    Absolutely love your channel - great balance between narrated sections and opportunities to just sit back and take in the experience! This episode is one of my favorites as you can tell that the racing instincts are kicking in and you sail the boat harder than otherwise. Would love to see you also doing small "tutorials" sharing some tips and tricks (e.g. maneuvers, sail trim, navigation, communication / coordination etc.) 🙌

    Love that you guys smoked the cocky French cat! Also want to say how much I appreciate the way you encourage each other while sail handling and maneuvering. I hear lots of "good job" and great job". This is something my wife and I always try to do. We've heard too many couples yelling and blaming each other when things go a little sideways. This can only make things worse! We wonder how miserable their marriages must be in general. Keep up the good vibes on Sweet Ruca! SV Matcha

    Hats of for Team Ruca! Being faster than a 55 outremer in those conditions wind being from behind most of the time the Outremer should have been a lot faster I think. Go monohulls!

    That is awesome! Your sail was apparently almost all down wind and you beat that Outremer sled on a race that long. If it were an upwind race you would have beat them by something close to a day. You two know how to make cruising fun while keeping your sailing skills well honed. That International bottom paint must be amazing too.

    TAKE CARE!! 😉😉😊😊

    • @SailingSweetRuca
      @SailingSweetRuca  Před měsícem +2

      Great question! There is only one small island between Gambier and Amanu/Hao that it is possible to stop, and it is a difficult stop at a supply ship warf with lots of surge. The rest are too small, can’t be entered, or are restricted French military sites (there was atomic bomb testing at some). We would love to stop and explore all of them, but our visa limits our time here.

    I had a solid blue color like that as a spinnaker on my Nacra 6.0 catamaran. It was one of the first catamarans with a spinnaker so after using it for a while, I realized that it wasn't the best cut and was trying to figure out what cut would be a better fit for a boat that went much faster than a monohull but didn't have the money to get a different one so I sold the boat and got a Nacra 5.8 and plus it was a much tamer boat to handle. The 6.0 was a beast and I wasn't heavy enough to sail it.

    • @SailingSweetRuca
      @SailingSweetRuca  Před měsícem +1

      Nacras are beasts! Fast and fun! The last time I sailed one I went around the forestay on the trapeze. That one hurt a bit :-)

    • @robertlaird6746
      @robertlaird6746 Před měsícem +1

      @@SailingSweetRuca I told myself that I wanted to sail around the world one day as soon as I had enough money to do it and actually forgot about that dream till one of my friends reminded me that I had said that to them. I got busy at work making money and now am ready to do it but the economy is really bad and I really do think that these high prices will crash. When the crash happens, that's when I will get a Mumby Cyber 48 like Sailing Life on Jupiter has and sail around the world. I've already sailed across the Atlantic on a 165 ft. gaff rigged schooner called TeVega that is now called DEVA after it got remodeled.

    i'm curious to hear when you compare notes with the big cat.

  • @deerfootnz
    @deerfootnz Před měsícem +3

    I have observed many times that "performance" cats often don't seem to average speeds over longer distances that I would expect. On my own monohulls I frequently average 200 mile days and the Outremers and HH's etc don't seem any faster. I sailed from Fii to New Caledonia last year leaving at the same time as two Outremers. I put half a day on them on what was a rough, windy trip. Similarly I have out distanced cats on the trip from Tonga to NZ by a similar margin.

  • @gertboerman3666
    @gertboerman3666 Před měsícem +3

    The 55ft cat didn't catch you on a downwind passage. That means they are poor sailors or you guys are still true racers.

    • @SailingSweetRuca
      @SailingSweetRuca  Před měsícem +2

      We think our friends on the cat are fine sailors, but the conditions favored us a bit, medium winds of about 10-12 knots average and a deep angle was favored. That is one of the spots in the polar chart where we can out perform. If it was a 500 mile beam reach it would be a different story, we wouldn’t stand a chance. Upwind and downwind we seem to be able to hold our own with the cats. We all had a fun time and it was great we arrived close together!

    I so dislike spinnakers. Since the days of going head-to-head with a Flying Dutchman and seeing them scurry like ants every time the wind changed a little bit, while we just went wide onto a charging broad reach. And then the regs changed so they actually put spinnakers on the Tornado. Couldn't believe that one.
    If I ever retire into a keel boat, it will have two masts and a square sail with yardarms on the main one.

    While I am Not Personally a fan of Sailboat Racing - due to the negative influences it continues to have on the design and Construction of Cruising Sailboats - excessively Deep Drafts, lightweight hull Construction, Twin Rudders, hazards like Main sheet Tracks in Cockpits etc - I’m Rooting for the Monohull - because Catamarans Hate Me ! While tacking to Windward, it is impossible for both Hulls to connect with a Wave at the same time, and the Result is a violent Corkscrew Bucking Bronco Motion, which seriously does my head in, and almost threw me over the side of the Catamaran - and I haven’t been on one since, so Kick Some Serious Ass Guys.Bob. 🤔🌟🌟🌟🤡🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇬🇧❤️🤣
