Batman Returns is the title of a beat 'em up video game for various platforms based on the film of the same name. The Sega console versions (i.e. Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Master System and Game Gear) were published by Sega while the NES and Super NES versions were developed and published by Konami. The MS-DOS version was published by Konami and developed by Spirit of Discovery. The Amiga version was developed by Denton Designs, and also published by Konami. There is also an Atari Lynx version, published by Atari Corporation.
The Sega Genesis and Sega CD versions of the game are more or less identical, as they are both two-dimensional platforming games similar in design to Sega's previous movie-based Batman game. The Genesis version of the game was released on December 29, 1992, during the same time Ecco the Dolphin was released for the Sega Genesis as well. The CD version of the game features a number of 3D racing levels that took advantage of the graphics hardware provided by the Sega CD unit, plus improved music in the form of CD audio with a number of animations featuring original artwork (not film photos). While different versions follow the movie's plot from start to finish, the Sega versions start after The Penguin kills the Ice Princess and puts the blame on Batman for killing her, as shown in the game's introductions.
The Sega Master System and Sega Game Gear versions of the game are side-scrolling platform games. However, the titles were created independently of the 16-bit versions. This version featured a unique branched level system, allowing players to choose from an easy and difficult route. The latter typically forced players to use rope swinging to navigate over large floorless areas in these versions of levels.
Leap with Batman into wild acrobatic battle! The Penguin has Gotham City gripped in his twisted flippers. Track the Dark Knight's most feared enemies through intense search-and-destroy danger! Attack the deranged Red Triangle Circus Gang with the Caped Crusader's own weapons. Swing on grappling hooks across collapsing rooftops. Pitch deadly Batarangs. Rage down goon-infested streets in the Batmobile. Waylay mobs of street thugs by hurling smoke bombs, wrist-shields and swarms of bats from Batman's Utility Belt. Dodge Catwoman's slashing claws and swinging kick. Duel with the homicidal Juggler. Fight murderous Gargoyles and machinegun-toting clowns. Then slog through poisoned sewers to a heart-stopping face-off in The Penguin's lair! Malibu Interactive (Genesis, Sega CD)

Very impressive longplay. 100% items, no damage. I didn't know that you could negate the bullets by punching them or throwing batarangs at them. This changes everything, time to crack out the emulator.

I'd argue about the "100% items" thing . For example an extra life was missed at 23:14. Still a great longplay though.
Not an entirely 100% items longplay ... there's a batman ears icon (life) on the top of the lamppost they don't pick up, at 23:13! 😅
But I can't rememeber if I was able to pick it up or not... Not quite sure gliding was effective.
An incredible playthrough indeed.
You can get that one up by gliding! He missed a secret area though at the beginning of the second sewer level
This is my big guilty pleasure when it comes to Genesis/Mega Drive games. I love this game, even though it’s so unpolished and brutally difficult.
There’s just something about the uncompromisingly gloomy mood.
I had this as a kid, I don't remember me or my older brother ever being able to beat it. I'll definitely have to give it another try at some point.
Completed this game several times back in the 90’s, always wondered what would happen if the Catwoman beat Batman at the end of the game, well the Batmobile pulls up and takes him away. Great game and thanks for posting, it brought back many happy memories.

This game is soooo difficult..I couldn't get pass through the stage where the Penguin dropped that big wheel or ball...
My sister, my mom and I tried to beat the ball at 20:36 we never could.

I remember playing this game a lot as a kid at my friends house but never actually beating it. That intro sequence is burned into my memory. I liked this games first stage but it just got worse and worse the further you got into it. The sounds of enemies exploding is the most harsh sound effect that I will never forget

I remember playing this all day Boxing Day at my grandparents house when I was 10 even got a Gaelic coffee. God I could cry thinking about it. I always think about that day and just thought I’d look it up. I didn’t get past act 2 by the looks of it

5:47 Ha, so that's how you do it. I noticed a difference in strategy when combating with cat you're not supposed to fight her head on because she likes to flip and do all all these gymnastics movements towards you, so you jump down from one level back up to the other to counterattack and repeat. ( i never did that before). I guess at the time, i was being too arrogant, thinking i could defeat her so easily because im batman, lol.

Never managed to beat this as a kid
For some reason this game has so much resemblance of Home Alone 2... Music soudns with similar sound fonts. Graphics also look identical in its semi-realistic style with mixed pixels. Same studio, I guess.
I still enjoy this batman game everything is not all about the graphics it's about the fun gameplay I enjoy😊

Til this day, i have yet mastered this game. The only trouble i remember having is getting past catwoman. I believe that is what made me stop playing it 😂
