    Watch Marc replace a timing chain kit on a 1.2 vauxhall corsa. These cars are very common to rattle on start up, even more so when on a cold start. A very common issue is the timing chain tensioner not holding sufficient pressure and allows slack in the chain until oil pressure builds to take up the slack.

    Followed this video step by step and finished the timing chain job for the first time on my opel corsa D 1.2.
    It was never a smooth job but somehow I finished it.
    Always use two Jack for lifting the car to be on safe side. and use the wooden stick as he is using in the video.
    The most important thing to keep in mind is to use the tools of high quality and you should have backup of everyting. If you failed at one step then you will be stuck. Just be careful in opening and closing of the screws, keep them in order.
    Opening of the main support between the body and the engine was really difficult, just follow tthis video steps and you are good to go.

    Excellent video, easy to follow. That's likely the next bigger repair required on my Corsa D 1.2. I've read though that it is highly recommended to remove the oil pan for this repair to properly align the timing chain cover.

    • @MTMMotorServices
      @MTMMotorServices  Před rokem +3

      Yes if you're able to remove the oil pan completely, that would be best. You have to suspend the engine from the top to do this which can get in the way. So be mindful of how you support your engine.

    Is there a way to do it without using engine hoist. I have my head off currently to do head gasket but found two bent valves so timing issue so changing timing chain. So I was going to support sump, put head back, then take off engine mount to do timing chain and then change sump gasket when timing cover and engine mount is back on. But if I need to take sump off in order to put timing cover back on then I guess I would need to support from the top but I'd rather not as I don't have a hoist so I'd have to get one and I'm doing it outside so it's not ideal. Anyway, any suggestion would be great.

    • @MTMMotorServices
      @MTMMotorServices  Před 2 lety

      Thanks for commenting. The vehicle is high mileage at over 100k miles. regular oil changes but due to a blown headgasket, the chain kit along with other components had been replaced around 4 years ago. unfortunately it's mainly down to poor design that the tensioners fail. very common problem.

    • @MTMMotorServices
      @MTMMotorServices  Před rokem +3

      The tell tale sign of a bad chain is a heavy rattle on start up.
      This noise will usually stop once sufficient oil pressure has built up.
      If this is left to worsen, the noise will stay for longer, until the chain has enough slack to jump timing and causing internal engine damage.

    Great video and very well explained thank you for taking the time out. Am I missing something or is the cam positions only maintained by the friction clamping action of the sprocket against the cam shaft face held under the bolt pressure. What stops it skidding round out of time ?
    I'm just in the process of this task and notice what an appalling design the engine mount is, probably the most difficult thing to remove. I would urge anyone to invest in a long reach 11mm combination spanner before starting this task.
    Given you need to slacken the sump bolts, i'm contemplating dropping it off completely and changing that gasket too. Ideal time to wash out all that sump crud. Anyone come across any sump gasket change issues ?

    • @robjenkins9450
      @robjenkins9450 Před 8 měsíci

      @@garymclellan5604There is most definitely a sump gasket, a thick aluminium one.. Anyone attempting to change a timing chain on a Corsa D without lowering the sump will come unstuck down the line. And if you’re going as far as the timing cover you may as well remove the sump and give it a proper clean out, including washing out the pick-up filter. Piping any form of gasket compound around the timing case, water pump or sump could lead to some breaking loose and getting lodged in a vital oil gallery.
