Just as a safety tip! I noticed that the plate that you were microwaving the potatoes on had metallic detailing which can cause sparks and even a fire when used in the microwave! Maybe that was the burnt smell that Nick was smelling!

A game changing tip when you’re about to cook steak is to take it out of the fridge at least 30 minutes before cooking it so that it comes up to room temperature, that way it cooks faster and more evenly! (And don’t worry, it’s safe to let beef come to room temp as long as it doesn’t sit out for more than 2 hours).
Another tip is to add the salt immediately before starting to cook it that way the salt doesn’t sit on the steak long enough to draw out moisture from the steak, making it dry and less likely to caramelize! Also, always add the oil to the steak and never to the pan! It’s healthier as it doesn’t allow your steak to sit in oil and fry! It also prevents the excess oil on the pan from burning and creating lots of smoke!
