Go-Go's - We Got The Beat (from "Urgh! A Music")
The pre-fame, punk rock Go-Go's are filmed performing "We Got The Beat" in August 1980 at the Whisky A Go-Go in West Hollywood, CA.
From the film "Urgh! A Music War". - Hudba
Who ever mixed the sound for this show did a real good job
I agree 100%. It has so much energy. You wish you were there.
The bass is so much stronger and better here than on the album. Although that wasn't Kathy Valentine's fault necessarily. She was probably told to 'scale it back' a little since they were going for more of a 'pop' sound.
A 24 track remote studio in a truck recorded it (and all the bands that night).
@@tonycreednow Yeah, I was gonna say, that sounds liek something that was given a proper mix after the fact, not the work of the front-of-house sound guy on the night.
@@tonycreednow All those bands in URGH! sound killer, regardless of the location or whether or not they were bands I even liked. Miles Copeland spared no expense at getting top notch mixes out of these performances. I know a few people who were at the Santa Monica Civic for Chelsea, DK’s, X, and (I think) Wall Of Voodoo and Magazine… and they said that the mobile studio (probably the same one used to record the bands at the Whisky) was pretty cutting edge for the time.
Whatever anyone’s opinion of Miles Copeland or IRS Records is, there’s no denying that he knew how to get results.
A few years ago, it finally dawned on me; The Go-Go's were freakin awesome and absolutely stand the test of time. Well done ladies.
Even if it took you a couple of years, the most important thing is that it did finally dawn on you. Good man yourself.
URGH! changed my life.
That bassline really slaps.
That’s because Margot was a badass. When they fired her they lost their edge.
I don't care what anybody says, she looks f hot with the short blond hair, gogos and Belinda kicked ass
One month after this show was filmed, I met Kathy Valentine in the "Green" room after her set with The Textones who were opening for Gary Myrick. I was just 21 and I don't recall any mention of Kathy playing with the Go-Gos. I did a little impromptu interview and I asked what The Textones had coming up to which she replied: "We're playing in Arizona next month." And I asked her somewhat jokingly "So, what do you do with your first MILLION? She looked right at me and said "I'd like to have a new car. I've never had a new car before." In just a matter 2-3 months later I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I thought at the time that the signed Textones flier would be the last I ever saw of Ms. Valentine when-BOOM! The Go-Gos debut LP in the display case of our Mall record store. For years I showed off my Kathy Valentine autographed flier from the Textones show in September 1980 that she signed: "With Kathy, from love." Sadly, one day the flier couldn't be found. Talk about GRACIOUS! It was me and my friend roaming the Whiskey like we OWNED the place and we landed in the band "Green Room" due to its having an unguarded open door. We weren't even sure when the Textones set was ending so imagine our surprise when they wandered in from the stage. My friend and I had a demeanor that made everyone think that wherever we were-we were SUPPOSED to be there. Kathy and one of the guy members I don't remember which one were receptive to our presence and we stood around and "schmoozed" for awhile. I do remember that Carla O. was not in the room at the time. My friend bought a "Gary Myrick & The Figures"t-shirt. There were no Textones t-shirts that night. Now 40 years later I look back and I see this "Green Room" in my mind and think how I was talking to someone who neither one of us had any idea of what a heart-stopping ride she was about to get on. Now, either she had already joined the Go-Gos but thought it inappropriate to mention "another band" or her going over to them was not a done deal in late September 1980. The only other part of our conversation I can recall is when I mentioned that my friend and I live in NC and we're driving back in a few days and we're stopping to see my friend's sister in Austin, when Kathy's eyes got big and she says "Yeah, Austin! That's where I'm from! Carla, too!"
Great story! I love that Kathy's a Texan. She still lives in Austin I believe.
I'm writing a screenplay about the trip to LA that my friend and I went on, our mission was to pick up his sister's car at Long Beach Pier and drive it back to NC. Aside from meeting Kathy V. we had many incredible experiences not just in LA but on the drive back East via Las Vegas, Pueblo, CO, Amarillo, Lubbock, Austin (where his other sister lived), Dallas, where we happened upon "The Cars" in concert at Reunion Arena w/ The Motels. I don't want to put out any "spoilers" but I definitely plan on including meeting Kathy V. in the script, along with pedestrians along Santa Monica Blvd swarming cars in traffic in search of tickets for "MONTY PYTHON"-Hollywood Bowl. Hopefully coming to a theater near YOU!
She was asked by Charlotte on Christmas 1980 in the bathroom of The Whisky (At an X show) if she could play bass. She lied and said yes. The Go-Go's had 8 sold out shows for NYE/NY week and Kathy learned how to play bass and their set list in a few days. So when you saw her a few mos before she was not in the Go-Go's yet. It's all in her book and their doc. Thanks for sharing your story. :)
@@beatnikdede Thanks for letting me know about Kathy V.'s joining the Go-Go's. I was thrilled for her when I saw she had been recruited. They must have really liked her alot to hire her as a bass player when she didn't play bass. I found her to be warm and modest, 2 qualities that are somewhat uncommon in that "racket". It's fascinating to meet someone before they're soaring to stardom.
Such a great performance. And Larry from perfect strangers pushing the dude off the stage is an added bonus.
Yeah, Mark Lynn Baker. I can see that. But if they don't want audience members running onto the stage, then Ginger, their manager shouldn't set such bad example 1:54
@@stephaniegormley9982 So that was Ginger? I always wondered who the hell that was stinking up the ending of an otherwise awesome performance. At least the guy who got chased off the stage was funny. Ginger was just… I don’t even know what to say.
GOD i miss those days, you never realize what you have until it's gone...bummer
I dunno. I kind of knew those were special times even when I was right in the thick of it. You could just feel the magic in the air back then. Everything felt new and exciting… and different and a real break from the past. At least it did to me. I just knew it was a special time and I didn’t want to miss a second of it. I packed a *LOT* of living into the first couple of years of the 80’s… and then it all ended too soon. From ‘83-forward things got a lot less interesting and a lot more predictable.
1980. Two full years before it became a #1 hit!
Belinda with the great 80's dance moves.
She’s channeling 60’s dance moves.
The beautiful and interesting Go-Gos...before the big labels airbrushed all their coolness away. Totally under-rated band.
search for the original version of this song. its better than this version.
@@megamilyon6111 online research suggests that this song was written by Charlotte Caffrey, guitarist for Go-Gos. Is there an original version just by her or something?
@@Mardocius the go go's recorded a version before they were signed to the record label. you can find it on youtube
@@megamilyon6111 Are you talking about the Stiff single from 1980? If you are, it sounds almost identical to this. I can’t think of any other earlier versions of We Got The Beat. That has to be the one you’re referring to.
@@Shikta-poobah67 I will try to find the link. Its a little slower and less polished, less produced
Jane has been my crush for 40+ years!
This was from 1980, from the film Urgh, The Music War. This was way before Beauty and the Beat, when they were playing clubs like the now defunct Starwood. Kathy joined New Year's eve that year. And the rest, is girl power history.
They weren’t just playing around the local L.A. club circuit at this time. Shortly after this was filmed they went on a brief tour of the UK with Madness, where they befriended many in the then-thriving 2-tone Ska scene, including the Specials… where Jane and the late, great Terry Hall started their brief romance, culminating in the song they wrote together, “Our Lips Are Sealed”.
Go-Go's AND Oingo Boingo? Two extremely underrated bands.
Gogos, oingo boingo, surf punks and alleycats. Oh, man, what a marquee.
It was indeed quite a time!
That girl crowdsurfing has a Selector shirt on. Awesome.
I wonder if she still crowd surfs now a days. Lol
yeah and every boy grabs under her shirt. horrifying to see
Surfpunk was really cool in LA in the early 80s
2024 Still the best. Their must is timeless.
Can you imagine how Beauty and the Beat would have sounded with this kind of edge. It would’ve been fucking awesome!
I fucking agree! That's MY favorite, perfect version for their signature song.
I downloaded this audio and recorded it in CD.
Yep. If only they’d kept Margot.
@@Shikta-poobah67 Margo didn’t want to stick around. She saw where their sound was heading and she wasn’t having it.
@@jeffharder8706 I wondered why she left. She looks like a dark horse.
@@jeffharder8706 Actually she very much *DID* want to stick around. She was fired, and for bullshit reasons too. She wasn’t too pleased about it. According to Belinda she tried like hell to get back in, but Ginger was the one who “wasn’t having it”. Though it’s true that Margot wasn’t happy with the full-on pop direction they were going in, she still loved being a Go-Go and since she was a founding member of the band, there was a lot at stake and being fired wasn’t exactly something she took lightly.
the beginning of something beautiful....the gogos.
How Fecking Awesome!!!!!! The Go's-Go's....Wish I was there...
Belinda is fire and brings some 60’s shimmy into the punk rock vibe. She’s a true Leo.
Yes. She's so beautiful and talented and has great stage pressence like Madonna another true Leo

@@wonderwinder1 You are on a hair trigger. Maybe take your meds every day and dont skip.
That was me running on stage. 😆
Yup
I bet Belinda thought you were cute. She didn't seem to mind you being there.
That part always cracks me up. That little move you made as the dude chases you off the stage 🤣
I watch this and think of that horrible call Ginger had to make to tell Margot she was fired and out of the band. In Belinda's book she says Margot begged and pleaded not to be kicked out of the band. It's sad knowing how far she got with the band and she gets kicked out but if one band member is not on the same level and same path as the rest of the band, it can ruin it for everyone in the band. They had to make a tough decision. It brought in another great musician, Kathy and the rest was history.
I hope Margot life turned out well for her. It was nice seeing her in the new documentary and how well she looks. She has aged very well. I thought she looked great in the documentary. Good for Margot!!! God Bless All the Go-Go's!!!
I dunno. I think they could have worked it out without having to fire her. They wouldn’t have been the first band to have members having “creative differences”. That kind of tension can be channeled into making great music. It has worked for a great many bands. I mean I’m glad that they finally settled their differences after 40+ years, but at the time it was pretty messed up. Margot was a founding member. To be fired from a band you helped start just as you’re on the cusp of massive success has got to be pretty damn traumatic.
One of the best songs by a girl group ever. Must also praise, Our Lips Are Sealed
Those 2 singles are as good as any two legendary singles ever released. They’re perfect.
Belinda's memoir brought me here. Good read.
margot olavarria in the bass
THE 80S WERE THE BEST
wow! Crowdsurfing in the late 70's. COOL!
1980. Close.
Margot Olavarria in the bass...
I met her
Margot Olavarria, orginal Bass Player in this video.
They Rock!!!
Her hair puts me in a trance......along with the way she loves to dance. You know who.
I believe this is the only performance which includes original Go~Go's Bass Player "Margot Olavarria"!
You mean the only filmed performance? Margot played on the first single (the Stiff Records version of “We Got The Beat” b/w “How Much More” - 1980), and she’s also on the ‘79 demo and a few various recordings compiled for the “Valley Of The Go-Go’s” album.
chickies are rock-n-steady.....just a good song all around....poppy but still has that surfer punk bass line, jammin'
i never got in to them but the drummer liveed next store to me when i was about 15yr,s old
This is a great song and the weight thing should be let GO. Cancer can make you look thin too and I don't know how many people are willing to take it that far but is that what is important?...anyway this is a great performance, the spirit of the song, the spirit of the thing and to put any emphasis on how someone looks (and I think the fact she looks like a normal girl ADDS to the spirit of the song) in a derogatory manner is just simple minded. I wonder how fit/thin/attractive the people making these OBSERVATIONS are.
Belinda looks great here. Hot af. People are lame. Probably a bunch of pedos who think women have to have bodies like a 12 year old boy in order to be attractive. Most of ‘em are closeted and full of issues.
Margot was so punk. Too bad it didn't work out. She looked great with the band. (Not dissing Kathy Valentine at all!)
Kathy lives right here in my hometown of Austin. She is EPIC!!!
Margot was the best.
Now that's the Belinda I remember seeing at the Roxy. Red dress and on the chuby side.
THIS is music!
Honestly, music does not get better than this.
It’s great music, yes… but let’s not get carried away.
They seemed so damn cool here
They were indeed very cool at this time, when Margot was still with them and they still had a bit of their punk edge intact. I personally think this was when they were at their peak, musically speaking. I bear no ill will towards Kathy V, but the way Margot’s firing was handled was pretty messed up, and though Beauty And The Beat is a great album, there’s definitely something missing without Margot’s presence.
They rock!!!
Such coolness..saw them open for the Police in 81. love the early logo on the drums. these were special times. Urgh! #1
Those were indeed special times. The whole time period of 1977 through 1983 was an explosion of creativity like no other in modern history. I count my lucky stars every day that I got to experience the 2nd half of it firsthand. I started getting into the scene in the summer of 1980, right about the time this gig took place, and at that time it was just off the chain. It was like getting sucked into a vortex of excitement. The first 2 and a half years of the 80’s were a time like no other. I could write a really thick book about my experiences from back then.
The chubby version of Belinda Carlisle has always been my favorite. She's so cute here.
The only wrong thing in her look is the very short hair. The rest is PERFECT.

Antológica. Assim é a performance das Go-Go’s no palco apresentando a canção-assinatura-hino new wave “We Got The Beat” no filme Urgh!

What a fuckin' great band they were!
Before the record company gets a hold of you and changes everything.
I dunno man. They had aspirations and ambitions. I think they knew exactly what they were getting into. Too bad Margot wound up as collateral damage.
Well, they got a lifelong career out of it. Pretty good deal, I would think.
God they look great
omg she was soo cute ..still is hot but now more hollywood than cute

Oh man can you compare the 80s and now?
As it turned out, they did in fact have "the beat."
If they didn't it wouldn't be a good song
I very much like the fact that despite the fact they were some nice girls, they played Pure Punk Rock.....
Hey James Duke, Hey Astrid look it's Mama!
She was so beautiful though ♡

I like how she says ‘pool’. It’s how I imagine you’d pronounce ‘cool’ when you spelled it ‘kewl’ in grade six.
Margot!!!
Belinda is an absolute *twin* of my wife Kelly. Eerily so.
The Go Go's right before the transformation (love Jane!). What a bill! Well the Surf Punks are lame. oingo Boingo have their moments. But the Alley Cats were great and severely underated!
The Surf Punks were just comedy. They were pretty dumb compared to the actual punk bands at the time, but they were entertaining in a cheap way. I always thought it was kind of amusing that one of them was the brother of the Captain from Captain & Tennille. However yeah, they didn’t really fit on this bill.
The people jumping on stage is scary stuff, especially the dude reaching into his pants.
That was a joke. I know people who knew that guy. He was being a goof. Those were different times.
So strange to see this strange space between the 70's and 80's. The crowd looks really 70's.
Their early stuff was so great... punk mixes! this is just California pop music.
Belinda is the most beautiful woman on the planet! Ahhh early go go's :-)
Belinda was beautiful in the 80s, but thats 30 years ago. She looked her best in her 87/88 album Heaven on earth.

Belinda stays solid through the years! But ...do the song Automatic..its a fav of mine. But when i say that, I can think of 20 other songs. Play well Go-Go's!
Like The Bangles, I think The Go-Gos were more authentic before they got signed to major labels. Both bands had a lot of short haircuts and genuinely cared more about rocking than being eye candy before joining major labels.
SHE IS ALWAYS HOT!! FROM MY DECADE-THE ‘80’S!!!!

this was before Kathy Valentine joined the band?
Yep. Margot Olivarria was the original bass player. She was bounced because she had problems making rehearsals and disagreed with the direction the band was going..from punk to pop.
@@wcatholic1 I think that’s a bit of an oversimplification. There was more to it than just a few missed rehearsals and some creative differences over the band’s direction. I think what a lot of it really boiled down to was that Ginger just really didn’t like Margot. There was a major power struggle between them. Much has been said over the years about how Margot supposedly wanted the Go-Go’s to remain a pure punk band and be more like X or whatever, but the truth is that she just wanted keep the punk edge, as they’re doing in this footage. She was embracing the more commercial sound just as much as the others, but she just couldn’t get along with Ginger.
@@Shikta-poobah67 I wonder if Ginger did a "She goes or I go" routine.
@@wcatholic1 From what I understand (I wasn’t actually there, but I know a couple of people who were), that’s basically exactly what it was, or at least what it boiled down to. From what I’ve been told, Ginger had giant dollar signs in her eyes at the time, and was willing to do whatever it took and step on anybody’s face if it meant getting the big bucks… even if it meant chopping original band members out of the equation. Margot was collateral damage. It wasn’t that she didn’t want success, it was just that she didn’t want to have to sell her soul to get it. The others were a bit more, shall we say… compliant.
Belinda, “former” the Germs
