Bad experience with Ozone in my reef tank!

  • Woke up this morning to a dead fish in my tank after making a change to ozone. While this comes down to being my own fault for not being more cautious, still regret using ozone at this time.

I really don’t think that your lost fish is necessarily due to the ozone. Although it’s coincidental that you ran it all night and the next morning the fish is dead the one thing you should remember about ozone is that it is extremely unstable. It was long will only stay in the water column for approximately 20 seconds. Even though you ran it all night the ozone is immediately losing the third oxygen molecule as soon as it comes in contact with organic material so there’s not a high concentration of it in your water

its not the ozone, its the hypobromite byproduct

According to me, in the use of ozone, you must have an ORP controller, and this is a necessity. Based on my experience, your ORP value should always be above 400. For reef tanks or saltwater, ORP should be maintained between 200 to 350. If it exceeds 350, it can endanger the fish gills, so ORP probes and controllers are very important in the use of ozone generators in saltwater ponds. Please let me know if there's anything you'd like to correct.

Hey man, really sorry about your loss. Started following you because I picked up the EXT 100 and am trying to get inspiration from others. I would agree with (what sounds like) your conclusion to pull the ozone. I've never personally used it, but I feel like they were phased out in the early 2010s when better stuff came along to replicate whatever that was doing.

      Thanks!
While I love technology and am open to trying out new things, it does not always pan out. This is the first time I have killed a fish while trying out a new piece of equipment. I am really sorry it happened and made for a bad day, but learned from it.
I had reservations about ozone, but wanted to give it a try. I think if you invest $1400 and get the ozone generator, dryer and reactor, you would be good. But not sure if it is worth it or not. To be determined if I invest more in it or not. Right now, feel like I will just use carbon.

That sucks about your loss. But it definitely wasn't the ozone unit. It all happens within the unit and doesn't release anything into the tank.

Carbon is only used in a bag to place on top of the skimmer to absorb the smell (if any) of ozone that escapes from the lid. You do not have to replace carbon as often as you do when it's wet and in your reactor. As far as the cost to run an ozone generator....Enaly has an all in one system that is under $200. I have this unit and it works like a charm! Fish death could of been due to over dosing ozone. 15 mg per 25 gallons per hour should be safe. I run 60 mg an hour on my 100 gallon tank with a 30 gallon sump and all is well.

Seems Ozotech, Avast Marine, Geo and many ozone users would disagree with you on using carbon on the wet side return.
Also not saying that fish death was 100% due to ozone. But that was the only change to the tank and water ICP test was fine.

I doubt carbon would reduce orp in the water it’s a good test though

Sorry for your loss I run ozone all the time with my apex and ORP at 420 have never experienced any negative effects. I run it inline from a Co2 scrubber through an air dryer media and into my skimmer air input. I run dry carbon on the lid to keep ozone from building up in the cabinet. Not sure why you had this issue unless your ORP probe is giving you bad readings or some other issue not related to ozone. Most aquarium grade ozone units would have a hard time making enough ozone to cause harm.

    • @joshdoesreefing7241
      @joshdoesreefing7241  Před 2 lety

I would have for sure agreed prior, but I can find nothing else that would have caused the issue. 1 fish that has been healthy over a year died and all other fish struggling/hiding. Turned off ozone and they all returned to normal within about 20 minutes.
I can only assume the ORP prob was inaccurate. It is new and stated in manual it came pre-calibrated. I just ran with that, but dialed it down to less than recommended to play it safe.
So while I can’t say 100% one way or another, no more issues since I stopped Ozone. So going to leave it off for now.
Thanks for commenting and for the info!
