ILYUSHIN IL62 LANDING with OPEN REVERSERS 5 SECONDS BEFORE TOUCHDOWN + IL62 DEPARTURE (4K)

  • This Iluyshin IL62 Freighter arrived at Liege Airport last saturday in the evening hours. This classic russian airplane arrived at the belgian airport to operate a cargo charter flight to africa the next day. The Ilyushin opened its reversers 5 seconds before touchdown which is a normal procedure of this classic airplane. I have seen about seven IL62 landings within the past 15 years and all of the opened the reversers long before touchdown but this time I was finally able to catch it on video.
In the evening hours their were some rumous the Ilyushin would depart again 2 hours after the touchdown but after seeing the crew leave the plane we knew it wouldn` t happen. It was quite hard to get some information about a departure time but luckily a Air Bridge Cargo logistics worker told us the crew of the Il62 was sitting in the restaurant of the hotel. We walked in and just asked the pilots of the Ilyushin if they could tell us a departure time. They told us they would leave in the early morning hours on sunday. Best regards to the friendly crew, I hope you had a pleasent flight to Africa.
Thanks for watching, new videos every tuesday and friday.

Thanks Cargospotter. Not sure why any of your videos get a thumbs down. People don't know the work and logistics to make these videos for us to enjoy. Not many transport jets are certified to use reverse thrust in flight. I used to do it on the DC-8 occasionally.

Lord! I remember taking these from New York to Prague in the 1960s. As soon as the plane took off, the flight attendants distributed big glass mugs. Then they re-filled them with Pilsner Urquell throughout the flight. As long as you could lift your mug, they would fill it. That - plus the opaque fug of cheap Czech cigarettes. These were Flights from Hell, but now they make bittersweet memories of youth.

"OPEN REVERSERS 5 SECONDS BEFORE TOUCHDOWN" Totally standard to go "Full-Reverse-Thrust" - "during the flare" on pretty much all rear-engined aircraft of the period. Think; doing a south-bound decents into > Genoa-Turin-Venice-Milan having just crossed the Alps meant the cabin crew had to clear the cabin, and on advise to the captain; he would go "Full Dumps+ Full-Flaps+Full-Reverse, and do his best to drop like a stone. NASA sent people to the UK to experience this on commercial airliners (Hawker Siddeley-Tridents) when they were exploring adding reverse thrust to the Shuttle. It made decent planning a non-issue.............

Amazing these very loud and smoky machines are still allowed in European skies. Granted these magnificent Soviet era anachronisms are like flying museum, but I sympathize with my fellow Belgian citizens living in the vicinity of Liege Airport enduring the noise that only an aviation enthusiast can appreciate. Noticed these soviet planes have neutral (in this case) or negative dihedral (anhedral)? Very manœuvrable but impossible to fly without active yaw damper. And I counted ... 18 Windows pieces on the windshield (B787 has... 4!). Definitively a dinosaur.
