There were a couple of weeks during HotS where the best PVZ build was to make cannons across the map

The cannon rush is certainly good to see, surprisingly effective despite the very sloppy building placement.

If I had to guess, I would say the build placement was intentionally designed for ravager defense. Keeping them spaced out is bad against drones and lings, but good against biles. There are pro builds that spread them out against Zerg as a 1 base contain. They use gateway > stalker with batteries to hold the Zerg on 1 base.
