    Like everything in life, the reasons for this are not so black and white. So, today, we're going to be diving into the curious case of Paul Pogba.

    I think what sums Pogba up most was his goal for France against Switzerland in the Euros. Brilliant strike showing how good he can be, followed by attempting 5 different celebration routines as the Swiss ran straight back up the pitch and scored immediately.

    I could see Pogba having a complete renaissance in his 30s. I can’t remember who it was but I heard an ex-pro talk about how they’d never really trained too hard throughout their 20s, sort of took everything for granted and coasted off their ability and just enjoyed the life, then when they hit 30 they realised it would all come to an end soon and they didn’t want to leave themselves with questions of what might have been so they knuckled down and worked harder then they ever had and enjoyed more success than they ever had, could see Pogba going down a similar road hopefully because the talent he has is undeniable

    • @femz6438

      Problem is Pogba trains hard, doesn't drink, Smoke or go Clubbing. Yet people expect him to do what nobody else in the history of football has done. Dude has never played with world class players in their prime besides De gea at Manchester United and has been used as a Utility man instead because of all the holes the team has

    • @jarletto
      @jarletto Před 2 lety +53

      That won't happen with Pogba. Way too laid back. Is quick to blame other factors than take responsibility. If he goes to PSG, it's going to be hilarious watching him, Messi, Neymar and Mbappe leave all the donkey work to the rest of the team. It'll be unsustainable and he'll be the first to be dropped because his stats have never been stellar. Primarily because he just doesn't have 90 minutes in him. Always fades in games. I'll be glad when he leaves because nothing encapsulates the Woodward era more than Pogba. All fancy flicks, no commitment. Not good enough off the ball to be a quality midfielder. Not aggressive, hungry or clinical enough to be a quality wide/attacking player.

      Pogba played double pivot in France with Matuidi in LAM and kante on his right. That is why it worked there.
      Pogba can't force himself to play a real CDM role and I don't fault him for it. I'm sure he feels like he is slowly being drowned while playing in that position.

    • @femz6438
      @femz6438 Před 2 lety +16

      @@Twoyutes74 Exactly, when you have a player with that ability, you only play them in defensive positions when you have to ala France for a maximum of 7 games a tournament due to it being a "Knockout" competition which requires more caution. However people don't want to understand context, over the course of the season PP should be way more advanced no questions

    • @jarletto
      @jarletto Před 2 lety +19

      @@femz6438 ah here. What a way to twist reality. The guy played a deep role at the weekend because two of our deeper midfielders were out and Rangnick wanted to rest Matic. Pogba has played utter shite wherever he has played. Play him more advanced, he's no better. He has played far more games in an advanced role so it's bogus to blame his poor form for United on playing deep. What is his position? Because he has played in an advanced left midfield role and he should be charged with negligence for the way he would leave Shaw exposed in the past. In that position he's a liability. It might go unpunished in Serie A or for France but the EPL is different. He's one of the worst players at the club off-the-ball. Doesn't track back. Certainly not fast enough. Guilty of taking too many touches when he does come back, capable of needlessly giving away possession. Reckless when it comes to tackling, like a giraffe on ice. All at 29. Plays like he's still 19.

      I doubt Juve go for him, they can't afford his wages. Juve is rebuilding with youth, but I think do have a place for a mentally strong veteran or two. Unfortunately 'mentally strong' is not how you would describe Paul Pogba's United stint.

    • @brutanedda3107
      @brutanedda3107 Před 2 lety +6

      Juve is rebuilding. They're stacked on striking roles with Vlahovic, Dybala and injured Chiesa, and very good defense, they only need a more organic midfield. If they manage to profit from Dybala or De Ligt who are going away most likely anyways, they may could take Pogba in expire. Then you would have Pogba, Locatelli and maybe Zakaria on the defensive, they would only need a very good fullback and new faces for substituting Chiellini and Bonucci, and you have a team that could win Serie A with no problems

That's not a situational problem if the only place Pogba flourishes is when he's surrounded by world class talents who do the dirty work for him, that's a huge problem and makes him unplayable without the entire team being built around him. At juventus Pogba was given the license to push forward and wasn’t bothered with defending when he was basically surrounded by 6 defenders helping out in bazargli, bonucci, chiellini, lichtsteiner/Cáceres, asamoah/evra, Vidal/Marchisio. He wasn’t burdened with being the teams creator when Pirlo was there to do that.
    At France he was surrounded with with basically 6defenders again:
    Varane
    Umiti
    Pavard (who is a cb that can also cover at rb)
    Lucas hernandez (also a cb who can cover at lb)
    Matuidi (a workaholic box to box player)
    And kante.
    The moment Pogba leaves such a defensive setup he can’t function.
    What sort of liability is that?!
    So you’re telling me that United have to put all these things in place just to unlock one players ability?! C’mon!
    99% of we the United fan base would be so bored if we played like that. And yet some people out here think 1 cdm is enough to unlock Pog, they’re joking. He’s a luxury player.
    His negative attitude started to manifest as soon as Zlatan left, almost like Zlatan was keeping him in check.

United built a team around pogba the first 2 years with Carrick, Herrera and pogba being the midfield 3 and look at the roles Carrick in the Pirlo role as a deep lying playmaker/Sitter, Herrera in the vidal role as a box to box destroyer and pogba as the advance playmaker with this you won 3 trophies then moved to matic in the pirlo role with fred as a back out for Herrera as a destroyer and finish second in the league to a super man city team and since them dropped building a team around pogba instead opting to built your team around average players such as rashford, maguire, Lukaku, McUseless and bruno which have won you nothing
      2. United ignored mourinhos request to buy fabinho or brozovic or matuidi or veratti to replace carrick instead opting to use Fellani and mctalentless as a stop gap, then refused to buy Mili-savic or Seri or Ndombele to play next to pogba as a second creative outlook settling with telling jose to use lingard which set you back 4 years in squad development because your recruitment is shit
      3. In the midfield of Kroos, Modric and Casemiro you have the same position casemiro is the destroyer, Kroos is the deep lying playmaker and modric is the advance playmaker its the same with Iniesta, Xavi and Busquets or Lampard, Makelele and Ballack or Gerrard, Xabi Alonso and lucas levia or Ozil, Xabi alonso and Khedeira or Zidane, Makelele and Gutti every one has a luxury player that you put players around to do the donkey work for
      4. United have the most fraudulent player in your team called Spamnandez that you all think is creative you didnt need a bruno in your squad you needed a Brozovic but in the league where goals are the only thing that matters you won't see it that way cause based on 99% of your fanbase bruno is better than iniesta and zidane because he scores more goals 🙄
      Look pogba failed because your club failed him if i replace pogba with Ozil, KDB, zidane, iniesta, modric or pirlo they'd all perform the same if not worse than pogba is that because their shit or is it the team built around them are below standard

      Well said. I think back to when Kroos and Modric played behind James Rodriguez at Madrid and while in some games they were good, they were hard to watch in others cause Modric and Kroos aren't a reliable defensive duo. It wasn't until Casemrio started playing behind them that Madrid as a whole became much better and the likes of Modric and Kroos weren't dragged down and burdened with large defensive duties.
      With Pogba in defence, if you want him to position himself and cut out passing lanes, then he'll that job well and at times with United and France he would even recover the ball more than someone like Fred or Kante. But as we saw under Ole we defended with no structure and so much space to cover, and in THOSE scenarios Pogba isn't great (and neither is McFred even though they run around a lot)

Also don’t forget that Conte’s and Tuchel’s style are respectively counter attacking and defensive, which were very similar to Mou’s. So it’s really not about tactical style. Mourinho’s lack of recent success are more about his own psychology (I’m a believer that what happened in Real broke him) which affects his man management results, not optimal recruitments, his own tactical mistakes, and at some cases, some bad luck from injuries.

I think going to United was a huge mistake for him and he's wasted what should have been his prime years at a mess of a football club. @@leandro8897 I said that he has been far too inconsistent for the English Premier League. I appreciate that he was brilliant in Italy, hence why Man Utd spent all that money to bring him back. But that was in a different league, played at a different pace and he was surrounded by some fantastically gifted footballers, such as Pirlo, who allowed him to play to his strengths more of the time.
      But if you look at how he has played during his second spell with United, he has not performed consistently at the level that he can play at. He has had countless opportunities but he has never really capitalised on these.

I don’t like United but the problems start with the players themselves. They don’t hold themselves accountable. The only players conducting themselves in a professional manner are Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Matic, Dallot, Cavani and Sancho, De Gea and Mata.They go out and try their hardest and put in work. All the other players are there just to collect a check.when you look at the squad size and you have toxic players like Greenwood and Pogba who just sandbag and only show up and perform when they feel, that’s a problem. Mata is 5 years his senior and puts in more effort at the games and performs more consistently. Pogba should go to PSG. @@ravecrab You've absolutely nailed it on the head there - he doesn't learn from his bad games. There's an element of narcissism in there, maybe because he's won a WC, but you are so right, he has never learned to better his game. So often he just rinses and repeats the same moves and gets found out, yet every now and then he luckily pulls off a worldy and all the critics suddenly jump on his bandwagon again. He's been found wanting so many times, I doubt there is much left in his future. Reminds me a bit of Anelka, although Anelka was arguably the better footballer, even if he was shocking under pressure

    Honestly, I am just so done with the whole “this guy has amazing ball skills so let’s spend crazy money on him and tout him as the next big thing”. There is soooo much more to football than that. Solely on club level, Pogba is a very very mediocre player. There are tons of players that contribute as much as him on the pitch that don’t get near as much money or fame.

    • @lemiphil2388

      Bro this is exactly the point. Football has now become a sport where you just throw money at a problem and there's little support for managers. Players run the game and what they want goes.

    • @playea123
      @playea123 Před 2 lety +6

      @@lemiphil2388 ehhh my point is tangent to that but not exactly. My point is that the money is going in the wrong direction. After all, it's usually the managers making the player acquisition decisions. They are just choosing to go with "finesse" over substance. Maybe that's because finesse gets you higher ticket sales or more lucrative sponsorships but it rarely, imho, translates to success on the field. Just look at PSG or Man City. Crazy money. Absolutely crazy payrolls (throwing money at the problem), but they still haven't been able to win the big one ( UCL ). Whereas teams like RM or Bayern Munich who are willing to pay, but usually go for substance, keep winning.

      man, dude’s a monster. Even at united where he did pretty bad he’s still one of the best midfielders in the prem. And just wanna let you know that when he was at juve a lot of fans compared him to zidane himself. he’s arguably not even in the top 10 midfielders atm but you can’t call him mediocre, using that word near pogba’s name feels like blasfemy

      @@pincopall500 what exactly is your criteria for “best midfielders in the Prem”? Also, at Juve, he was compared to a young Zidane and that he had the potential to reach that strata. Not that he was at prime Zidane level at that time. He absolutely had all the potential in the worlds and maybe that’s part of why he was highly sought after but let’s not act like he has met or exceeded expectations. To mention him and Zidane at the same sentence now is heresy.

    Great talent, crap attitude. It's that simple - whichever way you look at it, he's overrated.
    Argument #1: He shouldn't play a disciplined role
    If anyone thinks so, especially under Mourinho, then look no further than what a player Joe Cole became. Listen to how much he credited Jose for bringing his game to the next level. Or see how much KDB contributes off the ball. He is talented but his abilities doesn't warrant a "free (of defensive responsibilities) role" like Messi or Ronaldo.
    Argument #2: But he plays well for France
    This is a fallacy, tournaments are mostly 7-8 matches long at most. Then remember that you only see him often perform well for only half a tournament - that's about 3-4 games. Club seasons are much longer than that and will expose anyone who cannot be consistent. For someone who is 29 now and has plenty of experience, he still shows immaturity. Just look at how he frustrated his teammates in France during the last Euro match last year. And for players who mature with age, look at Modric, Pirlo, and Scholes, to name a few.
    Argument #3: He is a good guy
    People only think he's a good guy because he seems carefree and should be fun to party with. That's not the primary function of a footballer, especially one paid millions per year. Roy Keane is definitely not a fun nice guy to be with, but he dragged the team through so many bad games. The way he and his agent talks to the media to flirt with other clubs during every international break also shows his poor attitude and an utter lack of respect for the club who still pays his weekly wages, as well as no respect for their fans. That also proves the virus comment by Mourinho - see how other players like Luke Shaw have started talking the same way like him recently.

      What a player joe Cole became? What player was that- his game changed but he never became a world beater. Ultimately sign a player and play to his strengths- Jose took the player out of John obi Mikel too, he has an obsession of killing the flair out of midfielders- just don’t sign them lol. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t. Although not the same talent wise- Jose did the same with mctominay. Any midfielder that looks physically imposing he seems to feel must be a defensive player, it’s stupid.
      His performances for France aren’t a fallacy- he performs well- yes it’s less football games but it’s higher pressure disproving the myth of his supposed lack of mentality- he’s always one of their key performers too. It’s not immaturity but suitability he’s an offensive player given defensive duty because he’s big… you wouldn’t play ozil or grealish etc where he’s expected to…
      You mention France being a fallacy because it’s a small number of games? Well Keane dragging united is a fallacy bevause ultimately how many games did Keane have to do that? It was a spell where united was dominating with the best manager and players! This united period post fergie has constantly been poor Keane would have to drag united monthly if not almost weekly and he couldn’t and wouldn’t. Keane in this side would end up trying yes but ultimately just screaming on the pitch in frustration or dare u say criticising the players or tactics in the media like he did at united before.
      The media stuff is an angle, he’s asked questions and answers as truthfully as possible- the future may or may not be at united, sure we want all players to say I’m staying at united forever but ultimately I respect honesty. He came back happy but since then Things at united aren’t going great…
      Truth is pogba was signed under the idea he was central to a big project but ended up being signed to shoehorn as a cog in a poor machine- that doesn’t suit his game and has rarely been given the freedom to drag his team out of the mud in a more free role- a double edged sword. He’s also scapegoated- I have never watched a game and thought “pogba is the no1 culprit” he’s just been part of the whole underperforming team. Jose can’t speak on being a virus, we haven’t heard of pogba being a problem at juve or France but Jose has lost multiple dressing rooms and player issues- he’s the common denominator… he even mocked united football heritage lol.

    Pogba's lack of strength of character is the main reason he hasn't been able to perform as well as he should at United. He isn't a man to drag a team out from the depths. He is undeniably top quality but he's also a total luxury player and somewhat of a cruiser; the absolute best example of this is France's Euro 2020 exit against Switzerland in which he played exceptional while France were on the front foot and scored an incredible long distance goal to make it 3-1. After that belter he actualised the hyperbolic narrative of arrogance perpetuated by the likes of Souness and performing a blatantly choreographed dance act to celebrate. The commentators were convinced the game was over at that point, as was I.
    Switzerland then mounted a comeback and Pogba was nowhere to be seen. He was lax on switching the emphasis to defence along with the rest of the team and they lost on penalties. All flash, no verve. If in a parallel universe Pogba had the fortune of being managed by Guardiola at City, I suspect he would be the player we all thought he would. Pogba is definitely a victim of circumstance at United given his absence of mettle.
