  • In 1936, Ruth Harkness - a dressmaker from New York -- set off to China in search of the rare, elusive Giant Panda. Her goal? Bring one back alive to share the wonder of China's wildlife with the western world. She became the first explorer to do so, and so set in motion a public fascination with these creatures that continues 80 years later.

    In many ways I think of Pandas like the British Royal family. It's very easy to explain why they're a waste of money to keep well preserved in high cost environments, but they do bring in a lot of tourist dollars and have ancillary benefits.

    that was one looong continuous shot at the beginning. impressive.
    I once saw a panda climb a tree, stick out it's butt and poop. Could've just done that on the ground, but I guess it's more satisfying to hear the dull thud of your poop hitting the floor. Lovely creatures.

    Seeing Su Lin the museum always fascinated me bc I love pandas but the posture that it sits in is so elegant and different than how you see pandas usually (hunched over/sitting/laid back) I wonder what was the thinking behind that position.
    What's more interesting than Panda economics is Panda politics (tho tied to economics), China essentially using the panda as a diplomatic gift or pawn towards other countries.

    I had a former client who claims her family's bamboo farm supplied bamboo for the first pandas brought into the country. I never inquired about it further but the property was a bamboo forest that had over run most of the property. Besides the driveways and buildings there was maybe a thousand square feet of land that wasn't covered in bamboo.

  • @kronos6948
    @kronos6948 Před 8 lety +12

    Aren't they having issues breeding pandas? From what I remember, pandas seem to be disinterested in mating, and would rather eat bamboo which doesn't have enough nutrients for them. It's almost as if they want to go extinct.

    • @7catstied2gether
      @7catstied2gether Před 7 lety +5

      kronos6948 Yet we continue to spend millions on breeding programs and increasingly drastic measures to persuade the females into sexual interest. Their ovulation schedule is such that the females are only fertile 2-3 days out of the year.

    • @brittanynicole7431
      @brittanynicole7431 Před 3 lety

      They breed better in the wild. Also in the wild they travel to find and eat different species of bamboo in different seasons to meet their nutritional needs. It's what they're adapted to eat and why they're expensive to feed in captivity. Any old bamboo won't due.
