    Very happy you cleared up the false impression of the arch of the Ayub bridge 🌉 over the Indus at Sukkhar .
    I remember the mighty Indus being as wide as the sea at Sukkhar in 1968 , before Terbela became operational . We were going to Karachi from Rawalpindi stayed the night at Khair pur circuit house - great memories

      An English explorer circa 1825 noted that the Indus in summer spate spread all the way to Shikarpur. What a magnificent river it once was.

    It was another very interesting episode. Lord Dalhousie was Governor General and not Viceroy.

      Thank you, sir. As pointed out Jafar Hussain above, Lord Dalhousie was not the viceroy but the governor general. My error.

    The Howrah bridge is also a cantilever. I am guessing that they didn’t have technologies for sinking shafts for pillars to support cables those days. A cantilever is much easier to install once the structure is transported.

      @salmanrashid8880 Před 2 lety

      Yes. I think it was lack of technology to sink piers in sand beds that made for the Lansdowne cantilever.

      @@salmanrashid8880 There's a book on Indian Railways we had worked on you might enjoy since your dad was a part of it. Not sure if I'd be able to post the name or details here due to youtube rules. Perhaps on your blog if you are interested, or twitter :)

    Truly enjoyed hearing about Rohri and Lansdowne Bridge. One detail you missed out was the tale of "Ho jamalo" connected deeply with Lansdowne.
    Looking forward to Kandhar State Railways story.

      I heard the "ho jamalo" story many years ago. But I don't remember what it was.

    • @syedasimbashir
      @syedasimbashir Před 2 lety

      @Salman Rashid That is the story of the prisoner Jamalo Khoso who was a condemned prisoners in Sukkur, who offered to ride the train when the Engineers who designed the Lansdowne bridge were not sure if the train would go across. Jamalo Khoso rode it and was given a pardon and thus the song "Ho jamalo" which still has the lyrics "جيڪو سکر واري پل تي " in reference to his action.

      I have one story of my journey from Bannu to Mari Indus in 1987. It was a narrow gauge train, but the line is now gone. Stations dismantled. No sign of any line having ever existed.
