  • Jason Schappert discusses the upcoming FAA Remote ID regulations coming into effect on September 16, 2023. As with any significant change, the drone community finds itself divided on the issue, with concerns ranging from potential privacy invasions to enhanced pilot privileges. While recognizing the limitations of Remote ID, notably its broadcasting range, it's crucial for all drone operators to acknowledge its impending enforcement and adapt accordingly. Check out the full video for a comprehensive breakdown, ensuring you're both informed and compliant.

I am a part 107 SUAV operator. I got my 107 thanks to Remote Pilot 101 (Thanks Jason!...which reminds me it's time to study for my retest soon). I have an older drone (Yuneec H520) that does NOT have a Remote ID module. I have bought a Drone Tag I will install. I understand the pros/cons of having "commercial" (i.e., Part 107) operators comply with this (I'll put it under professionalism...I know many will disagree. Peace). My biggest beef/concern with RID are the fixed wing RC flyers. I recently got back into flying fixed wing RC (have a couple large Horizon "foam" aircraft). I live in an area that will most likely NOT have a nearby FRIA, but will have access to some rural farm land. I will therefore purchase the new Spectrum RID module (although it is my understanding I may have a long wait for it to arrive). Back to my beef/concern. I feel it is NOT a significant improvement in the National Air Space to REQUIRE hobby pilots of fixed wing RC aircraft to have RID. It is a hobby with an LONG impressive safety record. The new requirements will likely force people out of the hobby, or mean they will not choose to start if they have been on the fence about trying it. RC flying has long been a "gateway drug"(?) for those aspiring to a career in aviation. I myself never got to follow through on that aspiration (although I'm considering a Sport Pilot's License at the ripe old age of 62), but certainly don't want this pathway to flight to be made more difficult for those who wish to walk it.
Thanks for all you do Jason. Best wishes to the Remote Pilot 101 and MZEROA family.

I think remote id is kind of like what happened to CB Radio licensing. They tried licensing the radio operators and there was so much resistance, it just went away. I think that remote ID modules will fade away. I don't even know where to get one of these $50 modules that the FAA proposed. Jim

This is actually a question. Did the rules change or did you incorrectly say "all" drones?
I do however disagree with placing a tracking device on innocent people.

Hi Jason! Thanks for sharing this message and I want to weigh in as a female Part 107 remote pilot. I very much appreciate you discussing that we can be "tracked" via bluetooth or wifi and that the frequency levels are somewhat low. There has also been speculation by some that it will be difficult to track our drones when we fly above 200 ft AGL, which I hope is true. I support RID, but not the tracking component as it opens the door for harassment from the public. As a woman PIC, I have been approached a LOT over the past 6 years, mostly by men, who do not approve of me flying in their area. Many people are uncomfortable with drones, especially if they see one over their property or near their property and they approach me to complain or threaten me. I wear my neon Drone Pilot vest to help discourage "walk-up's", but that doesn't always work. What should be a simple 10-15 minute photo shoot turns into an educational session on what my rights are under the law to fly my drone - a total time suck! If RID serves to help the public find me quicker, this is a concern, especially if I'm by myself.

Living in a more conservative area with people terrified of conspiracies, I’m afraid of some crazy person tracking my physical location and trying to harm me because I’m legally flying a drone within the line of sight / camera view of their property. If I am harmed, I can’t send the bills to the FAA (if I live to tell about it).

You can defend yourself, legally. And, if they harm you or your equipment, press charges. Destruction of an aircraft in the USA is a felony.

FAA is going to have to delay the requirement to a later date, sometime in 2024. The demand exceeds the supply, and the manufacturers are not able to manufacturer all the remote id's that are currently needed, in a timely manner.
    Thank you, Jason.

There's no excuse for tracking the whereabouts and actions of innocent citizens particitating in a wholesome hobby that has proven safety record. Let alone broadcast that information to the general public. While they call it "broadcast only" you can be sure that this information will at some point be distributed via wireless networks and logged. The whole principal behind RID is flawed, and only aims to criminalize honest people.

To be completely honest the new regulations over the past few years have driven me away from from flying for fun. They have taken the fun away from flying and pushed me back to my desire to fly manned aircraft which is where I have found you. Unfortunately just like everything else the cost has made it prohibitive… Recently I have decided since I have 30+ years of experience with various forms of Model Aviation and about 15 years of Photography experience I might as well make some money and while I took the test and passed and even went through the process of getting through the application process, I’m still waiting on my card since I had to file a paper application I get no temporary certificate. 2 Months, 3 days and counting… Enough about me though… I feel Remote ID has the potential to be dangerous for drone operators even if they aren’t doing anything wrong. Some people have such a problem with drones in general that they are not willing to hear a operator out and willing to bring harm to them. I feel it would be better if it were only available to pilots, CTO’s, the FAA, and maybe LEO’s and not the general public. I also feel like commercially produced drones should have it for sure as I feel that is where most of the problems started and remain in my opinion. I also feel that commercial operators should only need one remote id module for non compliant commercial drones that they operate. It’s really starting to feel there is an alternative plane and safety is a possible side effect of remote ID.

As part 107 though the extra cost sucks, although if there weren't so many jackasses out there breaking rules blatenly this might have never happened. So long as it continues to allow more freedom (bvlos, night flights), etc I can go along with it. Alum.

@@RCOverKill there are dumb pilots, but this won’t fix it. And when this doesn’t fix it, they will try something more invasive. So they made a remote operator license. We resist this and we can win. We can get them to do something that isn’t intrusive, and might actually work.

I’m generally in favor of remote ID. Problem is ALL the certified add on modules are back ordered and impossible to get by the 9/16 deadline. Therefore I’m grounded and out of business until I can get a $200+ module. I’m also not understanding why a unique module must be associated with each legacy drone for part 107 pilots while recreational pilots can associate a single module with multiple drones. This is a substantial cost for part 107 pilots that seems unnecessary.

    • @W5LMP
