- Maddur is synonymous with Maddur Vade, the iconic century year old snack. I made a train trip to the small town Maddur to take a bite of the legendary vada.
The hawkers selling vade in trains starts 30 km before Maddur and extends to a similar distance past it, beginning at Ramanagara in one direction and Mandya in the other.
It was in April 1917 that its famous vada first appeared in Vegetarian Tiffin Room (VTR) in Maddur’s only railway station.
We were fortunate to meet the owner of Maddur Tiffanys restaurant- D.N Chathura. He is a fourth generation descendant of H.D. Hebbar who managed Vegetarian Tiffin Room ( VTR ) at the station from 1948 to 1973. Chathura happily shared the Maddur vada story with me.
Family legend has it that on a particularly busy day, he just mixed up some ingredients and instead of making them in the shape of pakoras, which would take longer to cook, he flattened the mixture into discs and fried them. The result was a new snack that became popular as Maddur vada.
We also oversaw the preparation of Vadas deep inside the kitchen of Maddur Tiffanys restaurant.
It was a perfect bite of history spanning over 100 years. It was about how a simple vada transformed the landscape of a small town. For me, this is the real food heritage of India

Today the "Vade" become the icon of the Maddur. Jai Karnataka.
South snacks along with coffee, then only its complete 😇
Welcome to Karnataka Sir ✌️✌️
Maddur Vade is the premium snack of Karnataka
Haha... idiot u r
Anubhav.. I like watching your videos. As an ex delhiite and now an nri this is a treat. The best thing is you seem to focus on the food and history but there are no pretentions or antics. The fact that you often go on the tour with locals is also great. Your tourguides also appear to be authentic foodies.. Which is awesome. Thank you for being so simplistic and pure! Also thank you for covering so many dishes that are not the most well known but certainly attention deserving.
Maddur vada taste is ultimate here.
Mouth watering 😍 watching Maddur vadai love from chennai
Thanks for visiting my favorite maddur because it is my mother's favorite and native ❤❤❤
Indian railroad trip makes us feel nostalgia of good old days.
Karnataka State, especially Bangalore, is one of the fastest growing economies in India. It is said to be Silicon Valley in India.
Karnataka dish is a vegetarian and non-vegetarian dish.
Speaking of Indian cuisine is curry but Karnataka cuisine does not feel like curry is the leading role.
Certainly, I use garlic and mustard.
Bread is onion, coconut, vegetables and wheat mixed, fried in oil.
Spicy is also moderate ...
Sweetness is moderate ...
It feels like that.
Compared to other parts of India, I felt a mysterious calm because I knew only a part of Karnataka.
I also learned India a bit.
Thank you very much.
The video of this time was also fun. Thank you very much. Please tell us about India from now on. Thanking you in advance.
Thank you very much. I am looking forward to next time.
I like your little summaries in every video. Where are you from?

There is a restaurant in Rajajinagar 4th block, I used to have these two from there.I have never tasted any Maddur vade and Mangalore bhajji like that anywhere else.
Madhur vadey was extremely famous those days 36 years back especially at the Maddur railway station with awesome chutney , the size of the vadey was big too with great taste.
I am interested in seeing the villages of Karnataka, pure culture of any state lies in its villages, I have experienced this in many states despoite being from metro city Delhi. Really I love India has so much diversity. I am waiting for stupid post graduation to finish so that I can tour India

Since you are in Maddur, you can go just 5 to 10km interior to some village, show their lifestyle, temples, culture, food, agriculture. Its the land of sugarcane, rice,Ragi, coconut trees.
You can also explore Ragi Ball with upsaru(just water & salt with chilli paste), for non-veg it is heaven.
If you come to bangalore try few old known Military Hotel for non veg. 👍
@@delhifoodwalks bro i am north indian. Try mysore bajji but best one i found was in hyderbad.
Local delicacies are awesome in south.
Normal commercial restaurants cant provide the real taste.
Thank you very much. Also please tell me about India.
@@hp365 you need a lot of time to explore india or you can do it part wise. Every 100km ahead language changes in india so is the food. Food has really lot of variety in india whether it be veg or non veg. Personally speaking ypu should start exploring india from southern states of india then move ahead to chaotic life of india in north and have a visit to eastern india to have a pleasant experience again.
Well where are you from?
I am Japanese. I have never been to India. The thing about India is about yoga books and CZcams, a little understanding.
@@hp365 if you want to have real experience of yoga you can visit ashram (temple where saints live) in moutain region. You can experience natural beauty and learn yoga from best teachers/guru(saints).
If you spend little time to settle here in india and discover it with slow pace you will enjoy it more and would surely have best experience of your life time.
Food is just part of indian life style which is highly versatile.
Sir u can try bidadi thatte idli at Bidadi, which come before maddur when u travel from bangalore to Mysore.
I have been there. ❤️
The first time story was in the railway platform, when the contractor made out of available materials this maddur vade. The next day he did not repeat and made usual tiffin. The daily passengers insisted the same. This version was born. The late mysore maharaja would travel by train and the guard would make arrangements to get vada at maddur station to the coupe coach of maharaja. Reported way back in weekly column of newspaper.
Lot of improvement Anubhav, glad you are taking comments constructively!
Bro my native place you have visited wow👌👌👌!!!
It's believed that in 16th century, in this city they used to manufacture and store explosives and gunpowder("maddu" in kannada)..that is why the place came to be known as Madduru..
Mysore wodeyar kingdom army and later tipu army and his chieftains used to manufacture and store ammunition here.Gundu maddu is the kannada word for gunpowder.
Even the famous Mysore rockets were partly stored here .This was the first time rockets were used anywhere in the workd in a battle.
The british stole the technology from mysoreans and used this successfully in their fights with Americans
The british used to acknowledge several times that the only military they considered as equal to european military in india was the mysore army.
The british never used to " celebrate"their wins against indians. But they declared and celebrated grandly one week celebrations after they won the third mysore war .
Welcome to Karnataka...
Wow.. amazing
I am from Davangere and currently living in Washington USA, Davangere is just 260 KMS from Bangalore and it is famous place for variety of dosa and it is ideal place for butter dosa, mirchi baji, masala puffed rice etc. I suggest you to explore food culture of Davangere once... Please i am waiting for your videos and i hope you will....
Sir/ Madam, why don't you please come back to Karnataka. We are missing our fellow Kannadigas. Bangalore is filled up with North Indians. I miss the old Bangalore when people use to speak in Kannada. All our people studied and went abroad and settled there and left Bangalore vacant. Now Bangalore is getting filled up with useless assholes who curse the city, the cold weather and the they are against everything about the city. I just wish all the original inhabitants of Karnataka/Bangalore come back😣
I am very very very happy for this recipe
Amazing video

Tq very much nice
I love your videos..
Yummy...
Nice explanation
Love ur videos
Everything is correct but Maddur Vada is invented by Late B Madhwaraya Biliya (known as Madhwachar), owner of Maddur Railway station hotel in emergency situation. Diwan of Mysore Kingdom Mr. Mirza Ismail used to go to Madras often from Mysore in a special train owned by kingdom to offer gift to British. When he was going through Maddur he used to have food in Maddur Railway station always because of the quality of the food and friendship with Mr. Madhwachar.
Once when Mr. Mirza Ismail and his parivaar came all dishes were finished and Mr. Madhwachar was under pressure to prepare something . He took some of the onions, rava, mirchi and ghee and prepared some Vada and served it to King's pariwar. Mr. Mirza Ismail was very much pleased with the taste of Vada , and he gave the name Madhwa's Vada (in Kannada Madhwar Vada) and hence it became famous in the name of the City Maddur.
Hi, over years, we all have enjoyed the tasty maddur Vada from maddur Tiffany's. This is the first time Mr.Anubhav had the opportunity to look into the kitchen n got an idea of how it's being prepared. Do we have a chance of getting it's recipe. Hope I'm not crossing my limits.
