This is what songs sound like when a poet sings them.
The song becomes more moving when one learns the story of tortured genius Vincent Van Gogh.
Doesn't everybody know that story? Julius Caesar, Benjamin Franklin, Vincent van Gogh.
This is one of the most beautiful songs you will ever hear. It is about the great artist "Vincent Van Gough" and his life all centred around the great painting "Starry Night." The song really captures his tortured life. Misunderstood in a different age, but much revered in our present time!
Dude she knows what this's about! She literally spends a good two minutes of this reaction explaining this in the end! Lmao
@@Summon256 Thanks for your patronising (names that I can't write here) However, I'm making my own comment. You now what free speech is don't you? Or do you live a communist country? Seriously!🤐
@@michaelparsons5299 Cuz you ain't paying attention at all, now you are looking for any sort of excuses, because you haven't even finished watching till the end (likely case here...) lol
@@Summon256 What you are missing here as well as the knowledge of the reviewer is that Vincent Van Gogh was not just some artist that wasnt appreciated until after his death. He was a Mentally disturbed man. Having severe episodes including his eating of the oil paints while he was in an asylum which resulted in them taking the oil paints away. Add to which ..back then there was no international social media..you were known by local townfolk alone..and if your the crazy kid on the block ranting and raving as well as alchoholic..your going to be dismissed Alot. The song is still beautiful and even more haunting a melody when taken in just how tortured a soul Vincent was.
"Suzanne", Judy Collins(Lenord Cohen)"Dust in the Wind," Kansas, "Friends, " Elton John, "Ordinary World," Duran Duran
You won’t hear songs like this anymore … a masterpiece
Ironically.
very true
Not unlike the work of the man it was wrote about
You nailed this. Perfect reaction. I’m so glad you knew what the song was about. It always brings a tear to my eye. The only painting he ever sold was one his friend bought. His paintings are in every art book, in every school around the world, and sell for millions. He never knew what a great artist he was. He never knew how much influence he would have on the world. Breaks my heart.
Name of that painting was "Red Vineyard At Arles".
One of the most beautiful songs ever . A legendary artist who suffered and put that out in his art . Don McLean understood and made this song in tribute to him . Thanks for doing this reaction .
Van Gough died poor. His paintings are worth millions today.
@@thatsnotfunnythatssick7390 Not a fan.
@@johnbrowne3950 yes, everybody knows that.
Beautiful and intelligent reaction.
AGREED. This is on my life's playlist.
Don McLean wrote a biography of Vincent in a song. I can't think of one better.
This song always chokes me up 😢
We don't know anyone that doesn't love this song. It's not only very beautiful, it's historic. Van Gough even became more beloved after this song. We love McLean even more for that.
It's like his guitar is crying. God I love this song.
This Was Tupac's Favorite Song & It Was Played For Him As He Was Passing Away...R.I.P. ❤️
As a lover of art and history this is a great song .I love to hear" Vincent". You are right so many artist were not given praise until they passed very sad.
If I were a songwriter, and I have been at times, I would be so intimidated attempting to write a song worthy of Van Gogh and his art. How can I adequately capture the beauty and the pain and the longing and the serenity of his life and work? But he sure did it. The imagery and melancholy are so vivid. It’s an all timer and I think you’re right that there’s a real sense of empathy for the artist coming from Don in the song.
Beautiful song about a tragic life. His life was so much more complex than simply an artist who cut off his ear.
Exactly what you said about McLean is the reason Roberta Flack was moved by hearing him to write Killing Me Softly. She has discussed this in recorded interviews. Another beautiful song he wrote and sang is "And I Love You So", which became a hit for Perry Como and was recorded by Frank Sinatra.
Lori Lieberman wrote Killing Me Softly as a poem after attending a McLean concert in Los Angeles. She then recorded it. Roberta Flack heard her version, made her own recording and turned it into a major hit.
"Sitting in the audience, Lieberman found herself struck by another McLean song, a heartbreaking ballad, “Empty Chairs.”
“As soon as he started singing, she pulled out a napkin and starting scribbling notes,” remembers the friend, Michele Willens. “The rest is history.”
Lieberman says she later shared her experience - and her napkin poem - over the phone with Gimbel. As he said in multiple interviews during the 1970s, Gimbel already had a song title in his notebook that seemed to click with her feelings. He took the lyrics to Charles Fox, his piano-playing writing partner, and together they created a classic: Roberta Flack’s 1973 No. 1 hit, “Killing Me Softly With His Song.”
In those days, Gimbel repeatedly talked of how the song emerged after he and Lieberman discussed the McLean concert.
“Her conversation fed me, inspired me, gave me some language and a choice of words,” Gimbel told the Asbury Park Press in a story published early in 1973.
Lieberman released her version of the song in 1972. It wasn’t a hit, but Flack heard it on an airplane and decided she wanted to cover it. Lieberman did not get a songwriting credit or a cut of the publishing that flowed to Fox and Gimbel after Flack’s Grammy-winning version or the 1996 Fugees redo that hit No. 2. That didn’t bother her. She was content with her place in pop history as the song’s inspiration."
And I Love You So is one of my favourites, what a wonderful song.
I love Don McLean, and you provided a lovely reaction to a beautiful song. You mentioned how you liked that Don McLean was able to put you into someone else's shoes... I think that one of the best songwriters when it comes to this is John Prine. His songs, Hello in There, Sam Stone, and Angel from Montgomery, all written by a man in his early twenties, perfectly capture a completely different perspective.
Yeah, Prine had that rare gift. Great songwriter.
Yes, sir! I’m gonna make it my mission to get John Prine on Angela’s list via Patreon request. It may take a few months, but it will happen!!
I tear up everytime I hear this song about Vincent Van Gough, there is a book written about his relationship with his brother Theo, and it brings this song into full view (so to speak), the name of the book is Dear Theo, you should consider reading it sometime.
It’s Van Gogh, not Van Gough
Beautiful song, wonderful artist with a beautiful voice singing this song. Lovely guitar work. Have always loved this.
The first time I ever heard this, I burst into tears. It was during an art instruction film and my instructor gave me a hug because I was the only student to actually "get it".
The song "killing me softly with his song" was written after the songwritter saw don mclean play "empty chairs" live,...... You should do "empty chairs" 👍👍
This is definitely a classic gem, great great song
As beautiful as this live version is, the recorded version has wonderful instrumentation that just adds to the beauty and melancholy of the overall song.
The other important part of the song that you didn't mention is that he also sings about Van Gogh's schizophrenia, which got worse as he got older. When he says "How you suffered for your sanity", that is what he is referring to, and the voices in his head that wouldn't go away. That is why he tried to get rid of them by cutting off his ear. Eventually, it is believed he committed suicide by a gun, as of course, in his time, there was no treatment for mental or emotional disorders. Everything you said is true as well.
Absolutely the most BEAUTIFUL song EVER.♥️ BEAUTIFUL reaction 💗
He has a way of bringing a story to life in his music.
Thank you for your lovely reaction. You are absolutely right. Vincent died penniless, yet now his pictures sell for millions. Isn't it ridiculous?
Beautiful song I used to get emotional when I was a child listening to this song. Truly art by an artist,!
Two incredible humans, Vincent Van Gogh and Don McLean. The Starry Starry night painting was on tour and luckily for us stopped at Chicago's Art Institute. My wife took my daughter and the painting brought tears to my daughter. She was a big Van Gogh admirer.
So much talent and lyrics. Many do not know what this represents.
Thank you for your response. My first wife loved Vincent. We went to Holland to see many of his paintings. Seeing his paintings up close is more than moving. The thick paint, the emotion. They came alive for me and had me in tears. Again, thank you.
People don't understand how much heart and technical skill goes into art. Visual and all the arts like music.
Van Gogh is my favorite painter. His pain was so beautifully poured out on canvas
This is such a beautiful song. I loved the album when it came out in the 70’s.
Thanks, DayOne! This is a favorite of mine... I once told my Mom she should hear it, and she thought I might be suicidal - lol! Not everyone "gets it" that it's about Vincent Van Gogh... I appreciate your appreciation and look forward to more of your reactions!
This and the BBC live version of American Pie are just amazing!Don is an excellent songwriter and storyteller. What a beautiful tribute to Van Gogh.❤❤❤
Beautiful song. Touching. Received.
A beautiful song both musically and lyrically. A great reaction too.
Beautifully haunting, emotional and unforgettable once heard. Don Maclean is a truly great artist. How do you capture Van Gogh's life as a painter and a human who suffered great mental distress. Don Maclean did this. No-one else that for me would of been able to portray the tormented beautiful soul of Vincent Van Gogh. His sacrifice of a tormented gift was mankind's great reaward. Don Maclean has a truly great voice. Listen to his version of Crying, famously wrritten, recorded and peformed by Roy Orbison. It compares to the great Roy Orbison. Don Maclean has it all. Thanks for a great reaction
Love this song. It's a beautiful poem and McLean sings it so simply and soulfully.
What a lovely tune. Just absolutely breathtaking and stunning.
I used to sing this and other Don McLean songs to my kids. This was their, and my own favorite.
People don’t write songs like this anymore. Truly amazing stuff.
This was Tupac's favorite song. His family put his song on repeat for three days hoping he would wake up. RIP
One of our great story teller songwriters, and one of the greatest modern songs ever written. A triumph.
Well, several decades later it's a stretch to call it modern when the history of recorded musical artists is so short.
The true beauty of Vincent Van Gogh is how he transformed his pain into beauty 😢.
I was 5 or 6,my parents had lots of art books and I’d disappear into his paintings. Starry night, can’t name most others but his colours, the way he slapped on the paint, I just couldn’t take my eyes off of it.
This song is such a beautiful tribute to all lost souls, it speaks deeply to what Van Gogh tried to portray, I’m in my 60s now and still cry every rtme I hear it ❤
That this still resonates is as wonderful as surprising.
Thank you
Beautiful reaction - you were obviously so moved. ❤
He is a great artist! Beautiful song! A very great reaction!
Hearing his song😮 since decades, it still makes my cry immediately
Beautifully poetic and insightful...great writing here, just great.
Such a beautiful song and Vincent Van Gogh was so unappreciated in his lifetime
One of my all time favorites, I was 7 years old when this came out and my Mom listened to it ALL the time, brings me back to riding in the back seat of her 1967 Falcon with my brother as she sang every word when it came on the radio. How I miss those days.
The early 70's such an amazing time in popular music. I was glad to have been in my early teens during that time. Gives me a place I can go when I need to ground myself even now that I am 63.
I grew up then too! Lots of us Baby Boomers were very lucky to have grown up in the 1960-1970's! Our music was and still is the BEST!
the lyric speaks to many of Vincent's paintings. there's a video that displays those he's referencing as he sings that is a beautiful addition to the song imo.
This song is a masterpiece about this great genius and so many overlooked artists, but also about mental illness. Today our cities are spaces for thousands and thousands of these individuals, who too are are discarded and left to live in their tormented worlds where no cares, and they are deftly ignored by the rest of us because they experience a reality that doesn't fit with ours.
One of my favorite artist singing about my favorite artist
I enjoyed this song as a child and I am now over the hill at 65 and well i still enjoye it. Your commentary was sweet I saw your heartstrings being tugged on. keep going. lovely Thanks for sharing.
Such a beautiful, sad, and moving tribute to Vicent Van Gough. It helps make you look at his artwork with new eyes and makes you understand and appreciate it even more. It's been said it was Tupac's favorite song.
A Famous Quote by Vincent Van Gogh... Art is to console those who are broken by life. Its a phrase I keep close to my heart.
"In colors on the snowy linen land", "reflect in Vincent's eyes of China blue", and "weathered faces lined in pain, are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand".... good stuff!
One of the best ever balladeers of our generation, along with Gordon Lightfoot. Thank you for your review dear.
He painted Van Gogh's Starry Night with words ... in perfect hue.
One of the most beautiful songs ever . I can't help but tear up hearing it.
The story and they way he sings it is just amazing.
Thanks for your review !
The song "Killing Me Softly" was written about Don McLean and crafting of his beautiful lyrics.
Great songs are always timeless. The chord change at 2:57 sets the tone.
Hi Angela,One of the most beautiful, melancholic songs ever written, Thank you Don Mclean this song has never lost it's magic & probably never will... Cheers Jim, UK 💔🌌X
After 52 years of listening to this, I still get choked up every time I hear it.
Don McLean with his artistry painted a beautiful visual picture of Vicent. What a amazing "wordsmith".
Angela, if you've never investigated famous painters of the 19th century, Vincent Van Gogh is in the top 10. Though, like many artists, in his life he never saw his art become as famous as it is to this very day. You might look at the Hollywood-ized story of his life, "Lust For Life," starring Kirk Dougles as Vincent in what was for Kirk a departure from his usual tough-guy roles.
Also, please look at one of my favorite Van Gogh paintings, "The Potato Eaters." Of course it is but one among dozens of Van Gogh masterpieces.
Thanks, Angela! Great react to Don McLean's follow-up to "American Pie."
Timeless classic! Glad you are getting to be a part of this incredible artist history of writing great songs and telling wonderful stories!
A beautiful song. As a child I knew not the background for this song.
My Dad used to sing this song to me. I'm 60. Lol I also paint quite a bit and do quite a bit of sculpting.
I used to do the Evening Shift 7pm-1am at WCDQ FM in Maine and i ended my show every night with this song
One of the most poetic songs ever written !
His painting Starry Night was the view from his room in a sanitarium
There are vids of this song with slideshows of Vincent's works. Amazing.
This artist got a song name after me, Thank you well appreciate God bless you in Spirit.
This always makes me cry.
Don McLean is a poet.
Above said very well. Magnificent work in music-almost as magnificent as the painting.
Insightful comments, dear. I believe Vincent never sold a painting during his lifetime. He became one of the all-time greats only after his death.
Imagine just a guitar and a voice. What a performance
One of all time favorite ballads.., that I seem to appreciate more & more the older I get...Poignant...Still.
I've always loved this song. It's so meaningful .. so sad .. yet so beautiful. ❤
Don McLean will NEVER be unappreciated in his lifetime. Thank you Don and thank you Vincent.
Don Mclean's music is so poetic ... he truly rivals Vincent's talent....................
I knew as soon as I heard the first verse, that song is wow.
Wonderful song and wonderful reaction…
I was fortunate to tour the Musée d’Orsay in Paris in 2016. There were quite a few paintings by Van Gough that I saw firsthand, along with other impressionist of his time.
The man was truly a genius and Don McLean’s song captures Vincent’s tormented spirit in a beautiful way…
I heard Don McLean sing this in the early '70's on my college campus - VERY MOVING. It was a very small venue, but a very enjoyable performance.
One of the very best at what she does and reactions are very worthy 👍
im glad i grew up listening to this songs and i dont have to tell myself decades later man wtf was i thinking listening to this
Another great song from the 70"s
Nearly every painting Vincent ever did is represented in the song. He was slightly insane and no one paid him any attention, his works only became famous after his death. The weathered face lined in pain was his own self portrait. Look up his paintings...they are represented in verses.
He's a poet.
I can listen to this hundreds of times. I hope Vincent knows how much he is loved now.
Excellent review, DOR. Thanks.
As a Kid, I learned what alliteration is, with this song.
You have great perceptions you 😂 Vincent is still my favorite artist
The title of Roberta Flak's famous song, "Killing Me Softly," was inspired by a live performance by Don McLean in 1971.
Lori Lieberman's excellent song "Killing Me Softly" was indeed inspired by Don McLean's performance. She sang the original version of "Killing Me Softly", one year later Roberta Flack did a cover.
There is a theory that Vincent Van Gogh had long-term lead poisoning from putting his brushes in his mouth while he was painting, and that was part of what drove him mad, and then you throw in unrequited love, and a sense of failure into the mix it's no wonder that he was a troubled person but his paintings are startling when you see them in person. The paint is caked on the canvas so thick..
yOUR TAKE ON THIS SONG IS RIGHT ON!
His paintings today are priceless & sell for millions.
