- I wasn't looking for another Land Rover, then suddenly I was. But the short wheel base is my favorite and I miss not owning one. And then all of a sudden I had bought one. And then it arrived. And this is what I got. Its a 1971 Land Rover Series 2A 88" manufactured in South Africa. I thought it was a real collectors vehicle but then I found all the rust. But I also found a whole lot more that made me think just maybe this is a collectors vehicle. 100% clean registration with 3 owners, completely standard including all its original ownership books. It drives well but is at the point where it needs to be rebuilt before it deteriorates more. But the best reason of all is .....

Hey Alan
They look great together, and they are lucky to have you as their owner. Someone who appreciates and respects their heritage.
I'm looking forward to the next stage of their lives.
Thanks for the video.
Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for all the comments
I own a 1963 Series 11A 88/Short Wheelbase hard top commercial wit 9 previous owners. I also learned to drive in Early series 2 land rovers and think they are simply the best vehicles Land Rover ever made. You are very lucky to live in a dry climate, in UK with Salt on the roads many old vehicles succumb to serious corrosion issues, much much worse than you have shown. The 2.25 Petrol engine really is a peach, a bit thirsty by modern standards but very smooth with a wide powerband and will still run quite well even when very worn out. I have rebored mone +20 thou, gas flowed, fitted hardened valve seats for unleaded petrol and skimmed the standard 8:1 head to 9:1 which improves the efficiency a little without stressing anything. I like Defenders but if I had to choose it would be a Series 2/2A short wheelbase every time.
Well said , couldn’t agree more.
Great Video Alan. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it Dean. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Nice 88 inch but you have got your work cut out. I know however you will do a great job so well done on finding it.
It is a bit more work than I had planned but still a lot less than this 107 😅
That's awesome. I really miss my S3 Swb.
One of a kind
Awesome I owned a 2a as my 1st ever vehicle and had it for 9 happy years 🏴
What a first vehicle to own, they are lovely vehicles. I hope there have been more since then
@@TheOverlandLegend yes I had series 3 lwb and a series 3 lightweight and my last was a defender 300 tdi. I loved my series 3 lwb the most. I’m hoping for another land rover soon maybe a 110 ex MOD 🤞
Great to hear thanks for sharing
I have a 1971 2a shortwheel base pick up had it for 23 years used for shooting logging and deer control. Cost 400 UK pounds no. MOT or road tax insurance 104. Pounds from Adrian flux 💥
What a story thanks for sharing
Love the metal dash and short wheel base is hands down the best looking, any longer variation takes away that charm as far as looks goes.
Agree 100%
@@TheOverlandLegend kudus to you for slowly restoring the rover, it’s love and dedication to do that, lot of hard work goes in. The result will be a lifetime of enjoying driving the landy!
Thanks appreciate the support
I've got a series 3 with the safari roof 1973, love it too bits
That’s sounds fantastic, awesome vehicles. Thanks for watching and commenting
Such great car the Land Rover 👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧
It’s the best I think 😀
The LWB looks like a 1 tonne. Be a gem if it is. 👍
Not quite we didn’t really get the 1-ton in SA but it does have the bigger brakes so it can take a load
I've had a few, a series 3 109" safari station wagon 6 cylinder sidevalve, then an 88"series2A ex signals landy with 2,5 chev engine ( not recommended at all), and a Defender 110 county station wagon td5. The 88" was huge fun but the conversion was unreliable. If I knew then what I know now I would have reverted to a landy 200 or 300 tdi or a 2.5 cylinder Landrover 4 cylinder from the Botswana Defence Force. The later is a bulet proof combination with a seies 3 gearbox and Salisbury diff with hyperbolic spring sets. That little buger wa punishing to drive on bad roads...
By all accounts that 2.5 l engine is a perfect match. Mixing and matching Landy parts can deliver the best vehicle of all. A good old Defender 90 is right up there as the best all rounder for me.
Great old bus, in fact a great looking pair of landies.
I've owned dozens of series Landrovers all my life & will always believe they only ever look at their best & most at home in any African environment.
I don't know the price of petrol where you are my friend, but that big 6 must seriously lighten your wallet. Lol!
You bet that 2.6l is thirsty especially by today’s standards. It is amazing driving them out here, such great places to go to. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Checked your video again, four months later, 😂😂😂
Very special little truck..
Mine is a 1960 Series2 SWB.
When you mentioned the original jack and handle, I could only think how weird the British were...
If they designed the jack swivel point so that the crank handle could fit both the jack and the pulley, you would only need one handle 😂.
My S2a and 101 V8 has the same jacks and accessories...
Crazy.
1. Jack.
2. Long rod with square end, other end round hole for handle.
3. Wooden handle.
4. Wheel spanner.
5. Crankhandle.
And adding to the 101 kit, same, with trenching tools.
6. Spade.
7. Pickaxe
8 Pickaxe handle...
Did you get the original wooden push thought handle with yours ?
If not, I've got an extra one for you.... 👊🏻✌🏻👍🏻
I’ll have to check, I don’t remember seeing a wooden handle 😯. I’m itching to look at that SWB properly but have to get this 107 finished first
Very nice Landy, Alan..
Lucky to have found it before me in my turf 😂😂.
Hope you will only remove the rust, but keep some of the patina, instead of dressing it up like " Mutton as Lamb"
Quite a colour scheme there.
Red, blue and finally green...
Love it, enjoy it...
Think the S2a's where some of the nicer Series Landies, love the Maltese Cross grill, metal dash, upgraded gearbox, compared to my S2 88"....but love my lights on the radiator cover 🤔🤔
Enjoy enjoy enjoy...
Remember, there is still Miss Eva, my 1957 S1 107 Station Wagon looking for a new home... Regards from Hermanus 👊🏻✌🏻👍🏻
Thanks Alwyn it was a great find. It will be a while before anything gets done as I need to finish the 107 first
@@TheOverlandLegend
My 107 is mothballed, not sure that I will ever see it again. 😔😔😔
Good luck with your projects...
👊🏻✌🏻👍🏻

A Noble beast from 🏴
Exactly right
Too Lekker Boetie..
Cheers from Zim..
Cheers man thanks for watching
@The Overland Legend Only a Pleasure.. I have a Series 2 1959 SWB and granted spend more time under her than in her, but have so much fun.. They are just the best ever Boet 👌 👍
Interesting over there they have a bench seat and in Australia its three individual seats
This is true. All the civilian models had bench seats but the military versions had individual seats. Thanks for watching and commenting
Fine vehicle. But, the music drowns your voice.
Thanks for watching and thanks for the feedback
If you had known about the rust would that have made a difference whether you purchased it or not?
No I still would have bought but I could have negotiated the price down to allow for repair costs
@@TheOverlandLegend Me too! I’m a sucker for these amazing machines!
Very happy with the purchase and keen to get it back to its former glory
Just bite the bullet new bulkhead and chassis repairs not worth it richards chassis the best keep springs original blasted as gresed they work fine rusted there one seized spring
Thanks for the tips. I’m looking forward to getting this one fixed up. Thanks for watching and commenting
Series 2 has the strongest aluminum body while series 1 has the lightest body with the 1.6 Litre -not as thirsty- gas engine. I wish there were hybrid or factory LPG 3/5 door Series Land Rovers today. Nowadays you have electronic junk as jeep demanding money like a bottomless pit. If you don't have to drive to work, restore a 3 door Series 88, avoid the electronic junk. 🛻🤍
Agree I like your thinking, thanks for watching and commenting
