What are you thinking?? Having two hot girls in a video aimed at a bunch of repressed geeks? I watched the whole video and I don't remember a thing about it. (Were they baking a raspberry pie?)
Nice tip for the Linux command line:
When typing filenames (of files that already exist) or package names, you can type just the first few characters and then hit the TAB key.
If it can work out what you're trying to type - as there's only one filename / package name that you could mean - then it'll auto-complete it for you. If it's ambiguous - more than one file / package could match what you've typed so far - then you can hold TAB and it'll show a list of matches. Type a few more characters, until it's unique and it knows what you want, then hit TAB to auto-complete it.
This not only speeds up typing commands, but it means you don't have to get filenames and packages exactly right. Just the first few characters and hit TAB for auto-complete.
So you could have typed, say, "sudo apt install choc" and then hit TAB. If "chocolate-doom" is the only package that fits "choc*" then it'll just auto-complete it. If there's a few packages that starts "choc" then holding TAB will give you a list of the matches - type enough to make it unique, so the command line understands which one you mean, and it'll then auto-complete.
(Particularly with "apt", as there's an awful lot of packages, if the list of matches is a bit on the ginormous side - like, try "lib" and hit TAB, as there's tons of library packages that start with "lib" - then it'll rather say "list all 158 possibilities (y / n)?" and you hit "y" to see the list. This is just because, you know, the list of matches could be truly massive, so it does have a built-in "are you sure?" and paging for very long lists.)
The command line also has a history too. If you press up arrow then it'll step back in the command history (and down arrow, as you might guess, does the opposite and steps forward in the command history), so if you've typed it before, then you can call it back up. Very useful if you just made a small typo - up arrow to get the last command back again and then edit it to what it should have been then hit Enter.
The TAB auto-complete and history feature can make using the command line a bit faster and more convenient.
Also, interesting fact.
DOOM originally used the arrow keys, rather than WASD, to control the character. While this might feel a bit awkward for a right-handed person - as you've got to reach over with your left hand for the arrow keys on most PC keyboards - John Carmack, who coded DOOM, is left handed.
So, for him, with his mouse on the left side of him, and arrow keys under his right hand, this was perfectly natural and that's how he coded it.
But, yeah, most modern games prefer the "WASD" keys instead, these days, because most people are right-handed. Although, the best games account for both righties and South paws alike, by allowing either "WASD" or arrow keys (or, you know, just provide a "define keys" options screen to set it how you like).
So, in fairness to LadyFractic, John Carmack's default layout is actually a left-handed layout and that is a bit awkward for right-handers.
@@klaxoncow Actually controlling movement with the arrow keys in Doom can be right handed since in the early days, I didn't use mouse for doom, and used the left hand to control left/right strafe using the comma and period keys. Remember doom did not have a concept of aiming up or down, just side to side, so the extra control to aim with the mouse wasn't as necessary. It was only when Quake came out that up and down aiming became possible/needed.
at 22:45 ... Do you try giving some charcoal pills to the "Diarrea" keyboard ?? .... looks like it finally sh💩💩💩it. itself... 😳
I really love Perifractic, his wife, Ladyfratic, and their doggos. I recently lost my brother (he was my best friend in the entire world), and I have been looking to fun, feel-good videos like these to cheer me up. Thank you, Retro Recipes, for being there for me in this dark time in my life. Love you guys; blessings to you all.
Thank you for your kind words. We are thinking of you and are very sorry to hear that news. ❤️- Familyfractic
I’m sorry to hear that. Lost my mom to stage 4 in October. Dads fighting stage 4 now….. and once he’s gone I’m alone at 33. No family. CZcams and content nerds have kept me alive these past few years
@@hullinstruments I am truly sorry. I will pray for you and your father.
Sorry for your loss! Sending good mojo your way! Be strong!
Sorry that you lost your Brother, I lost my brother in 2005 and while it never get's better, it certainly helps that I can look back and be reminded about the good time we both had in the 80's playing on our Commodore 64.
I just noticed that the VHS ffw effect is relative to the actual time in the video. That amount of detail is amazing.
Great video!
Thank you for noticing! Peri and I painstakingly edit our videos in the ways we would want to watch them. 😊- LF
OH marvelous!! We do love episodes with the trifecta Ladyfractic, Josiefractic & Perifractic!!!
Absolute couple goals to straight up have your passion bleed into your SO’s so much that they don’t just tolerate it, or love it independently themselves, but love it with you. So freaking cool.
Wow so much went wrong! From 3D print jobs failing causing multiple-day setbacks, to Ladyfractic cutting her hands on the computer pieces, breaking the monitor ribbon cable, the keyboard not working over USB, the monitor orientation being upside-down, and the OS constant crashing, this series has it all!
Thank you for showing us that with hard work and perseverance, you too can run the shareware version of Doom on an 8-inch screen! Jokes aside, thank you for a super entertaining & informative build series. Looking forward to what's next, maybe a demonstration of the Gameboy sewing machine?
Pro Tip: attach everything outside the case, to check that it all works... and you have all the right cables.
Now I get a mental image of everything attached to the outside of case with double-sided foam tape, with no plan to actually put it inside the case.
As much as I was indifferent to RGB-lights-on-everything when it first came out, I cannot deny the subdued brilliance of that keyboard in this build. So great and thanks for sharing all of this with us.
agreed i think the keyboard fits well with the computer case its colorful but not too distracting
This is such a fun build. I love that you showed all the mishaps.
The screen part helped me a lot with my build of this. So, HIGHLY valuable!
So cool seeing it in action, I really wanted my own - it’d make a great gift for my nephews ☺️ Also - nice to see the advert for Pikuma, I can vouch for the 3D course, I’ve signed up for the 6502 course after 🙂 Nice work!
Thank you! I recommend printing your own while of course learning from my printing mistakes! That’s also great to hear about Pikuma. It’s a company we really believe in and feel it aligns with our message. - LF
It was nice to see the build including the troubles, makes me feel better about my own projects, there's always a few dozen setbacks lol. Looks great!
I like how the original machines were a mess of solder, and the new one is a mess of wires. Sums up most raspberry pi projects though.
Thanks for the great video! Watching the three of you having fun is hilarious!
Fantastic job Lady F! Really appreciated seeing all of the hiccups. Half the battle on a project like this is not sweating the setbacks so thanks for showing how to do it right. Also loved the Doom level 1 treat at the end.
Thanks for the kind words and support! - LF
These two are delightful to watch and I love there projects
Kinda cool how far SBC's have come. In a few years every kid will be making their own robots, meanwhile, I still haven't achieved Elite rank in Elite on the C64...
I need to try that game cause I'm hooked on elite:dangerous rn and haven't gotten elite in anything yet
Great work on the computer and video, Ladyfractic & Josiefractic. I always enjoy seeing a great Raspberry Pi project from start to finish. That keyboard is fabulous.
You video's are always a bright part of my week. Thanks again.
Just watched both videos back to back, very fun build all of you. Thank you 👌🏻😊
Fun project! It's been fun to watch it come together. Gotta say I'm happy to see someone else using that keyboard! My daughter and I love mine.
That is absolutely impressive, you guys make an amazing team 👍🏾
I really enjoy watching people deal with hurdles (self-induced or not) that occur during their projects. Makes me feel less alone in that regard. I laughed several times during this video. Don't worry, they were all "sympathy laughs"!
I am so glad! We firmly stand behind not sugar coating our projects. It's not realistic and I feel it's misleading. Also I am very accident prone and have to laugh at it 😆- LF
Here in Montréal we usually have Canadian bees, but it's not that rare to see a USB.
you managed to put 5 cable into 3 components in just about an hour, without destroying ALL of them. congrats
and it went really fast from "we don't need this guy" to "darling, can you help us, we're lost already"
Awesome job! Great work! Love it! I had a idea for others following. When dealing with the upside-down display, to avoid the reverse controls, you can turn your mouse backwards until the screen orientation settings are adjusted.
This is like the beautiful people channel. Are you all models in your spare time or something? Great video as always! I love raspberry pi projects.
I absolutely adore your channel. I stumbled upon the Callisto 2 a few days ago while looking through Retro Terminal STLs for a “home library” digital card catalogue build. I am extremely excited to see the Fractal’s build. Time to get the slicer spooled up. Thanks for demo!
It's always a treat when the lovely Josiefractic gets involved.
I really love the look & feel of this computer. Good job ladies & Peri with the diarrhea keyboard too, good to know!
2:43 the Switches are colored, which refers to the loudness of the click (if any) and the pressure and distance needed to do a keystroke. The key caps can be any color.
That "banana for scale", as far as I know, is an inner joke in 9GAG
Btw, that new sponsor with retro programming courses is an awesome addition! So much fun!
Thanks guys, great video!
"Fractic" is the opposite of how I would describe Perry's disposition.
Great video! Nice end to the project... giving me some ideas for a Pi build.
Thanks for sharing!
I love you guys!!!! Been looking for exactly this kind of case for a while. Plus the thingverse link shows a slightly larger version for a slightly bigger monitor. Definitely gonna use this to rebuild my home file server.
This was a fun video to watch! 🙂
Love the two of the *fractics building together. And... ok, the dogs are also adorable!
Now we need a Ladyfratic episode where she plays games on her new computer. 👍🏻
Good work Lady Fractic. That keyboard sound is so satisfying!
Thank you! It is definitely my favorite part of the project. -LF
That last pronunciation - pig-eon - made me think of Fawlty Towers and Basil the rat🤣
Good ear! Thats exactly what it was from! The three of us are huge Fawlty Towers fans and quote it daily. - LF
awesome! love these vids, feel nicely professional.
In the terminal you can press the up arrow instead of retyping your entire command again...
glad you mentioned this as i was about to comment same thing , pressing up is a life saver
I love this stuff! Great video, folks!
Love these EPs. Great seeing this come together. High five
What a great project! Nicely done!
Thank you so much! - LF
9:25 "Feild trip?" Field trip!" (Cue "Yakety Sax") Thank you, Boots Randolph, and Benny Hill!
That's a awesome project to do and it nice to have a build to show not just a hollowed out old console, props to you guys 👏 love your material keep the awesome work going
My favorite Saturday morning show. And I've been looking forward to this one specifcally. A lot.
Also, Ladyfractic is awesome.
Side note: You now owe Dan Forden a dollar.
Or does he owe me a dollar for keeping him relevant 30 years later? 😆 - LF
What fun! Thanks for sharing.
Another great video thanks!
You could easily add an external USB SSD for more storage on the system. There's plenty of space in that case.
I imagine I'm not the first person to say this, but the "-y" at the end of that apt command is a flag that allows you to skip all the y/n questions that may be asked, and just answers "y" for everything. If you had put a space between "chocolate-doom" and "-y" it would've run the same, just without asking you any questions.
Love the videos, keep doing your thing.
_"Woooow, that's a lot of cords."_
lol
Nicely done! However, I have a question... how come the boot sequence log and everything was correct side up when you used your RetroPie SD card? I would expect it to be rotated again... so upside down...
We discovered a hidden option in the monitor itself for rotate.
Even nicer! Cute machine.
I think that was an amazing job. Well done to Ladyfractic, Josefractic and Mr Ladyfractic. It might be nice to polish up the Dierya keyboard with some retro style key caps to give the full retro effect. Maybe a paint job on the case as well?
Still, this was a great episode.
P.S. I'm not sure that screen is designed for middle-aged+ eyes to look at. Magnifying glass at the ready for older users to read the screen. Either that or get Specsavers as a sponsor.
The key caps is a good idea. As for painting it, I made sure to choose a filament that was already the preferred shade of Retro Beige. The screen seems like it isn't designed for anyone over the age of 12! 😆- LF
@@RetroRecipes Fair enough. Retro beige is a good choice.
Enjoy typing on the Dierya, which looks very like the Royal Kludge 61 keyboard I bought a few years ago.
I love it! I really want to build one of these computers.
I love it! I have to make my own now!
Awesome! I always have wanted to make my own "retro-modern" computer, I have to find a local 3d printer service 😅
I was wondering about the monitor kit for the raspberry pi. Also I laugh when was backwards. Thanks for the video.
I love this family so much, you are awesome
Great work ladyfractic, makes me want to build one of these :)
Thank you Ladyfractic, Josiefractic & Perifractic a great episode. Go the retro computers
What RP imagine are you using there? Looks great.
So nice job working out the kinks! I'd only suggest adding a heatsink since the pi 4 runs hotter than previous models, and it does impact performance.
We will probably slap one on next time we sit down to play a game 😊 - LF
Thank you. You guys make life a little easier :)
I'm printing mine right now, started the day before yesterday. All goes well, so far. My third big part is almost done, just in time before getting out of filament. Ordered the same colour (silver) today. I try to print the pins and monitor parts this evening, I think there's just enough for that. Then the three other big parts. I'm not very experienced in 3D- printing, but I'm stunned of the results on my Creality Ender 3D Pro. I like the videos of both of you, certainly the ones about Knightrider. I was a big fan in the eightees. Best regards from The Netherlands. Btw, I subscribed!
Woo-hoo!! Working project! Always awesome to hit this stage. 👍️ I'm surprised you didn't dub in Anders Jensen's _Doom_ theme remix at the end there.
I never heard of this pigeonOS before but now I understand why 😅
Anyways, that's a great video. I want to see more Lady Fractic experiments like this one 😀
That's why I hate those thin cables, so easy tear but not easy to fix (aside from replacing). Is the Doom audio edited to avoid copyright or is that an issue with the Pi (either OS or the game engine)?
Remember. Original Doom didn't allow the player to look/aim up and down, nor jump, so WASD controls wasn't a thing yet for first person shooters when Doom was new in the mid 90s. You can rebind keys to do that.
OMG, such a smart woman! She used an Anti-static wrist strap! If she wasn't already taken! Haha great video!
Bit late catching this but hey sometimes life gets in the way. This was a great part 2 and it was great seeing JosieFractic,. I will say this this would of made me mad with the problems you had so am super glad you got it all working. As always loved the dad jokes and ofc the dog burp cracked me up😂. Keep up the fantastic work and roll on the next one, until then take care and have a great weekend 🙂
We only published this 3 hours ago. I wouldn't consider that late, but right on time! Thank you for the kind words! 😊- LF
Where did you get the model for that? Have you seen the scifi TV show severance? At the main characters work they have 4 cubicles set up in an office and they're all using Data general dasher terminals but the weird operating system that's on them is added in post. After the first season I really wanted to 3d print the chasis and put a raspberry pi/screen/etc inside with some animation and sounds from the show. This looks really cool.
Links in description 👍🕹️
I have retro pie but only raspberry pi 1. Been using that for streaming video from my NAS to my projector. I don't know if it will work on the original machine
Great show ! Funny and very entertaining :-) !
I enjoyed watching a lot !
Thank you! We enjoy making them 😊- LF
I wish I could've laughed at the "hide the paint harold" smile at 18:50 but that has happened to me too and I really felt the pain. Must be really frustrating especially when you are trying to film a video. Thanks for keeping it in the final edit. It feels much more real when you can see that building stuff has it's struggles.
Great video as always. *I did comment in part 1 that the ribbon cable was plugged in backwards, I did what I could :(
You did! I referred to it in the video at 16:54 because I remembered your comment. I will say the reason I plugged it in that way was because you would typically plug them in with the cable facing downward, even though this one was weirdly opposite. I'd never seen one like that before. - LF
A treat! Fighting through some adversity, working with friends (and who doesn't like a visit from Josie??), and having some fun after final success? Fun video. And even if that keyboard name is a bit dubious, the sound and lighting are still calling out to me! :-) But seriously, thx for an upbeat video with some humour.
I must say, JosieFractic is very good humoured about being teleported without warning, it must be disconcerting.
Thank you very much for that, very good episode.
You give off that teacher/trainer vibe
Nice Retropi edition, which one is it?
Your setup runs the Doom much better than what I remember my 386 running it 😄
I did the same thing with the HDMI for Pi. Bought a mini instead of micro, because I didn't realize those were 2 different things. Doh!
I know LadyFractic and yourself are big fans of ASMR, so how about LF doing a video about the different kinds of Keyswitch? [seeing as Blue switches got a mention in this video]. Blues are clicky, brown are bumpy and reds are smooth :)
That was a lot of fun 💯😊
What a fantastic video , really interesting and your 3d printed case is fab, lady fractic reminds me of an 80s pop star such a cool look 👍
when You're sliding to last base and your pants feel of foam DIERYA DIERYA, yes I know I'm a big kid lol.
BTW the song (benny hill theme) is Boots Randolph - yakety sax
and I thought Josie was going to save the day
Loved watching this. Out of curiosity what Retropie Theme are you running and which Commodore 64 emulator?
We can’t remember 🤦🏻♂️ Found it via the Facebook group
doom 1 and 2 on a pi are fantastic.i have them running on my gpi case
what is the jmouse that you ended up using there - looks great !
That’s from THEA500
@@RetroRecipes thanks :) Doesnt look like its being sold currently :( BUT i know what to search for now ! "Tank style mouse!" Thank you!
This is amazing! I would love having something like that. Also anything with Ladyfractic is such a treat! ❤️
Thank you!❤️☺️❤️ - LF
Great video as always. Wouldn’t it be great to boot straight into a retro type of OS or BASIC with all the bells and whistles of a modern computer like internet, plenty of storage, great audio and video and retro style games? Have been searching for that but could not find any.
That would be great! Let us know if you ever find this magical OS!- LF
Great video, what would home computing be without crashes and hours of tinkering 👍😂
perfractic! well done .
what a nice system.
It looks just like the terminal I learned to program on. Except for the dancing keyboard and the multi-color monitor.
i love you guys! California games I was bobbing my head to the music, I had it on the master system but still... :)
Great build, thanks, you may want to think about some heatsinks and possibly a fan for the Pi :)
Heat sink is already on there now 😊
25:15 At first I thought that wallpaper is a photo of... Dierya
Where can I buy one of these retro computers? I don't have a 3d printer.
Fun to have in the background while my littlest and I play on the commodore (mini)
You inspired me to play Brutal Doom.
That was fun!
