Kudos for not trashing the current cabinet set.
Agreed, they're pretty nice cabinets. It's really only the colour and knobs that are outdated, a lick of paint and some new hardware, and you'll have a nice set of modern looking cabinets.
@@volundrfrey896 AGREED! I think all I would have done with this kitchen is just painted/refinished the cabinets and the countertops and added better lighting.
I liked them! Then again personally not into the "modern" style :)
The new opening and the flooring look great. Love the cat commentary when he walked in the shot 😂

She is a very opinionated cat.
@@Iliketomakestuff Sooooo.....a normal cat then :p
The other cat seems less interested. at 16:03
I’m glad to see you saving the cabinets, they’re great to donate or put in your garage or your basement or your workshop. Most of the TV shows just smash them and I think that’s just sad...
Oh thank goodness, I was so worried they'd trash em. They're so pretty
Omg the cat in the background made my day, "food? Why? Why? Why?"
I paused the video looking for a comment, if not I was going to make one! That made me so happy! hahahaha

Yes! I’m simply here to answer the question in the title!!
Yes, if you actually know what you're doing
I saw your comment on DemoRanch
@@Unreleased-zt9th demo ranch?
Demolition Ranch
Thank you! I'm looking to redo my kitchen and was anxious for the answer to the title XD
That was a huge job... Really amazing seeing it opened up.
It is a lot of work. We're still not done, but I'm glad we can share this big transformation.
I remodeled my kitchen with my dad. We did everything. Tiled the floors, assembled and hung the cabinets, installed the appliances. I learned a ton.
That is awesome!
The interior wall may have been "insulated" for sound deadening reasons. That's my my interior floors, ceilings, and walls, are.
Scrolled down to find this comment!
@@ElmerVSworld yeah, me too!
I also can't quire tell where the dining room is in the house, but it's possible that did used to be an exterior wall, the dining room may have been more a 'sunroom', or something.
Although, I guess that would make it more a load bearing wall and not able to be deconstructed as much.
Hmmm.
Did this at my old house several years ago. Huge amount of work but worth it in the end. Good luck!!
Thanks. I'm looking forward to the end.
that cat though. We need more of him in everything
I’ve got a tip Bob. Reuse the 2x4s if you can especially if from an older house because the wood is a lot stronger.
The number of times Bob has rented that flooring nailer because “it’s cheaper than buying it.”
He probably could’ve bought it by now haha
Thank you for taking such care in your cabinet removal. Drives me nuts to see them be wasted in the reno shows.
Lipstick is really great for marking your boxes on the drywall. Just make sure it's not one your S/O actually wants to keep using.
Good call!
Lipstick is what my sister and I use. I keep a tube in my toolbox.
This was the most gentle demo I've ever seen. I guess it makes a difference when it used to belong to your loved ones and they can be reused.
Hey Bob, I’m a big fan since your early days. You’re living the dream of providing for your family by building, and also generating income from what you build. I love that you can do that and I hope you continue to prosper. Great video!
I've been slowly planning my kitchen reno. it's gonna be a huge project, taking down a wall and new cabinets and layout
It really is a big thing to think through! Take your time and plan as much as you can, while realizing that there will still be a lot to figure out during the process 👍🏼 Good luck!!
Perfect timing! I am in the process of a kitchen renovation, had contractor tear down old sunroom and rebuild room. I am doing everything else. Just finished tiling last night, on to grout then kitchen cabinets. I will be glad to have a kitchen back.
Much thanks to Bob and Josh for the goofing off in the videos. It really was a highlight to my week. Your videos are also a treat to see. Thank you for the videos.
I loved the Get Hands Dirty t-shirt cameo
Your t-shirt "Be excellent to each other" is just awesome!
Oh and yes, the video kind of too :)
Wow, what a space! From the start I didn’t think it was that big. Awesome
To be honest, I was a little surprised at how big it ended up looking :)
Well done! Glad you finally gathered the courage to start!!
Yes! Thank you!
DIY show: knocks down the cabinet, still needs to take out the 3 screws🤣
« Last room in the house that we have to renovate ». Yeah right. This just means you completed the circle, which goes round, and round 🤣🤣
Guys, I have to say that I like the addition of the little whimsy you've added in. If this is one of the subtle changes you were going to be working into your videos, I APPROVE! I enjoy seeing Bob and Josh's personalities come through. There are plenty of channels that do DIY, Maker, Creative style projects. But time and time again, I will always come back to the channels where I see personality of the individuals coming through in the story and project they're building.
Keep it up and I'll keep watching.
Thanks! We're trying.
THANK YOU!!!! Your comment about cabinet demo on TV shows vs real life was so refreshing to hear. Also, the whole segment on doing this RIGHT is great to hear. A lot of the TV shows and CZcams/Social Media posts about renovations always highlight the fun stuff and skip over the work that needs to be taken into account to do things right.
Great work!
Glad you enjoyed it!
You're insane, but it'll be so rewarding, after you get through the plywood guantlet. :D

@@Iliketomakestuff can you make a replica of a penny?
@@Iliketomakestuff is mark rober going to help you?
This is so timely Bob. I have been getting quotes for my own kitchen remodel and I just keep leaning towards doing it myself.
Go for it!
One big thing you need to calculate in is a huge time investment - I’m right in the middle of my kitchen build. Still I believe it is worth the effort!
Speaking of circuit testers, just bought a new house and picked up a tester that also has a seperate hand held unit that "sniffs" out the correct breaker. (The tester sends a signal back through the wiring that is detected by the hand held unit at the beaker panel) Saved a ton of time.
those things are so cool
Same story here. Bought a house and NONE of the breakers were labeled! Bought that same tool and have traced a couple of circuits that I've had to replace switches on. Gotta do the whole house.
Wow y’all! You continue to do amazing things and still inspire me to go out and make stuff. Excellent work!
Love the Alec Steele pants (or trousers as he might call them)! Also Josh is a goofball. I'm sure he's a fun coworker to have around.
I agree for both!
Coveting those Steele 01's as well. Ran out before I could snag a pair ;-)
Goodness, that is a lot of work, but it looks beautiful!! Im sure it helps to have a great team to help out with it!
Even if they dent the dishwasher 😉
That was a trash can and I'll never let Josh live that down
I love all of this. Great work guys! Can't wait to see what else you all have planned.
Whenever I build a new wall or rip to studs when I'm remodeling, I always insulate my interior walls. I generally use Roxull fiberwool,. I do it not for R Factor, but because it's great for sound dampening. Pink Housemeat actually has a VERY good dampening factor with only a dozen or so percentage points inferior to Safe'n'Sound. It's ALSO very useful for fire hazards, as well, as Pink housemeat and fiberwool both have really good flame retardance. My house is also plaster over gypsum lath, so I usually do double-drywall as well, and I always slather that goopy carpet glue (Roberts 3045) between the sheets. It's essentially a poor-man's GreenGlue sound sealant. I don't worry about doing a 100% job and don't sweat the "little gaps" that the pros always say "even little tiniest gap can let sound through," and they're not wrong, but if you have forced-air heating, it's moot, anyway. It really is night-and-day when I do it. It's also really great, as we have a "front of house" and "back of house" and we can seal off each side and reduce our heating/cooling burdens as only one side needs to be kept at temp when we're sleeping, and the insulated interior walls help keep that heat/cool "in" each zone just like exterior walls do.
Pink Housemeat, new band name. I call it.
💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
how arent you verified yet? 🤔
Good to hear you donate the cabinets! Nice ones. 😁❤️
Always!
I'm really like watching your videos, and getting some good ideas from.
Those cabinet doors have a really nice color and a good looking handle!
Great job guys. I love watching you do renovation projects...as renovations are the bane of my existence, so I live vicariously through ILTMS! keep up the great work.
Did a very similar kitchen reno about 5 years ago. Insane amount of work but the results are totally worth the effort. How Bob's turns out as nicely.
Amazing work, and Yes, you should definitely do it yourself. I'm really surprised that you aren't making your own cabinets Mr. I Like To Make Stuff lol.
Edit: Never mind you ARE building your own cabinets, I should have guessed. It cant be an I Like To Make Stuff video without building everything. Also if you feature a animal like that with subtitles more in your videos, then your videos will be like way cooler than they already are which seems impossible as it is because your videos are AWESOME.
Pro tip: don’t dent your boss’ trash can.
I thought it was that very nice looking fridge at first. I was relieved for him when I realized it was ONLY the trashcan.
My goodness: That flooring is GORGEOUS.
That's going to look quite awesome all finished with it opened up and the new floors!
Me: "Man, I hope Bob doesn't trash those cabinets, he better not."
[Bob does not and clearly does not approve of doing it]
Me: "Oh Bob, when will I learn never to doubt you?"
I like how in US the walls are merely an idea of something solid
As opposed to? I’m honestly asking, I’ve never seen how European walls are framed.
@@clayvansickle1 clay bricks and cement. Old houses stones and lime. Basically you're gonna have a hard time taking a wall down. In old houses the walls are sometimes up to 2 feet thick.
such great info on this topic! you guys make such great videos with easy to digest content! love it!
This is so cool!! I absolutely love renovations!
As soon as he showed that big space when they took down the wall I was like it would be such a shame to make it into a wall but then when he said theyre gonna put counters with an empty space looking in I was LIKE THATS SO PERFECT I was literally thinking the same thing 😂😂
I'm SOOOOO glad we kept it open. It's been great!
Bob: Guys, guys look, I promised you can be in my next video, so come next weekend to renovate my new kitchen.
Me: On the one hand, I am the definition of being the exact opposit of a helpful friend...

i missed seeing the cats on videos, so i'm glad i could see one here again lol and thanks to forby for making it amusing as well

This was great Bob. Really enjoyed this one. The seamless flooring around the whole house looks so nice.
Oh my god that looks so good if i renovated my kitchen it would look worse than when i started

I can't wait to see how this kitchen turns out!! Such a big job, but I'm sure it will be well worth it. So excited for you and your family :)
Great video. I did my kitchen over COVID. This would have helped me so much. Can’t wait for the cabinets
When you hate removing wallpaper so much that you just tear the walls down. 😂
I will never get over the fact that most walls in the USA are just straight up cardboard 😂😂
They're gypsum boards.
I know i was just exaggerating 😂 greeting from Germany! your videos are amazing!
New houses in Europe are also just framing and gypsum board. Sure some houses may still be made new with stone though most use gypsum boards as well. Rarely they use wood slats on interior walls. Mostly it's only siding on the outside when that type of siding is used.
i just started working with construction and man, i didnt realize how useful these videos would turn out to be, thanks bob
i recently gutted the first floor of my "new" but very much old home and they literally built the cabinets on-site and people back in the 60-70s REALLY enjoyed nails
and I also had the linoleum/staples issue and that takes forever to pound those staples down. good luck Bob!
This looks great. You guys made it look easy.
That's an incredible transformation. Looking amazing already!
Thank you so much!
Very excited about this series, about to do the same in my house!
Really looking forward to seeing how you build the new kitchen out! Great first video of the series!
Great start to your kitchen remodel and wow, it is really looking great, love the floor! Looking forward to following along with this project!
WOW! Fantastic job.
Looks great top job can’t wait to see the end result 👍👍
For the drywall cutting I often use a thing called "hole-in-one". Its a 2-piece magnetic plate with a hole in the middle for a holesaw. Simple stick the first piece in your junctionbox, then your drywall and then just drag the second piece along the drywall, until the magnet snaps in place. We have round junctionboxes in Sweden though. But it works everytime.
The soon the be kitchen turned out great btw! 👍👍
I can't wait to see how you built the cabinets. From material choices, to finishing, accent details, and how you chose to hang them. I look forward to seeing the shop go full cabinet maker mode.
I'm in the middle of that massive undertaking right now. That video will be out soon!
I'm going with IKEA carcasses, and probably replacement doors and drawer fronts from other manufacturers to fit.
Man I get pumped when I see I have a new video from you.
Really excited to start seeing some of these videos, after hearing about it all on the podcast.
You are doing an awesome Bob and team (but then, you always do!)... keep up the good work!
Thanks so much!! I'm really excited to finally have some videos to share about the process!
We have begun to renovate our kitchen partly because you have inspired me and let me think I can tackle something like this myself, Thank you and I appreciate your videos.
I'm so glad! Good luck!!
The timing on this video is great! I'm finishing up the design drawings for my kitchen renovation. Taking out a non load bearing wall to expand a useless tiny kitchen into the hallway in a very small house, and will be fixing a nightmare of electrical and plumbing that was all done wrong. Entire thing will be gutted to the studs, as well as opening up the ceiling and floor. Your remodel looks awesome so far. Will be following in your footsteps soon.
I've been watching lots of kitchen reno videos, there seem to be two schools of thought on flooring beforehand, vs flooring last. Any reasoning why you chose beforehand, flooring the entire space just to cover it up with your cabinetry etc? Love your channel! Keep up the good work!
I can't wait to see how it turns out! Really looking forward to the next video!
Coming soon!
Great vid guys! Love these big builds. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out.
Thanks! 👍
Pro tip when you have a demo job like that. A roofing rake normally used for shingle tear offs make short work of subfloor removals. It gets under it and gives you good leverage. Just another tool for the toolbox. Another thing that helps with demo is dont crush or break up the sheetrock of you can avoid it. Use a magnet to find screws and pull all the screws you can find then rip it off. May take some time but you save it in the cleanup. Makes less mess and larger chunks are easier to clean up and dispose of. Another Pro tip is if you have textured walls and are doing a renovation try and save some of the old textured drywall you are removing. so if you ever need to patch part of the house you only have to texture the seams and not the middle of the patch. Its looking awesome so far cant wait to see the next video. Keep up the quality work.
Wow! This kitchen went from nice to amazing.
I've been considering taking this project on, and watching this was very inspiring! Great video, and many thanks!
Wow, that empty space looks so huge and light filled now.
Can't wait to see, what the actual new kitchen will look like.
And cudos to you, for not just trashing the old cabinets. I've been in situations, where I had to move into appartements with a bare kitchen room and couldn't possibly have afforded putting a new one in myself. Never mind going through the hassle, of then getting money for it from the next renter.
Other people's 'trash' quite literally was my 'treasure' at times and it always saddens me, to see people throwing away perfectly servicable stuff - even irrespective of sustainability and all that.
honestly, the one thing i really got out of this video that i didnt know was in the protion where you mentioned that home depot has a project calculator. thats something i didnt know and thats INCREDIBLY helpful to me because im bad at estimating the material i need.
Love how you are going to save the cabinets! So many times good stuff sent to landfill cuz people are lazy or makes for "good TV".
The clip with your son kicking the wall, reminded me about the days, where I helped my dad. That made me happy
I know how these things go with starting and then changing plans partway through... My parents have FINALLY finished renovating their entire house (interior) after they started with tiling it all which also lead to removing the popcorn ceilings, repainting all the rooms, redesigning the kitchen and redesigning the master bath.
It's one of those things when cleaning a room out and then going "well, now that we have that work done... we could do..." And also changing those things that my mom has wanted to change for years and years... :-)
Can't wait for the second part to this
Can't wait for part 2!
It looks great already!
14:03 The cat is surely the most fun thing in the video with the little dance at 10:47.
Great video btw !
HEY team thanks for all the content you guys create. It makes my day everytime i see a new upload and teaches me new things from a field i never thought i would be interested in. :)
Thanks so much! That's awesome to hear!
Thanks for sharing this. It's encouraging that you got this much done in so little time, but man it looks like a lot of work. I know from making stuff myself that these condensed collages hide so much of the labor and time!
I'm wondering if you still have to deal with the gas lines.
Bob you are the best love that you tell people proper safety
Hard to find words to say about the renovation and the editing. Professional, neat, clean, neither to much nor to less.
I did quite a few kitchen remodels when I worked for a cabinet shop and we always installed the cabinets before the flooring.
I would love to get more detail on leveling the new cabinets in an “older” home! Walls are not 100% level and square so putting cabinets against that is a common challenge
With the base cabinets, make a separate toe kick base. Level that first and the cabinet install is easy.
Man, that looks fantastic! It's like you planned to have this wood floor throughout or something. ;)
:) Thanks Bruce!
I love how almost every video I watch in US (maybe Canada too) is all studwork and drywall. It makes things so much easier. Here in the UK we are getting there but it's mainly all brick with thick plaster over the top
Ikr? Crumbling plaster and, well, 'stone hard' bricks are so not fun, when hanging cabinets and stuff 😆.
In the last place I rented, I had to make do with big standing shelves, because the walls in the kitchen basically started disintegrating, as I tried to drill into them.
Imagine just being able, to put nails or screws into your walls...
Totally digging this! Appreciate seeing y’all not destroying everything in sight
I'm really looking forward to this mini series
That looks really good, nice job.
Great video. Thank you for not taking a sledge hammer to everything! I worked in demo for many years AND the sledge hammer was almost exclusively used for concrete, brick, block, etc. unlike every other video/show you watch where it's used for everything including removing wall paper it seems haha :) Saving the cabinets is also an awesome move. Can't wait for the next video, good luck the rest of the way.
