    Good review ! I've the Canon (1.4 ) as that was what came with this second hand 5Dii purchase .
    It's a nice lens , and I always try to stop down to f5.6 minimum if possible as the definition is so improved
    in most lenses by then . Thanks Christopher

    I appreciate the review man! The pictures you took showed what the lenses could do.
    This was my first video of yours that I've ever watched and complete disclosure: I'm hesitant to watch more because I felt a string bias on your end for the sigma lens. I understand personal preference and there is a place for that. But let that be known. Your video came across as to be a completely objective comparison video yet it was litered with personal remarks on the Canon lenses

    I'm in Japan at the moment and managed to find a mint condition Sigma 50 f/1.4 for around 200 GBP, pretty excited to use it. My go-to lens is the Tamron 24-70 but I've been looking for a fast prime (I won't use it enough to justify the Art version!).

    I have the Sigma (canon mount) and I wish that Sigma would improve their quality control because they could make some fantastic lenses if they'd fix the focusing issues on Canon cameras, I'm not sure how this lens behaves on Nikon cameras. I also used a friends Canon 1.8 MK1 and that one worked perfectly, the Sigma sometimes has focus issues and hunts for focus in low light when even the kit lens is able to lock focus. So here are my thoughts about the Sigma 1.4...the good: Good build quality, 9 diaphragm blades, fast auto focus , comes with a case and lens hood and free calibration for 1 year from sigma; The Bad: it's extremely soft at F1.4 and gets sharp from F2.0, it's not weather sealed and if not handled with care will soon be full of dust inside the barrel between the lens elements, for some reason it hunts in low light and has times when it will either front or back focus but not always

    Christopher, thank you for all of your work reviewing, and especially thank you for sharing your faith with your viewers.
    How do you think the Canon 1.4 compares to the recently released new Canon 1.8 stm? The vignetting on the old 1.8 was really really bad, how is it with the new 1.8 stm?
    Thanks again.
    Oh, one correction I'd like to make, having a long focus throw is far preferable for video, I believe you stated the opposite in this vid, or perhaps I misunderstood. That is why cinema lenses differ from photography lenses. Some have 300 degree (and beyond) focus throws. This helps to accurately and smoothly pull/rack focus.

    I just ordered the sigma lens for an REALLY old canon 400d it will be interesting to see how it works. my daughter uses canon f1.4 on her 600d, so now we can compare which one is the best :-). (the 1.4 canon lens was an major improvement compared to the 18-55 lens the camera was bought with). Im looking for an affordable full frame camera to use with the sigma lens in the future.

    The 24-105 is f4. It also has a diaphragm weakness which shows up as error 01. It caught me out when on a break abroad. I loved the lens though when I had it, but moved from my Canon 5d MKII to Fuji XPro1. Could well return to Canon if they bring out a proper retro style camera.

    I've had every canon 50 1.2 1.4 and 1.8. Just got a steal on the sigma and couldn't pass it up. We shall see how mine stacks up. I'm just tired of my beloved 1.4 messing up with the focus because of the weak inner tube.

  • @dashwoodfox
    @dashwoodfox Před 8 lety +1

    Though the build quality of the 1.8 seems cheaper than the Canon 1.4, the mechanics inside the are 1.8 actually more durable. I've had the same 1.8 for over 10 years now and it's still works like new. My Canon 1.4 wore itself out only after 2 years. Apparently that's common for the Canon 50mm 1.4 to wear itself out fairly quickly. Which is disappointing because I really liked that lens.

    A month ago I bought a used Sigma 50mm 1.4 from a guy for $300 Cdn. I got super lucky as it's in perfect condition (suprisingly) and gives me nice results on my 7D. I would rather have that over the plastic Canon versions.

  • @Cryptic0110
    @Cryptic0110 Před 10 lety +6

    Had the canon 1.4 and ended up getting rid of it for the sigma 1.4. Build quality of the sigma in my opinion, blows the canon out of the water. The autofocus is a little loud on the sigma but doesn't bother me. The auto focusing is a little faster on the canon but not fast enough to make it worth it over the sigma. Plus the focus ring on the sigma is way nicer and smoother. Especially if you are doing video. Thats my experience. Nice review!

  • @SymonSaysTV
    @SymonSaysTV Před 10 lety +14

    1:44 It's exactly the opposite. Long traveling is much better for focusing in video mode.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  Před 10 lety +3

      I disagree (although of course in the end it's down to personal taste). I find a shorter path much better for handheld video work, as you can quickly pull focus, and also, as 1080p video is much lower resolution than a still picture, you simply don't need the same level of precise focusing that a long travel provides.

    • @SymonSaysTV
      @SymonSaysTV Před 10 lety +2

      Christopher Frost Photography I don't want to argue with you Christopher, but apparently lenses manufacturers didn't get your point either. One of the particularities of cine lenses is the long traveling of the focussing barrel for better precision in manual. It helps to hit your marks easier without going over. Short traveling is only good in automatic mode (photography) for quicker focussing by the lens. I have the Sigma 30mm 1.4 and to me, it's only down side for shooting video is exactly the short traveling witch makes my footage soft to frequently. And sorry but, If you shoot movies you need absolute precision in each shot. It's not less important than for photo.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  Před 10 lety

      SimonMics Well, like I said, it's down to personal taste. I think we're coming from different places here, because I just do quite casual video work, somehow managing to get sharp footage with short focus paths. If you were filmmaking professionally, then I can imagine you might prefer a longer path to keep your rig options open. The reason I think precision is less important for video is because 1080p video yields only about a 2-megapixel image, whereas still work yields 18mp, so out of focus shots are more noticable. But, yes, horses for courses

    I don't know with this specific Sigma lens but with some other Sigma EX/Art and Tokina PRO lenses, even I have no problem with my old 5D but but only on newer bodies (FF and APS-C).
    I have to put my camera on Servo AF, even in portrait or landscape to avoid AF accuracy problems. Strange but it works.
    I use also these lenses with an AF adapter on MFT and no problem neither on Panasonic nor Olympus.
    May be Canon once again changed the EF mount behavior, like they did in the early 2000s, forcing to re-chip third parties lenses, and now, again,3rd parties are no more 100% compatible.
    Thanks Canon, their mounts are already a mess with EF, EFS, EFM,RF, RFS, TSE, MPE ... and now they create compatibility issues with external suppliers.

      When I attached the 50mm lens, I thought I got a bad lens because the lens starting spazzing out - focusing constantly. The loud noise coupled with possessed focus ring moving on its own made me think I got a bad lens.

      That's probably because you are using AI FOCUS or AI SERVO mode in 70D instead of ONE SHOT AF. If you switch to ONE SHOT, then your lens will not try to constantly focus and you can easily auto-focus without having to switch to manual focus.

    A friend of mine lended me her 550d and f1.4 len for a short film i wanted to shoot.I have a 600d.I tried the f1.4 on my 600d and the video didnt have any visual difference compared to 18-55 standard I tried it on the 550d of my friends and it had a nice kind of hazy out of focus that looked like anamorphic lens.How is this possible?I checked the settings they are mostly the same!!HELP PLEASE!!

      you should have tried it in low light, the difference is literally night and day.

      Check if you are using Auto Exposure mode, which the camera hardly open up the aperture to f1.4, and if you shoot in daylight, the aperture might even be around f5.6~f.8, so it won't be different from any lens. You might want to research about aperture control and effects, then how to use manual exposure on your camera.

      There's no such lens as the 24-105 f/1.4, but I know what you mean. The Sigma is better

      I got brand new canon ef 50mm f/1.4 for 199euros which was 50eur more than canon ef 50mm f/1.8 stm - do you think it was good deal? and which 50mm lens you would think as good upgrade after this one? thank you for your videos they have been useful.

    • @christopherfrost

      Sounds like a good deal to me. An upgrade to that might be the Tamron 45mm f/1.8 VC, or Sigma 50mm f/1.4 ART

    I think Sigma is the winner here. It is sad if Sigma would better then Canon. I hope this doesn't count for all the Canon lenses...

    I have the Sigma 50 1.4. The AF is useless unless you're using Live View. Calibration done by the official Sigma retailer in my country didn't help. My recommendation is to not buy the pre-Art Sigma lenses, unless you are given the chance to check them with your camera for AF accuracy. An f1.4 lens that doesn't focus right is useless.

      i would agree, get a ruler marked off in 64th of a inch. test it to see if it focus in same place . tripod, ruler ,and set focus to min and focus. snap picture do it 10 times . repeat do same thing when set to infinity. if it focus in the same spot adjust camera micro focus ..... if it dose not focus in same place you got a bad one. or try another lens and repeat . to find out if its the camera or the lens
