Homeless Man Lives in a Tent Camp in San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles

- As I walked into a homeless camp in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, Mark had kind of surprised and happy look as he said, "Hey, I know you. I watch your show." Mark went on to thank me for Invisible People's important work.
Today was the first time I was recognized at a homeless encampment, and I have to admit, I got a little emotional. The highest level of praise that means the most is what homeless people think of Invisible People. Homeless people are the true experts. I spend almost every waking hour working to help homeless people in some way. Their opinion means the world to me. Mark, when you read this - THANK YOU!
Mark lost his business in 2008 and shortly after that, he lost his home and everything else of value. Mark says he put everything into his business but a few contractors didn't pay while the debts piled up. The business was forced into bankruptcy.
Mark was then out on the streets scared to death. There is no manual for homelessness. One day you have a safe place to sleep and the next you have no idea where you are going to find food and shelter. You're homeless!
Mark worked for 42 years and now can't get a job anywhere. Mark says he cannot get anyone that owns a company to even talk to him. Searching for employment is all automated and computerized. Mark tries but he never gets a call back for an interview. Mark says that's how it's been for the last 10 years and now he's at an age where he cannot do the work anymore.
Mark says there are lots of places that promise help but only a few nonprofits that actually do provide help. Mark ran into Eric Montoya who heads outreach for LA Family Housing [lafh.org]. Thanks to Eric's continued dedication to helping our homeless neighbors and support from LA Family Housing, Mark now has a housing voucher. What that means is soon, he will no longer be homeless.
When they need money, Mark makes a cardboard sign and stands on the freeway exit asking people for money. Mark says it's humbling and embarrassing but he doesn't know what else to do.
When I asked Mark about the police taking his stuff, he responded, "they only took stuff that I really need". Mark says he believes in the police but it's as if they have a personal vendetta against homeless people.

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, a living wage or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

Poor guy. Very articulate and respectful. Glad he has his dignity.
He will try to hold onto his pride, but he hasn't worked in 11 years--why?
@@robertdavis3433 Well, he did explain that despite his skills, people won't interview him, and now he can't even do that work anymore, but I think that after 42 years of working, he's able to go eleven years without working, and I think he'll wind up finding work again soon.
@@robertdavis3433 Have you ever tried working a job without a private bathroom to clean in daily?? I have and it's not an easy thing to do! At all.
Also once you get over 45 or so you are less likely to be considered against many more younger applicants, again this is from personal experience.
Been homeless in PA since 2015. (Been homeless on and off since 2007)

@@debraallen63 Debra ,the thing I don't like about his story was, it is too simplistic. He blamed everything but himself. Failure is rarely due to only one bad decision, it's a string of bad decisions we make that ends up badly for us all. He made his story simple so we could understand his pain. I'm 66 yo and at my age, I'm sure there is a lot more he's not talking about. The truth is not what he is saying, its everything he's not saying. In there lies the truth. I've had many good jobs in my life, only my last big career choice at 35 yo stuck. U have to zig when they zag, and always believe in your ability to land on your feet. I do feel badly for your situation. Find a way to heal.
i like he is not in denial about his own situation, i can feel is pain
He has hope yet.
I’m glad I’ve watched this homeless man, he has helped me change my mind about people living in the streets. Bless them all, for whatever reason they out there, suffering in the cold without anything.
We all need to know this can be any one of us...help if you can if you are able...May God bless you.
beautiful disaster so true!
Thank you. This is what we are trying to tell people about our company. Like one day this could be you but they don't want to donate or buy a shirt because we are not known. Then one day god forbid they do need our help now they want to ask for it. We won't turn them away but what about when we were trying to raise money to start the company and now you need our help. People rather support gofundme or Kickstarter about technology then a company trying to do good unless they are known. It's sad.
Actually no it can't. I'm 65 and have gone through some shit in life, including addiction. I never came close to living on the street.
We all need to know this can be any one of us OH Bullshit, it cannot be me or millions of others. Sick of hearing this stupid statement every time I watch a vid about homelessness.
Yeah because your "god" is gonna help. Lmao. Wake up
Another example of how many decent people fall into homelessness
So many people NEVER recovered from 2008. I'm one of them. I never ended up homeless, but my life took a nosedive and things have never been the same since.
I wish Mark and his wife the best. Sometimes you can make all the right decisions and still have a bad outcome.
This can happen to You or someone in your family! Compassion in this world seems to be gone.
What a wonderful sincere gentleman I wish you the very best of luck at his new home
4 years later, I hope He's in a Home stable now!
What an Awesome Man humble and kind🌷🌷😊
Very dignified, and articulate man. Not fair. He will be in my prayers!
I really liked this video.
My heart aches for them.
I try to help as best I can. Food, money, radios, clothes, toiletries, cigarettes, rides. A lot of times I just sit and talk with them.
I can only do so much... some of the guys I see on a regular basis are extremely mentally ill. It’s hard to see a way out for them. I have no professional training and am physically and financially limited myself. If anything, I get too close to these guys and need to set better boundaries. They have my number and aren’t afraid to use it.
I feel for them because I know them 😢

No one wants to be home-less. Yes, most of us are just one or two paychecks from serious problems that could take what we have or what we are still paying on. I wish that people who do have - will share. Share your $5. coffee money a couple times a week with those who are on the corner with the cardboard sign. Talk to them - they are human as you are and acknowledgement means a lot. Care about others and share what you can.

My $5.00 coffee is a 20 oz Hills brother can that last a month or two. Living so far below my income and investing keeps me so far away from living paycheck to paycheck. I dont believe most people our 2 pay checks away from being homeless
What a lovely man. Definitely deserves better
the world needs a hand up, lay not your treasures in things that rust and rot or carry mold, but rather the eternal treasures, love kindness and charity.
I wish the billionaire and millionaire pastors were aware of this fact; because if they did they would use their billions and millions to help the poor and needy. Instead they are buying 65 million dollar jets and multi million dollar houses and yachts.
Mark keep the weariness going you're doing good work these people are amazing and we are all the step of being homeless ourselves he's absolutely right the awareness is the answer for change
The Police took his heater??? !!! I am from CA. originally and even in CA., it can get cold at night . But they don't want him to be warm ! SO SAD ON MANY LEVELS. Even if he had a solar powered warming blanket or a battery operated 'elec' Blanket , they probably would have said that was dangerous too. Upsets me. GLAD he has a voucher and that hopefully he will find a place soon.
Lorie P. So true Lorie. It's absolutely disgraceful
Yeah they want the homeless problem to disappear i.e die. Absolutely disgusting.
Lorie P. It’s like something out of the nazi SS isn’t it...doing that to another human.
This world has got extremely wicked.
@@susanbrown2909 Well, pigs are fulfilling their true mission. Oppress the poor and uphold our decaying capitalist order.
@keecefly I cannot make a concise judgement as I cannot visit where "Mark' is at to see for myself .I do not even know where he is at . It was my opinion based on what Mark had said .
Even "if" the Police are concerned about fire, they should also be concerned about a person staying warm . Maybe Police should get a fund going for the homeless and make sure they have top of the line sleeping bags , Mylar Blankets . There ARE battery operated heaters . Sounds like a good idea to me .!
I have camped with propane heaters before without issue. I could understand them not allowing a campfire. But to take a heater that Mark bought and is 'his personal property' to keep himself warm just because the Police "think" it may cause a fire is thoughtless , cruel and uncaring. We care about animals being out in frigid weather and will receive warnings about the temps dipping down into the teens and please bring your pets in. But what about PEOPLE ?
Also, I have known people who have lived at shelters in CA. If you are a senior citizen and get SS, half of that money will be taken by the shelter. So , how can you save money with deposits and all, for a small Apartment ? Plus, a lot goes on in Shelters that is dangerous, your few personal belongings get stolen and many do not want to risk it and feel safer elsewhere. Also, Shelters usually let you stay only up to 90 day and then you are thrown back out onto the Streets where you came from in the first place.!!! Its a vicious and cruel cycle . Only a few make it onto the housing Lists which are incredibly long . Peace.
I pray for the homeless every day and night. I don't have money but I pray every wish is granted by our God in heaven.
May there LORD protect them and deliver all they need.
GOD BLESS YOU AND THEM IN THE MIGHTY NAME OF JESUS

My dad used to say when we would see those in need "There, but for the grace of God, go I." It wasn't condescending, he would almost cry when he said it. He was right. You can do everything right and still have stuff happen. Many people lost their businesses in 2008 during the great recession. he had subcontractors not pay him. What a precious and handsome man.I hope he finds a cozy home to live in.It breaks my heart to see this lovely man go through what he has had to endure.
I'm 69 and fully retired. I grew up in the San Fernando Valley. As a 10 year old boy moved there in 1961 into a tract of houses that hadn't been built yet. Only 3 models surrounded by dirt terraced hills. Our small boxy 3 bedroom two bath house cost $13.5 K. Now its up to $750K (we put in a pool, retaining walls and landscaping). Its a beautiful neighborhood now. Its a shame to think of how wide open it was in '61 and how the people that lived there can't even find a place to live now. Shocking and shameful.
Good man..
Praying for Him too..
Made me cry😢 He has so much sadness in his eyes. Why doesn't his daughter take him in?
Emily789 probably has a mean, arsehole husband who controls the money.
Emily that's what I was wondering. He said he moved to L.A. after becoming homeless because his daughter is there. But then no mention was made after that of what's going on with that situation. Why can't him and his wife stay with their daughter? Can she help them with money? Can't they at least use the shower at her place? I love this channel, but I just don't get why Mark never just asks those questions to make it clear.
This man is a saint. Imagine he was your father in the same city as you and he was homeless and you had a house or apartment. What could the possible reasons be of why you couldn't help him? Isn't that an important question to figure out if you're going to do an interview?
I'm not trying to criticize. It's just that this video was heart wrenching. I know he's sitting in that tent right now and feeling bad, and then I'm just going to be left wondering all day why his daughter in L.A. can't help him. It's just really confusing and painful.
Julia Reed Or, Maybe his daughter is a rude selfish twat. You don’t know the situation so don’t let your man-hate dictate your ideas.
Rumpel Stiltskin yes, you’re right. That could also easily be the case too. I’ve just seen a lot of women controlled by mean stingy men and that was my first thought. But you’re absolutely right.
There is alot more to his story than we know. Why has a daughter not helped out dad or had she and dad just cant be helped. 12 yrs is a long time.
There are so many aspects to homelessness which are so, heartbreaking. I have learnt about them ALL from watching these videos. I imagine that it is also hard for Mark, when he interviews all of these people and is unable to save them, all. I feel so SAD sometimes, when I hear these stories. You can see how the homeless people are sometimes just TIRED with a self esteem that is beaten down. Thanks Mark, for making us all, aware.
Love your good work brother and best wishes from Ireland you should come to Dublin Ireland sometime it's crazy the homeless problem I'm currently homeless myself and I'm currently living in a 2 man tent finding it very hard to get through the days, especially this days so close to Christmas In not even sure if I will get to see my three children that's the hardest part take care and God Bless

If a cop has a voucher to take them to a real home/appartment for 5 years then they shouldn't take peoples only shelter and essentials that they need to survive. Shameful conduct. Love your interview with Mark. He's a nice man. 😍👍🏼😍

It's call move some place else why stay in the same city having a vocher only gives you 90 days he just said he rather be outside then live in some of those places ok enough of his story he could change his life by moving there are many states where housing is cheaper and jobs it's all about choice
@@lynneprice8463 EXACTLY. Life is all about the choices we make. Back in 2006 I was about to become homeless, could not find work in Georgia to save my life. I filed chapter 11, locked up my beautiful home and drove all the way to Canada where I was able to find work paying me enough to dig myself out of the hole. I had to live in my vehicle while I worked 24/7, but I managed to keep my home and today I am set financially. I made the choice to get out of my comfort zone and face the great unknown completely alone. Not completely, I had Jesus.

There’s a woman who sleeps under the 101 off the shoup exit going north. She’s always alone. I see her every night when i get off work at 9pm walking back and forth before she lays down on the concrete covering her entire body under a blanket to sleep. I’m so curious about her and her story. I’m a young female and i get scared approaching homeless people even though i feel so inclined to. Please try to speak to her if you can!
I don't think I can get that far west this trip but I would love to join you to go meet her if I could

Chances of a homeless women being bad is slim. But handing out money is not the best idea. Unfortunately we live in a country where being homeless is a slow death sentence
You should approach her during the daytime with a friend if that would make you feel more comfortable. Take something for her. Even something as simple as a pair of socks I’m sure would mean the world to her. Good luck!
As much as I love listening to these stories, I hope to god that they paid him for this interview otherwise they're just making money off of people who literally have nothing. I've been where he is. I've slept in doorways and tents and had nothing to my name except for what's on my back. My life was like that for 3 years until March of this year. I honestly think I would still be in that situation if I wasn't a female. People are more likely to help you as a young female, I also had my dog with me. Now my dog and I are so thankful to be indoors. Things aren't perfect, but man did being in that situation humble me. I will never let a change in lifestyle cause me to lose sight of what's important. I still think of those I met out there who still struggle, I come back out often and help them. I can't change the world, but if all of us did a little something, whether it's giving a few bucks here and there, a meal, a coffee, water, handing out gloves, hand warmers, blankets, during the colder months. It doesn't take much to help people. Be kind guys. He's right, most of us are just a paycheck or two short of being where he is. Living indoors doesn't make us any better of a person.
You have a beautiful soul. God bless you.

Andrew Yang is running for president. One of his policies is to enforce a Universal Basic Income of $1,000 per month for every American adult. I don't understand why he didn't get a job working with cement in 2009 and 10 when construction started picking up. I hope he and his wife make it. Good video From Sacramento

I'm from Sylmar in the SFV. I'm so sad about what it has become! It was such a great place to grow up, look at it now!
Good luck!!
I wish people would love thy neighbor as thy self.
This man seems like someone who just needs to catch a break and get back on his feet. This is exactly why I am saving for my rainy day. I have lived thru homelessness once and that was enuf for me. I was helped by someone who sneaked money to me and through a couple who ran a small church. Without those, I would probably be dead and buried in Mississippi. I really pray this couple gets a hand up soon.
Hell's favorite NPC #69OU812 . why do you always put things in a male vs female stand off? Don’t be mad at me because you don’t like Nancy Pelvis! I think people who are homeless due to economics need a hand up, speaking from experience. People who are homeless due to addiction need rehab or to quit on their own if they can. I don’t give homeless money unless I know their story and that’s to pay it forward for the help I received. So far, I only know of one!
Hell's favorite NPC #69OU812 . Many times at this age, people cannot see the screen or stand over a grill all day or walk safely on all that grease. Burger King is a good place for kids to work but not after a certain age. Many times they cannot shower daily or shave, and that’s a big no no for the workplace. Please don’t lump ALL homeless together. Not all are out there by choice. I know. It has nothing to do with feelings. It is knowledge and experience, something you still are acquiring as your life continues.
He had a good business and he had money, just shows it could happen to any one of us. Grateful for what I have
Look at that, 441-people liked this post, and 11-people employed by the Government in San Fernando clicked thumbs down because they don't like it when people see THAT THEY DON'T DO JACKSHIT for the Homeless.
This man is a shoe in to be a manager at a Good Sam Park, or a national park ranger!
Totally can relate to what he went through. It is truly awful.
This is a prime example WHY we need to worry about our US citizens who are living on the streets. Stop looking over the boarders to feel like your helping. we have plenty of needy people right here in our own back yards!! HELP THE HOMELESS IN THE US!!
This guy is awesome
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼God help this man !
God bless.
We all are 1 step away from homelessness. You loose your job tomorrow uou be in the streets 3 months . So sad. God bless all these men an women out on these streets

It's called pick your self up
GREEN STEEL USA,LLC unfortunately everyone is not taught about things like money management. When people think of retirement, they think of a 401K that most jobs don’t have. They don’t think of Roth IRAs, CDs, Bonds or anything else.
A lot of people actually don’t know about those options. It’s why I decided to change up my Facebook page in 2020.
Poor man’s eyes are dead in his head . ❤
