When my great grandmother passed away, her body was kept in the morgue for a year, bcuz the family was planning a grand funeral and also bcuz she was also a Queenmother of the Traditional Area

Hi, I'm an Asante. Until Covid, corpse were kept in the morgue for months or a year based on the funeral planning process. But after COVID-19, they're kept a little shorter (within 5months). Also, every clan has a funeral opening dates where specific dates are announced for funerals for families of the dead to choose which one will fit their planning process. This is done to avoid funerals from clashing with any of the Asanteman durbars such Akwasidae or to prevent funerals from being conducted every weekend.
    2. The idea of the professional wailers/cryers may be misunderstood, but, just watching the video and the planning is stressful, so a lot of people are not able to even grieve properly due to financial stress and funeral organisation and all that, so finding someone to cry for you is an option then you cry later when everything is calm after the funeral and reality hits you. Mind you, the utterances they make when they cry sometimes draw your memories of that loved one and ignite your emotions.

So funeral in Ghana is in stages. Usually burial is within 2-6 months.
    First one week celebration.
Then forty days ( Ashanti culture)
Then funeral ( which is typically 3 days, burial/ wake day usually Thursday or Friday)Then Saturday is funeral day with Sunday as thanksgiving day.
    And 1st anniversary celebration.

The body can sometimes stay in the mogue for about 2 to 3 months. The essence is sometimes to allow majority of persons who know the deseased to hear of the demise, and come show their final respect.
Others are also to mobilise resources to give a befitting burial, especially the elderly who have made great impact in the lives of people
My mom, a fanti, passed on in December and was buried in February

Funerals happen on whatever date the family agree. That means it can be 1 month, it can be as long as a year. I've been to a funeral which was as much as 7 years later because the man was a chief and there were other issues to deal with. The body was in the morgue that whole time and I walked past the body at that 7 year funeral.
But also just to be clear, we have a 7 day ceremony, and then 40 days event as well.

Keeping the body for long or short periods depend on the kind of person. For instance if is a kid or a younger person, the body can be kept for 3 days to 2weeks but if is an adult or older person, the body can be kept for for 40days or 2months. And if the person is a king or queen that one is after 3 months or more. And even if u are an adult and u are the first child of ur parents to be dead and ur parents are still alive that one is after a week or two. So it depends on the type of person.

The crying is part of the culture. For the Ashanti culture we believe if a lot of people do cry at the funeral then it means the deceased loved people and treated them good. The more people cry and sad at the funeral the more people get to know him or her when he or she was alive and that’s why they go all out to go get people to come cry at the funeral

One this is not every funeral is planned the way you see in this video, some would cost as low as $500 to be done. The video you're reacting is a rich person's funeral
Funerals are arranged based on the family's plans, it could be a month or done with specific time of their choice. Billboard are raised and pulled down just days afterwards. Funeral service is just one and the rest depends on the family whether to extend with games or donations activities or raise an foundation on their beloved person.
