The music used at the beginning and end of the story is an extract from 'Duet for Two Violins' by Luigi Boccherini, Op 5 N2 Larghetto.
About the author: Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was a Scottish doctor and author, celebrated for his world-famous creation Sherlock Holmes, the consulting detective who set the standard for crime fiction into the 20th century and beyond. In addition to his Holmes stories, Conan Doyle is also remembered for his fantasy and science fiction novels and stories, including 'The Parasite' and 'The Lost World' series of novels, his historical fiction, and for numerous short stories contributed to magazines over a 40 year period. He was knighted by King Edward VII in the 1902 Coronation Honours.
'The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle' was first published in the January 1892 edition of The Strand Magazine. It was the fifth short story to feature the character of Sherlock Holmes and was subsequently re-published in book form when the first 12 stories were collected together as 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' later that year. It has been frequently adapted for radio and television; it is one of only six surviving episodes of the 1960s BBC television series starring Peter Cushing as Holmes, and it also featured in the first series of the 1980s Granada TV series starring Jeremy Brett.
A note on the text: for those reading along with the book, please be aware that there may be some minor differences between the text of the story as originally printed in The Strand (1892) and the later book publications. For clarity, the text read here is the original 1892 Strand Magazine version.

Awesome, thank you for your time and sharing.
I am a raging insomniac and work 12 hour shifts as a nurse. You are THE person that I have on repeat all night. The only way I can escape overthinking and get an ounce of sleep ❤
I'm glad to help. As someone who has suffered bouts of insomnia in the past, I sympathise. Best wishes to you
I work from sunup to sundown, and I too listen to Simon and Hugh Frazier to fall asleep. Hope you get better soon. 🤞
@@BitesizedAudiosorry to hear about your occasional insomnia, Simon. I think we've all pretty much experienced spates of sleep failure here and there. It's no day at the beach to be sure.
The question is.. do you, yourself, listening to you, yourself, put you, yourself to sleep as well as you put US to sleep?😉
Because it is you and Watson and Holmes who carry me into Dreamland most nights, also! 🥱
12 hour shifts! Goodness! I haven't been in hospital often, most times just to give birth, but I know that nurses are the true heroes of the piece . And collectively, you certainly deserve more sleep then you likely are able to get.
You have my gratitude and you very much are acknowledged and appreciated! The truth is that no one could bear a hospital stay without you guys, so please take care and sleep well.
Simon absolutely is such a force for calming down those frayed nerves!
It also becomes clear what a talented wonder, and certainly prolific writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was.
Be well💙
Best wishes from Germany.... I myself working in a hospital.... is a hard work.... nobody else can understand what this means...... stay strong.... ❤️🇩🇪
The very voice for Yuletide. Many thanks. Long lost, the London of only 4 million inhabitants-- of whom so few hailed from The Indies or Africa.
Just as I was thinking how wonderful it would be to have a holiday story from Simon, here you are! Thank you, sir!
Glad to know that, thanks Charlotte. I've not managed to do as many Christmas stories this year due to theatre commitments, but this is one I've long had in mind. I hope you enjoy. Best wishes and thanks for your support
The traditional Sherlock Holmes seasonal contribution!!!!
Quite so!
I absolutely, resolutely, LOVE your voice. I would listen to you if you were reading a microwave manual. So soothing, calming. I’m going to England for the first time and secretly I think “wouldn’t be great if I spot you somewhere??! I would buy you a pint, as ya’ll say there and ask questions about your craft! PLEASE don’t ever stop reading to us :))😊
Thank you! 😊 I hope to keep going for a while yet!
@@BitesizedAudioDo you like to meet people who have read your works, your fans?
One of the better short tales of Sherlock
One of my favorite Holmes tales! I also love the Grenada Television version with Jeremy Brett. I watch it every Christmas season! Thanks for reading it out for us!
You're most welcome! I'm a great fan of the Granada adaptations too, especially the earlier series (they were filmed near where I grew up). Although I've not seen that particular episode for some time now I seem to remember it was one of the best. I must dig it out and re-watch it
Yes! The opening scenes of the Grenada version tracing the scintillating carbuncle’s history and the arrival home of the Countess to find it gone are some of the best of the whole series!💚
@BitesizedAudio are you from the North West Simon? A lot of it was filmed here in Liverpool, Cheshire & Manchester 😊 I hope you will let us know if you ever come to work in Liverpool I'd love to see you. Just recently saw The Woman in Black at the Playhouse, it was excellent. Thanks for a fantastic upload, Holmes is my favourite detective 📚
@samkennedy5554 I am indeed! I grew up in Cheshire, and so many nearby stately homes - Adlington Hall, Dunham Massey, Tatton Park, Gawsworth Hall, and so many others were regular filming locations not only for Sherlock Holmes but other Granada series of the time (Brideshead for example). I still have family in Cheshire so visit often. I'll certainly let you know if I'm working in that neck of the woods in the future... I've toured plays to Liverpool and Manchester in the past, but not recently. I'll keep you posted!
Brett is definitely 'my' Holmes. He was wonderful.
Simon, my mum lives in Cheshire too. She would definitely give you a cuppa and a mince pie for this lovely treat! 🔹🪿
Thank you. This is one of the best period Christmas stories.
This is one of my favorite Sherlock Holmes stories only behind the Priory School and the Musgrave Ritual. The Granada adaptation with Jeremy Brett my favorite film/TV version. Well done Simon. Bravo.
Splendid! One of my favourite Holmes stories! Thank you once again, Simon.
What a smashing Christmas surprise to come home to today! Ta muchly, fella 😀♥️🎄
Yay a Christmas goose story -love this Holmes “gem” Thank you Simon! 🙏🏽🎄💎
Ah, I see what you did there! Thanks Stephanie
Nice. This is one of my faves from Sherlock's short stories. It's got a great mix of inductive reasoning, clue following, person tracking-down, interesting side characters, and a happy ending for all parties. Very nice to hear it from my favourite posh British narrator: Mr. Simon Stanhope.
Happy holidays to you, Simon, and to everyone who reads this.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you as ever, and Merry Christmas
I can't wait to listen. I'm sure it will be mesmerizing. They always are.
Yes! Excellent choice for a Christmas episode. A bonny blue egg indeed.

That's lovely to know: glad I was able to oblige at last!
No matter what audiobook I'm in the middle of; as soon as you have a new one I jump in! Thank you so much Simon 💓

Ah yes, I take it you mean the M. R. James story? It's on my list - I'd like to read more MRJ as and when I can. I'll keep it in mind for the new year

Thank you, and the same to you and yours
Merry Christmas, Simon. Thank you for thinking of us.
Thanks Tammy, same to you. I'm looking forward to getting back in the recording booth more regularly in the new year
Of course. THE Arthur Conan Doyle Christmas story. I should have known! Well, it was great to return to it through this excellent reading. And I look forward to your "Lot No. 249" in 2024.
It is! I wondered if the hint I gave was too broad.... Looking forward to seeing Lot No. 249 this weekend, and it's certainly on my list for the future...
OH SIMON !! I too can fall asleep to your short stories. God Bless You & Yours As You Start this New Year! Thank you so much . Goodnight 💤😴 🌙, From Montana!
So so much enjoyed. Haven't managed to concentrate on reading books recently but listening to your readings feels just as exciting. 😊
Thank you Simon, this is fantastic! Such a great story.
Glad to know you enjoyed it, thanks Maria
At the moment I need to listen to something on youtube in order to fall asleep, especially after I wake up in the middle if the night to go to the bathroom. It's very difficult to get back to sleep after that because my thoughts start racing and I get anxious. I usually get bored very quickly with the videos I play in the background, so it's difficult having to constantly find new material to fall asleep to. However, this has been my go to video for the past month and I don't mind playing it almost every night. The voice is pleasant, the story is not overly interesting, nor scary. Still, I never get past the 10 minute mark because I fall asleep. I stil don't know what happens in this story, I haven't listened to it while awake.😅
Your stories are the perfect relaxing accompaniment to a good fire, knitting and a dram. Perfect winter's evening. I'd love more non-ghost stories for next year. Compliments of the Season to you.
Perfect choice for Christmas!
I'd had it on my list for the last couple of Christmases, glad to get around to it at last!
What a wonderful Christmas present! Thank you so much Simon!
You're welcome Carol; and thank you for the coffee earlier, much appreciated
As always, thanks.
So we'll done in all respects.
From New Zealand
Full house for Christmas here. A few quiet moments and Simon to the rescue.
I hope you have a lovely festive season and manage to get some time to relax!
@@BitesizedAudio You too Simon. I'm back to hear this story again. I always listen three times to every story.
This was the most charming arrangement of a seasonal story I could possibly have wished for. Simply exquisite. The incidental music was especially well chosen. Wonderful. Compliments of the season to you and yours, Simon.
Thank you Ada; and the same to you
I love your goose salesman in this one 😂. Thank you so much for sharing your talents with us. A very Merry Christmas to you and yours, Simon.

Complements of the season todo el mundo, from a very cold Zamora, Spain. Feliz Navidad!
Thanks @Smyth Harris And the same to you from an unseasonably mild UK!
Very well read Sir...like always!
A valuable jewel named after a *boil* ... whee! Happy Christmas 🎅
Ha! Yes, quite so... although I think the medical term may be named after the gemstone, rather than the other way around!
@@BitesizedAudio from what I understand the term is from the Latin carbunculus which refers to a precious stone or a kind of tumor.
Wonderful performance as always Simon, one of my favourite Sherlock Holmes stories, thank you.
Glad to know you enjoyed it
thank you, Simon 🎄 & Merry Christmas💎to you & yours .
Thanks Joanne, and the same to you
You deserve more followers in my humble opinion.
Thank you, appreciated. More followers are always welcome! Thanks for listening, commenting and sharing, which all helps to spread the word I think.
Thank you so much Simon. What a great story! Perfect addition to our Christmas holidays. Happy Christmas to you and yours Beverly.
I like Simon and Carbuncle. !!! My favourite duo ....
Ah yes, a great duo. I'm tempted to say, with reference to your previous comment the other day, that they famously took something of a transpontine approach to troubled water...
New subscriber and I love the channel. I am watching the older ones until I can catch up. Great job!
Thanks for listening, and subscribing! More coming soon I hope
Merry Christmas 🎄🎁 soooooooo excited to see this !!! Thank you 😊👍

We must never underintigate what the horses of nature can wrought, in their equinatural portense. Porridge. Abstinethe, and curdlemore; porridge.
If I'm not mistaken the word is pronounced sodder, despite being spelled with an 'l' in it. Just letting you know.
Ah, I believe that may be an Americanism. It's generally pronounced "sohl-der" in standard English, though there may be some regional accent variations: the "sodder" pronunciation is given as an alternative in the dictionary and it sounds like that's the standard pronunciation in the US.
@@BitesizedAudio Well, okay. I'll go along with that. I fully admit that I don't know everything.
