      Yes
      Its my friends tent and he'd never pitched before so he did it the way you see it BUT imo it's wrong this way and as I point out in video I'd pitch it narrow side to wind with that long line from top of pole into the wind. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and commenting

      Foot to wind you mean ? I can't see how wind striking it directly at the back is a good idea ?

      @@TonyHobbs parallel = wind should be same direction as ridgeline i.e. the wind striking the corner of one of the poles, along the seam from the corner stake (and ridgeline).

    • @TonyHobbs
      @TonyHobbs  Před 10 měsíci

      Cheers yes as I said where feet are . Hit it by feet along the ridge line. The problem is the wind can and does move. Hitting it broadside would not be good. Its really a tent for reasonably sheltered spots. I hope to borrow it again from my friend and use it more and do more comparison videos etc. Fingers crossed 🤞

    Hi Tony,
    great video, the top tip that I have discovered on CZcams (No, I can't. Take credit) is to make sure that the base is entirely square I.E. it is not rhombus,
    In order to do this peg out the short side, go around to the other short side. Grab both corners and bring them together and pull tight. This will find the centre point of the other short side. If you peg this centrally and then pull out from either side off that point 😂that creates a perfect square and will remove all wrinkles from the fly sheet.
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers, Matt

    • @TonyHobbs
      @TonyHobbs  Před rokem

      Yes I heard that and yes a square or rectangle needed like all these types as I often say myself lol the problem with that plan is getting the first two exactly straight if they out then other end will be out. On tough ground not lawn getting first two straight by eye easier than rough ground. I'd suggest pegging out and looking at it by eye vs this new fangled thing 😉 😆 the other thing is when you tighten the lines that will to a degree get it into correct shape. Remember you could have rectangle but then pull one corner too much or not enough once it's erect too so probably better to work around it make sure it's correct shape. So in principle it's nice idea but flawed as the shape could be wrong at start if first two pegs not 90 degrees and as tightened up esp on uneven ground the shape needs monitoring. Pretty easy to keep this rectangular. I'm hoping my friend let's me borrow this again one day. Take care and thanks for watching 👀

    • @VapourTrailz
      @VapourTrailz Před rokem +2

      @@TonyHobbs yeah by that i mean, if you pull from the opposite short end. You create a triangle. If you pin the centre of that triangle and then pull out from that tip you will create a perfect rectangle. I'd love to link the video showing this, but I've no idea where it is. Sorry!.

      I used Scarp 1 on a very recent trip to Wales imo it's a more liveable environment than x mid but heavier. If you can save weight on other bits and can pack scarp I'd take that of the two. I'm really not a big fan of x mid. I have two other vids on it plus more more to follow from this trip plus when in the Scarp I show us around it and will edit in x mid for a Scarp x mid video. But if weight an issue take x mid its perfectly nice if you get on with it esp as light
      Save more weight ĺeave inner behind just have a good bath tub groundsheet

    • @TonyHobbs

      Which do you prefer ? What are you thinking to take

    • @trytheoutdoors
      @trytheoutdoors Před rokem +1

      I agree with you.
      My x mid ripped in fairly high winds a few weeks ago. The flysheet outer fabric ripped where the pole tip goes into the grommet on the strip of webbing which in turn presses against the flysheet. May be I pitched it badly????
      But I do love the lightness, spaciousness and ease of pitch of the x mid.
      But the scarp 1 offers invaluable living space and is able to cope with very wet and windy weather which offers peace of mind. I've just wild camped in Snowdonia and - inevitably- it was cold and very wet. The living space of my tarp tent was a life saver. The weight penalty of the tarp tent ( at 1.4 kg it is 500 g heavier than the x mid???) is worth paying in order to be able to spread out and to begin trying to dry out....or at least change easily into one's 'sacred' dry sleep clothes stored in the trusty dry bag.
      On multiple day hikes, for me living space is vital - especially in the long dark nights. This means I need a 2p tent. The scarp 1 is a 1.5 tent and does offer that space.
      One dreams of a 4 season, soacious tent at 1kg...but I don't think it exists. Or does it? The x mid, although strong, is not a 4 season tent but does tick many other boxes.
      Love your tip about using the tarp tent pegs for the x mid 😀

      @TonyHobbs  Před 10 měsíci

      What about the two side tie out points you never use those? I hope to borrow it from my friend again later in the month for an extended time to get another look and use it more. If you only carry 8 you can't use side ties. Not needed? They probably on bungee so less sturdy anyway amd most mids with side ties are either not really needed or more for support vs actual rigidity.
      Yes maybe its a bit over kill but I explain things so new people if interested get a few thoughts and ideas and we can't always pitch on bowling green often it's uneven bumpy ground so this helps deal with that. What is the highest winds you been in it? I am sure its fine enough to 25-30mph it'll be very uncomfortable much over that but again most will be. Thanks for watching

      Finally watched lol or just skip that step and peg out third corner by eye lol
      It pitched well on flat grassy lawn but do it on rougher camping terrain not so easy

      @@TonyHobbs I'll give you that it is harder in the wild than the lawn but it's still a clueless pitch fella

    The mere length of this video indicates that this is over complicating a simple thing, I’m sorry but there are way better methods. Pitching it right takes less than 2 minutes usually.

      Hello
      Did you even watch the video and what part are you concerned about? Maybe where most others pitch theirs on their lawns and show off putting pole in position easily? Maybe pitch it on rough lumpy ground where a tweek here or there might be needed to get it just right? Maybe some enjoy adjusting things to taste? Plus if you watch it (?)you’ll see why I suggest or think something or other? What do you specifically disagree with and do you own one? I'm hoping to borrow it again for another camp out so will give it more thoughts moving forward. Thanks for popping by and supporting channel.
