I love the small window! Keep it !! and perhaps underneath you could build a cabinet - like a built in chest of drawers or shelves with a cupboard door closing it off from view. And keep the top of the cupboard flat as a desktop or tabletop under the window where you could sit a plant or glass art and take advantage of the natural light. Maybe even put an open shelf above the window for boxes, baskets or books. Still a built in storage with perhaps drawers would hold smaller items,,electronics or office supplies.

Your biggest health risk at the moment is not using appropriately sized step ladders for the job. You can be standing on an upside down bucket and fall breaking your back. This is no joke. Stop unnecessarily risking injury because your being lazy about your safety. Also, use that giant garbage bag as you go to toss as much debris in as you can rather than throwing every last thing on the floor first. Clean up will go much faster. Having an open fireplace in the room might be attractive but it will be a source of cold and hot air probably in part why it was sealed off. Don't underestimate the cost of bringing an old hidden fireplace up to code. You become a true homeowner when you start doing upgrades and maintenance yourself. Congrats!!!!!

Absolutely agree. My parents neighbour slipped while mending gutters on the ground floor of his house. Broke both ankles badly. The healing process took so long he had to give up his career which involved standing up all day and ultimately he had to retire early. Possibly could have been avoided with more care and correct equipment. But he’ll always wonder. Watching him trying to walk up the road with two sticks five years on……..yikes.

It's inspiring to see you dive in a project like this :) I would be afraid out of my pants to try to do something like this. Please share all the mistakes it really helps me put things in perspective because when I'm doing something and mess it up I feel like I'm the only one that makes mistakes. It's refreshing to see you are not oversweating on mistakes.
It would be awesome if you figure out how to utilize the space in the old fireplaces.
Where I'm from only internal insulation is not recomended due to damp in the walls inside the insulation. We practice mainly external insulation. But I guess this is not something that's possible in UK, especially on old building to keep their facades original.

I started watching your videos because I love your accent, lol, and then I stayed because of the interesting content and the good design aesthetics. Plus, it was fun to see someone do renovations using hired help instead of doing it themselves. A lot of the channels I watch are all DIY centered. But now the next project here is you learning how to ‘do it yourself’ and I think that’s grand. Looking forward to seeing the renovation take shape!
P.S. You got the TLC meaning just right.

I think you are amazing for taking on such a big project. I wouldn’t even attempt it now I am older - everything hurts for longer these days. I think having natural light coming into the room is always nice so I would keep the window. There is nothing wrong with your arms. There will be people out there just wishing to have your build.

Keep the window or replace with a stained glass detail. Storage is great but details are better ⭐️

I would keep the window and fireplace. They will be a lovely added bonus to the house. You can do many creative things with them that will make the place look stunning and not stale and institutionalise and those arms of yours will be pumping guns by the time you finish your project. Can't wait for the update. Great job.

Well done, George! Looking forward to seeing the progression! Personally, I love windows and fireplaces, but not if they invite mold growth. They end up being a pain and expensive to maintain. Good luck with the rest of the reno!

Leaving that window will allow for cross ventilaton since the other window is on the wall directly opposite. People forget that a really successful space accounts for space, air and light, not just space.

Good for you George, jumping in and finding parts of the renovation you can do yourself. Save money, learn new skills and build your confidence, very smart move. Demolition is definitely a good place to start, any good contractor would appreciate a homeowner who is willing to pitch in and do manual labor and cleaning up the job site, and it saves you paying top dollar for sweeping up and taking out the debris. Watch other CZcams videos for learning more about renovation. I’m in America so it’s different here, we don’t have many stone cottages. But I have noticed that European and UK builders are building with wood stud walls, insulation and drywall like we do here so possibly watching American builders would also be worthwhile. All that to say, you’re doing all right, get in there and try new things. You’re a kind and honest soul we can see that, we enjoy coming along with your adventures, thanks for sharing. Sending prayers and love from Indiana.

I think I would keep the window. I'm not a big fan of fireplaces, so I would consider adding something like built-in storage into the fireplaces if it would fit with my idea of how I want to place the furniture. But that is your house so do whatever you like with it 🙂
I would have also knocked down the cupboard to have more open space and to be more free in placing furniture.
Thanks for showing your mistakes. And your arms, they are totally fine. ☺

Keep the window... Some batural light
Old fireplaces. I did a similar job in my house a few yeas back and found a few old fireplaces behind walls. I kept two of them as "features" .
I didn't get as far as tearing down relatively new insulation though. Mind you, i dont think much had been done before that since the house was built in 1902 so there wasnt any "oh f**k" moments

    • @Patchy
      @Patchy  Před 25 dny +2

Cheers Dave! I'm still not convinced on the window. I know the popular response will be 'keep it' but I'd honestly prefer the storage. That's cool that you kept a couple for features. I'll need to look at ideas on that one myself.

@@Patchy just a balancing act. How much storage room will you lose by keeping it v do you actually need the extra storage?
Yeh, I was lucky my brother works in refurbishing old houses, specialising in old brickwork like old fires etc. he was able to give a dig out on integrating the old fireplaces into the new plasterboard etc. Looks great so far.

Keep the window and leave the walls and roof timbers exposed it’s hard work but so worth it. I am in the process of revealing my Yorkshire stone internal walls and 200 year old roof with railway sleepers the mess is horrendous but every time I reveal another feature including a surprise window I feel a sense of achievement.
