  • Maddur is synonymous with Maddur Vade, the iconic century year old snack. I made a train trip to the small town Maddur to take a bite of the legendary vada.
The hawkers selling vade in trains starts 30 km before Maddur and extends to a similar distance past it, beginning at Ramanagara in one direction and Mandya in the other.
It was in April 1917 that its famous vada first appeared in Vegetarian Tiffin Room (VTR) in Maddur’s only railway station.
We were fortunate to meet the owner of Maddur Tiffanys restaurant- D.N Chathura. He is a fourth generation descendant of H.D. Hebbar who managed Vegetarian Tiffin Room ( VTR ) at the station from 1948 to 1973. Chathura happily shared the Maddur vada story with me.
Family legend has it that on a particularly busy day, he just mixed up some ingredients and instead of making them in the shape of pakoras, which would take longer to cook, he flattened the mixture into discs and fried them. The result was a new snack that became popular as Maddur vada.
We also oversaw the preparation of Vadas deep inside the kitchen of Maddur Tiffanys restaurant.
It was a perfect bite of history spanning over 100 years. It was about how a simple vada transformed the landscape of a small town. For me, this is the real food heritage of India

Anubhav.. I like watching your videos. As an ex delhiite and now an nri this is a treat. The best thing is you seem to focus on the food and history but there are no pretentions or antics. The fact that you often go on the tour with locals is also great. Your tourguides also appear to be authentic foodies.. Which is awesome. Thank you for being so simplistic and pure! Also thank you for covering so many dishes that are not the most well known but certainly attention deserving.

Indian railroad trip makes us feel nostalgia of good old days.
Karnataka State, especially Bangalore, is one of the fastest growing economies in India. It is said to be Silicon Valley in India.
Karnataka dish is a vegetarian and non-vegetarian dish.
Speaking of Indian cuisine is curry but Karnataka cuisine does not feel like curry is the leading role.
Certainly, I use garlic and mustard.
Bread is onion, coconut, vegetables and wheat mixed, fried in oil.
    Spicy is also moderate ...
    Sweetness is moderate ...
    It feels like that.
Compared to other parts of India, I felt a mysterious calm because I knew only a part of Karnataka.
I also learned India a bit.
    Thank you very much.

The first time story was in the railway platform, when the contractor made out of available materials this maddur vade. The next day he did not repeat and made usual tiffin. The daily passengers insisted the same. This version was born. The late mysore maharaja would travel by train and the guard would make arrangements to get vada at maddur station to the coupe coach of maharaja. Reported way back in weekly column of newspaper.

Mysore wodeyar kingdom army and later tipu army and his chieftains used to manufacture and store ammunition here.Gundu maddu is the kannada word for gunpowder.
Even the famous Mysore rockets were partly stored here .This was the first time rockets were used anywhere in the workd in a battle.
The british stole the technology from mysoreans and used this successfully in their fights with Americans
The british used to acknowledge several times that the only military they considered as equal to european military in india was the mysore army.
The british never used to " celebrate"their wins against indians. But they declared and celebrated grandly one week celebrations after they won the third mysore war .

Everything is correct but Maddur Vada is invented by Late B Madhwaraya Biliya (known as Madhwachar), owner of Maddur Railway station hotel in emergency situation. Diwan of Mysore Kingdom Mr. Mirza Ismail used to go to Madras often from Mysore in a special train owned by kingdom to offer gift to British. When he was going through Maddur he used to have food in Maddur Railway station always because of the quality of the food and friendship with Mr. Madhwachar.
Once when Mr. Mirza Ismail and his parivaar came all dishes were finished and Mr. Madhwachar was under pressure to prepare something . He took some of the onions, rava, mirchi and ghee and prepared some Vada and served it to King's pariwar. Mr. Mirza Ismail was very much pleased with the taste of Vada , and he gave the name Madhwa's Vada (in Kannada Madhwar Vada) and hence it became famous in the name of the City Maddur.
