Homeless Man Lives in a Tent Camp in San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles

  • As I walked into a homeless camp in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, Mark had kind of surprised and happy look as he said, "Hey, I know you. I watch your show." Mark went on to thank me for Invisible People's important work.
Today was the first time I was recognized at a homeless encampment, and I have to admit, I got a little emotional. The highest level of praise that means the most is what homeless people think of Invisible People. Homeless people are the true experts. I spend almost every waking hour working to help homeless people in some way. Their opinion means the world to me. Mark, when you read this - THANK YOU!
Mark lost his business in 2008 and shortly after that, he lost his home and everything else of value. Mark says he put everything into his business but a few contractors didn't pay while the debts piled up. The business was forced into bankruptcy.
Mark was then out on the streets scared to death. There is no manual for homelessness. One day you have a safe place to sleep and the next you have no idea where you are going to find food and shelter. You're homeless!
Mark worked for 42 years and now can't get a job anywhere. Mark says he cannot get anyone that owns a company to even talk to him. Searching for employment is all automated and computerized. Mark tries but he never gets a call back for an interview. Mark says that's how it's been for the last 10 years and now he's at an age where he cannot do the work anymore.
Mark says there are lots of places that promise help but only a few nonprofits that actually do provide help. Mark ran into Eric Montoya who heads outreach for LA Family Housing [lafh.org]. Thanks to Eric's continued dedication to helping our homeless neighbors and support from LA Family Housing, Mark now has a housing voucher. What that means is soon, he will no longer be homeless.
When they need money, Mark makes a cardboard sign and stands on the freeway exit asking people for money. Mark says it's humbling and embarrassing but he doesn't know what else to do.
When I asked Mark about the police taking his stuff, he responded, "they only took stuff that I really need". Mark says he believes in the police but it's as if they have a personal vendetta against homeless people.

    About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, a living wage or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

Failure is rarely due to only one bad decision, it's a string of bad decisions we make that ends up badly for us all. He made his story simple so we could understand his pain. I'm 66 yo and at my age, I'm sure there is a lot more he's not talking about. The truth is not what he is saying, its everything he's not saying. In there lies the truth. Then one day god forbid they do need our help now they want to ask for it. We won't turn them away but what about when we were trying to raise money to start the company and now you need our help. I wish that people who do have - will share. Share your $5. coffee money a couple times a week with those who are on the corner with the cardboard sign. @keecefly I cannot make a concise judgement as I cannot visit where "Mark' is at to see for myself .I do not even know where he is at . It was my opinion based on what Mark had said .
Even "if" the Police are concerned about fire, they should also be concerned about a person staying warm . Maybe Police should get a fund going for the homeless and make sure they have top of the line sleeping bags , Mylar Blankets . There ARE battery operated heaters . Sounds like a good idea to me .!
I have camped with propane heaters before without issue. I could understand them not allowing a campfire. But to take a heater that Mark bought and is 'his personal property' to keep himself warm just because the Police "think" it may cause a fire is thoughtless , cruel and uncaring. We care about animals being out in frigid weather and will receive warnings about the temps dipping down into the teens and please bring your pets in. But what about PEOPLE ?
Also, I have known people who have lived at shelters in CA. If you are a senior citizen and get SS, half of that money will be taken by the shelter. So , how can you save money with deposits and all, for a small Apartment ? Plus, a lot goes on in Shelters that is dangerous, your few personal belongings get stolen and many do not want to risk it and feel safer elsewhere. Also, Shelters usually let you stay only up to 90 day and then you are thrown back out onto the Streets where you came from in the first place.!!! Its a vicious and cruel cycle . Only a few make it onto the housing Lists which are incredibly long . Peace.

I'm 69 and fully retired. I grew up in the San Fernando Valley. As a 10 year old boy moved there in 1961 into a tract of houses that hadn't been built yet. Only 3 models surrounded by dirt terraced hills. Our small boxy 3 bedroom two bath house cost $13.5 K. Now its up to $750K (we put in a pool, retaining walls and landscaping). Its a beautiful neighborhood now. Its a shame to think of how wide open it was in '61 and how the people that lived there can't even find a place to live now. Shocking and shameful.

Emily that's what I was wondering. He said he moved to L.A. after becoming homeless because his daughter is there. But then no mention was made after that of what's going on with that situation. Why can't him and his wife stay with their daughter? Can she help them with money? Can't they at least use the shower at her place? I love this channel, but I just don't get why Mark never just asks those questions to make it clear.
This man is a saint. Imagine he was your father in the same city as you and he was homeless and you had a house or apartment. What could the possible reasons be of why you couldn't help him? Isn't that an important question to figure out if you're going to do an interview?
I'm not trying to criticize. It's just that this video was heart wrenching. I know he's sitting in that tent right now and feeling bad, and then I'm just going to be left wondering all day why his daughter in L.A. can't help him. It's just really confusing and painful.

As much as I love listening to these stories, I hope to god that they paid him for this interview otherwise they're just making money off of people who literally have nothing. I've been where he is. I've slept in doorways and tents and had nothing to my name except for what's on my back. My life was like that for 3 years until March of this year. I honestly think I would still be in that situation if I wasn't a female. People are more likely to help you as a young female, I also had my dog with me. Now my dog and I are so thankful to be indoors. Things aren't perfect, but man did being in that situation humble me. I will never let a change in lifestyle cause me to lose sight of what's important. I still think of those I met out there who still struggle, I come back out often and help them. I can't change the world, but if all of us did a little something, whether it's giving a few bucks here and there, a meal, a coffee, water, handing out gloves, hand warmers, blankets, during the colder months. It doesn't take much to help people. Be kind guys. He's right, most of us are just a paycheck or two short of being where he is. Living indoors doesn't make us any better of a person.
