At each step along the way, Dream and Lucifer were embodying the things they "became", such that each blow was reflected onto their... more central selves, if you will. If Lucifer had an element in mind to kill hope, e.g. "I am doubt," they would need to embody that concept. And that embodiment, whatever it happened to be, would have destroyed them.

Love the depiction of this fight. So weird and creative. I like the change that it's between Morpheus and Lucifer rather than the demon that took the helm. Bit of building for things to come. For some reason I was surprised they kept Anti-Life because it's such a DC concept, but I suppose it's name spells out what it is clearly enough for non-comic readers.
edit: except I hate Matthew butting in. Feels like it should be against the rules, for one. And for two it's way too heavy handed, too much spelling shit out. I'm sure Patton's a huge fan of the graphic novel but his voice is distracting. Minecraft story mode sounding ass

The best part about this "game" is that everything can be beaten, everything has a counter. However, in order to destroy something you must accept the absolute truth of what you become, and there are things which we all refuse to do. Lucifer cannot destroy hope without accepting the inevitability of it's defeat in the great war. The way to win is not to think of something bigger or grander than the opponent, but to understand the opponent before they understand you.

  • @DeathMessenger1988

The best part of Dream's last move is that it puts Lucifer in a REALLY tough position, personally-wise. Plenty things can "kill" hope if you think about it. Certain familiar powers like Despair, Destiny, Death or Destruction, for instance.
However, Hope is something that even Demons and Fallen Angels depend on. Lucifer and the Legions of Hell still hope to win Apocalypse and defy God (who they perceive as a tyrant who must be dethroned), after all. It's the neutral force of motivation and will to power, a middle term between the realms of Dream (i.e. imagination, the dreaming of what you don't have) and Desire (i.e. self-explanatory, the wishing for something you don't have). Satanism, for example, is all about the idea that you can ultimately overcome all imposed rules and structures of a tyrannous God and a society that worships him.
Declaring something can kill Hope would be declaring that God's will is absolute, and that Lucifer can never win because God wills it. It's be trapping oneself in the falsehood that Destiny can just write your doom in his book and thus it's sealed in stone, when he's more like an observer of all possibilities. Dream basically dropped a Logic Bomb Paradox on Lucifer that she can't answer to without declaring surrender.

Hope that tomorrow will be better, that no pain lasts forever, and daylight will dawn in your life again. I don't think that's how it works - what they say they 'are' in the game has nothing to do with the amount of power they have to 'embody' anything. It's a game of imagination. For every creature or concept one player thinks of, the other player has to be able to find a different creature or concept that can either kill it or just not be threatened by it. A wolf gets killed by a hunter gets killed by a snake gets killed by a bird of prey gets killed by a virus - at this stage of the fight, both of them are trying to kill each other. Then Morpheus switches tactics - he says he's a world because a virus is just something that a world contains but that can't harm the world. And Lucifer is still trying to kill, with a nova. So Morpheus is a universe - again, universes contain thousands of novae and are just not harmed by them. The step of 'anti-life' I guess has to be interpreted as not just killing all life (a universe would be perfectly fine without living creatures in it) but also everything that can metaphorically be said to have life - including stars, which can 'die'. And hope is the ultimate trump card for various reasons that have been sxplained here already (some of them specific to Lucifer, but in the original comics, Lucifer wasn't the one having this fight with Morpheus), but I believe most of it is that there will be creatures who will cling to hope in the face of anything (for reference, Morpheus's own line: What power would hell have if those imprisoned here would not be able to dream of heaven?")

Having Morpheus face Lucifer was a really great change - it creates more ''hate'' from Lucifer against Dream and it works well

The battle was well represented but I wouldn't have put Lucifer against Morpheus. I feel like Lucifer gave up too fast. For being such an ancient being, being created in heaven and reborn to hell, I'm sure she would have had something to counter hope. I am a child, deprived of dreams. This battle was too quick. Ok, it's a series. To me the best part until now is in the road diner. That's the tone of the Sandman comic. The sound of her wings should have gone further (like in the comics they should have made the woman cry out for her baby). There are some shortcuts taken for I think viewer approval. I wish they didn't do that. Now regarding Lucifer, in the comics the character is more taunting, confronting, cruel in a more vicious way, while in the series there is a politeness that shouldn't be there because Morpheus wasn't invited. Loved when he delivered the purpose of hell and the necessity of dreaming to reinforce hell. As in the comic, this was extremely well done. The Nada scene seemed forced. Haven't seen all episodes so maybe we'll get there.

@@huser365 the thing is that even those in the worst possible situation hope. There is always the hope for new life in the presence of anti life. The hope that far from now, it will thrive again. Nothing ever defeats hope. Even those who have lost hope of escape will hope for death.

@@ddy7323 didn't think of it before, but yeah that's a pretty good reason, 'cause she hopes to destroy God and killing that hope leaves her without purpose

Hope there will be a season 2 with Lucifer morningstar as the main antagonist or if not she would have at least more appearance... It's so satisfying when she's angry or like defeated
