- After a spectacular career at West Virginia, Kevin White was expected to be the franchise WR for the Chicago Bears, but things didn’t exactly work out for him. Kevin went from a high school afterthought, to a JUCO stud and eventually a college football superstar, but what happened once he got to the NFL? Today we will look at the sad story of Kevin White and why he never made it in the league. Enjoy!

As a WV and Bears fan, I was so excited when the Bears drafted him. I don't think he ever got a chance his last year in Chicago. Coach Nagy never used him at all. Nagy is on his way out as coach this year. I still hope for Kevin to show what he can do. His is a heart breaking story.

Years ago me and my gf at the time went to Chicago for the weekend for a wedding. On the flight home on Sunday back home to NY I see a gentleman sitting first class with crutches, a tall handsome black man with cool hair. I put 2 and 2 together oh ish it's Kevin White! I shook his hand and went to my seat in coach with the rest of the losers. My gf didn't believe me as I was explaining to her I had him on my fantasy team at one point and the bears were playing the Giants on MNF. As we were departing the plane he was macking to one of the stewardess he noticed me first and said he appreciated the love before and I wished him well in his recovery. Nice dude I will always root for him!
This year we are giving him a shot. Hope he finally shows out. He has talent. 2021 may be your year. Keep God first. You're a Saint now. WHO DAT!!!!

Bet he'd make a great high school or college coach. The guy can definitely teach a thing or two about perseverence and resiliency. Poor kid was just snakebit with injuries for my bears, hope he can hold together for the niners.
As a bears fan, I was hoping for Amari Cooper in that draft. Thought we should've traded up for him cuz it wouldn't have cost too much. But when we landed White I was really excited. Once he got hurt the first time I thought it was just a tough break but would have to wait a yr to see him like a red shirt. Then he got hurt again and was absolutely crushed cuz I thought he was never gonna be who we thought he could be but just had a tiny bit of hope that he would develop. Then 2 yrs ago I knew he would be on the top 10 busts list smh. I can't think of a more bears draft pick that is as big of a bust as him.

How can you say that he is the exact opposite of a bust when that would dictate that he has had a successful NFL career....which he has not. When you are drafted in the top 10 and you cannot even manage to secure a starting WR position with the Bears you are in fact a bust.....and I am a hardcore Bears fan.

This one did hurt, he was such a good kid and athletic freak. All those big injuries did ruin some of that athletic ability. I do hope he catches on (no pun intended) with the Niners.

We can’t technically label him as a bust and be correct at the same time. His body betrayed him.
Injuries or not, if a team wastes a 1st round pick (let alone 7th overall)- and you don’t contribute, you are a bust. He doesn’t even have 500 career yards or a stats tab on his WIKI page. He didn’t deserve to be one, but he’s a bust
He just got put off the practice squad and now he is supposed to plus for us(the 49ers) hopefully he will do good
I think with Kevin, injuries played a huge part but also that 2017 season, my bears had no good receivers, and Kevin got injured, if he was healthy that season, he still could have been on the bears.
He’d also probably still be on the roster if he crossed the goal line against the Patriots to take the game to overtime back in 2018

@@VeinySausage I don't deny that he didn't produce. I only object to the term bust. I don't think his body was made of glass, so to speak, otherwise he couldn't have had a 4 year college career, after high school. He was just unlucky, not untalented or a head case.
When you say worst pick, I think of Ryan Leaf or JaMarcus Russell. They just didn't have the talent or mindset. White was a good pick that went bad for uncontrollable (nobody's fault) reasons.

Injuries certainly played a part, but it wasn't the whole story. White wasn't worthy of the draft pick, in hindsight. He was a one year wonder, as the video points out. At WV, he was able to feast on terrible defenses for easy stats. But that one year, was really all he had ever shown, that was special, in HS or college. One year.
I think the lesson is a cautionary tale on drafting one year wonders, with a top ten draft pick. Yes...it can work out, but there is also a higher probability of it blowing up in your face...like this pick did.

That is the reality of pro sports. You need luck in so many ways. A new regime may not believe in you. The system may not utilize your strengths. There are personal matters that can derail you like any job. Back luck with injuries. Genetics are also a matter of luck...some guys take a lot longer to heal than others. The talent level is so high and the jobs so few, that his story is hardly unique. Just more known due to being a top-10 pick.

I remembered it was him and Amari Cooper were the best two Wr's coming out of college that year. Cooper being praised as the next superstar with Marvin Harrison or Jerry Rice like skill and Kevin White the next Julio Jones or Chad (Ocho) Johnson. It's a shame neither ever risen to their expectation but Cooper turns out to be a decent receiver in the league.

@@ScottFisherCFB yeah man 6'1" 230lbs with 4.4 speed. Had a crazy rookie year behind lesean McCoy and fizzled out with drug stuff and weight issues. I'm a big FSU fan and clearly remember how talented he was. I saw he signed in the cfl this year but they shut down the season. Was really looking forward to seeing him tear it up again.

That’s a damn lie ...he was complete healthy his last year in Chicago he just wasn’t good and was a healthy scratch almost every game ,he got a CHANCE with the Cardinals and didn’t make the team (again he was healthy ) and he got a chance with San Fran and couldn’t make the roster (practice team) he’s had plenty chances he just isn’t good

Scott, Kevin White was a huge bust. Yes he had injuries but even when he was healthy he was terrible at getting separation and running routes. His best trait was going after jump balls. That is it.
To me, the term bust refers to a player who's talent or mental toughness didn't measure up at the next level. Players whose careers ruined by injury are not busts. I watched him play. His routes and separation were just fine. He was never the first option by Bear QBs. The injuries are 90% of why he failed. It would be understandable if he lost some swagger or became cautious after so many bad breaks.

It all started at the BEGINNING, (of his career.) When the video got to, 7:12, it said, "IN THE OFFSEASON," he had a, "small injury," in his leg. That was before his first game in the NFL. The offseason means that the team, or coaches did not see the injury, like it was a tremendous hit put on him, while running with the ball, in a game. You can fake any kind of injury when you are at home. I ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT KEVIN WHITE WAS FAKING, FOR THE MONEY. Especially when he MISSED HIS WHOLE ROOKIE SEASON (of ALL seasons,) with this, "small injury." Immediately, after he was ruled out for that season, it was, "I DON'T WANT TO PLAY," as far as I am concerned. How many NFLers, ( or NFL players) have missed their ENTIRE ROOKIE SEASON, and then gone on to a career that was prominent?- END 😂OF STORY.
