don't mind being filmed as long as I can film back. Sousveillance. Google it.
@BeNerdish This is a fake it isn't really an autonomous vehicle, he is controlling it through RC.
the noise will make it useless for surveillance
@OpeAaron It will be armed, so you probably won't.

The technology that noise cancelled the vuvuzelas for world cup + this = o_O
0:35 it looking at you
It sounds like a swarm of bees. I'm not sure that's going to work for surveillance.
Four-propellered Big Brother is watching you!
THE HACKS!!!
@wizwom Thats exactly why its going to work. Would be a lot harder if it sounded like helicopter... xD
I felt kind of dirty watching the little camera move around.
If in 20 years I'm being followed by those things damn rights I'm gonna start whipping rocks at it.
reply, why not just recover soon as you thrown it..
Heh, who do you think is funding this research?
Soon the government is going to have these EVERYWHERE!!!
Metal Gear.
sounds like a vuvuzela
HERE COME THE HACKS
@beefknuckles don't do illegal shit then...
inb4 a million new views because of the new Call of Duty.
Dude! Use your powers for good. Please!
bioshock security
@PlatypuSPawn CITIZENS EMPOWER YOUR SELF
private !! private!!! private capital!
Alishanmao has better FPV systems.
now make it 100 times bigger and give it weapons :)
Who do you think is paying for these studies in the first place? lol
Please don't give the US government this.
