    • @muskokamike127
      @muskokamike127 Před 6 lety +23

      The problem with poison it doesn't just kill the rat. It enters the food chain. So a bird eats a rat that has the poison. The bird dies. Then an animal eats the carcass of the bird, say a fox or a coyote. Then they die. Then so on and so on up the food chain until something WE eat has the poison in it. So the fox dies in a field and the poison leeches into the ground. A cow comes along and eats the grass and voila, poison beef or if it's a dairy cow, poison in milk. It might be only a small trace amount but that's how it works. The more we eat that has toxins in it the more diseases WE have.....

      No, it just offloads the responsibility for broken necks and painfully squirming still-concious rodents onto other animals. Rather than picking them up by the tail, you need to be putting the rats out of their misery, stat.

      @@forevertj You are wrong on a few points. Fleas only bite humans (vector transmission) after there prefered host has already died, only rarely from plague (most animals are only mildly affected by plague in most cases), plague may also be transmitted through direct contact ( bites from infected animal or handling guts) or through inhalation of the bacteria (cough). Fleas do not carry plague long-term, the coccobacillus builds up in there midgut, effectivly blocking there stomach, causing the fleas to bite more aggressivly and infect the new host before they starve. Multiple animals can be infected with the plague bacteria (Yersinia pestis), however most rats are immune, the only genus of rat susceptible to plague is Neotoma, other animals that carry plague are voles, deer mice, chipmunks, squirrels, rabbits, dogs, cats, goats, camels and sheep. Neotoma at best make up about 10% of rats, leaving 90% of rats that do not carry plague.

    It is so good to see ecological rat control coming back. In India the rats have been poisoned so often that they have become toxic to their predators and immune to the poison. Using the methods that Nature gave us is so much more sensible. Your Lurcher is magnificent...my favourite breed of dog, even if they are incorrigible thieves. Your mink are well trained obviously, and really demonstrate the speed and skills of their species. I kept an old Toronto 3 story building rat and mouse clear with ferrets a number of years ago, and beat the cockroaches with Geophilidae...never needed poisons in 25 years, and it was pretty infested when we bought it. Good job, thanks for doing it right and inspiring others as well.🖤🇨🇦

    • @tamarrajames3590
      @tamarrajames3590 Před 5 lety +2

      Sida Zeng I actually do nothing to control them, once they are seeded into a building you never see them unless another type of insect is appearing. Their numbers will grow to accommodate the infestation, and then diminish all on their own. This was a large three story building with a basement built in the 1800s of brick and wood, and roaches are pretty endemic in old Toronto. They had reduced a really bad infestation to the point that I never saw another roach again in less than a month. The ferret actually got a bit chubby initially, and we borrowed a couple from friends to help him out. They had the mouse issue under control within a couple of months. We arranged a “home station” where their water and sleeping area was, so they returned there regularly. I found the whole process fascinating, as I had never tried this sort of thing before. I captured a few of my little Viking ships...my pet name for the geophilidae and took them to my home just to make sure I had a colony there to handle the occasional incursion by ants...it too is a very old building, Arts and Crafts era brick, plaster and lathe. Every now and again I will see one in the Spring when a few ants give it a try, but that is the only way I know they are still here.
