- Mangalorean cuisine has evolved over the years to include different ethnicities like Beary Muslims, Mangalorean Catholics, Saraswath Brahmins, and Bunts to name a few. Since Mangalore is a Coastal city, fish forms the staple diet of most people and Manglorean cuisine is generally spicy and rice-based.
Karishma took us to an old restaurant Hotel Maharaja to try some classic manglorean delicacies. Here we had all mangaloreans favourite dish Kori rutti, Chicken ghee roast, Neer dosa and shell fish.
One of the city's most popular go-to-spots for authentic Mangalorean cuisine is Giri Manjas. This nondescript eatery is tucked away in Mangaluru's Car Street. Established in 1984, this small place with ancient interiors, is a humble restaurant which has a homely ambiance. The restaurant can seat 40 people at a time and serves up to 200 portions of fish fry every day.
For the evening snacks, Karishma took us to another local eatery- Karthik Hotel. We ordered the famous Kallada tea also known as KT, a three layered tea where the bottom layer is the condensed milk, layer above is the foam and on top goes the decoction. We also tried Banana podi, that is fried banana bhaji, Goli baje, and Mangalore buns
Next, Karishma introduced us to Halli Mane Rotti - a mobile fast-food joint that exclusively serves North Karnataka delicacies. The food joint offers three types of rotis made of ragi, jowar and rice.
with vegetable subjis, spicy chutney, and chicken curry.
Opposite Kadri Park in Mangalore is a food street where you can try paani puri and other street dishes. We had Charmuri - a kind of bhel with puffed rice, coconut oil, and raw mango. We also had grape juicy at the local hangout place dinky dine.
We ended our Manglore food journey at the iconic ice cream shop Pabba’s. We tried the classic multilayered gadbad which is simply a mix of three different icecream flavours with dry fruits and flavoured syrups. We also had marzi pan- a pan flavoured kulfi.

Khalid Akhtar if you're Dakkani from Mangalore then probably my family knows yours because I belong to one of the oldest and well known Mangalorean Urdu speaking Muslim khandaan. Our community used to be very small back then. We have a few relatives who migrated to Pakistan after the partition.

my naana and naani were mangalorians so we are true mangalorians in our life style from idli chatni to sukha machhi n fried crab our cuisine reflects mangalorian taste i miss kokum that we use to put in machhi ki curry and my fav bimli ka achhar which my mother's khala always send us cant get these things in pak

It's been almost a year since I left Mangalore, missing Giri Manjas for the sea-food along with Machli/Gajale. Definitely, missing the banana Podi from Karthik Hotel, which is just a half a KM from where I grew up.

@Sukesh Salian Wannabe? Masala Dosa, Gadbad Icecream, Chicken Ghee Roast all were invented in udupi. It's the other way round of what you said. Udupi Hotels are famous all over India. South Indian food was introduced & became popular through Udupi's.
Udupi cuisine is vegetarian cuisine of tuluvas from Tulunadu,it just got name as udupi because of udupi temple,and people wanted to market it as pure veg temple food.But its a legacy of all tuluvas,not only udupi tuluvas

I love Mangaluru and few Vegetarian Restaurants. I lived in Mangaluru for 10 months in 2009-2010 and again for 5 years from 2012 to 2016. Now also I miss Mangaluru and I sincerely feel it was my birth place in previous births. Very nice City and get versatile food items.
