So probably the most frustrating part of the survival show for me was when JYP scolded BangChan for writing Helevator in a "female key" and encouraged him to change it. The thing is, JYP had intentionally stayed away from SKZ to let Chris make authentic, uninfluenced decisions, so he didn't know what any of the members were capable of, whereas Chris picked the members himself and was partly responsible for their training, so of course he wouldn't write Helevator for them in a key they couldn't sing. Han Jisung is a vocal beast, and Chris, having worked with Han looong before the creation of SKZ, was well aware of that, but JYP only expected him to only be a rapper because that was his official title at the time.

  • @Nathalie_Loves_HanJisung_03

I love how much Stray kids can experiment with their music because they have such control over what they make. It just makes their music so unique and special because you know that they’re the ones making it. And yes, Maze of memories came out in March of 2019 and had the same instrumentals as the OT8 version which was released in 2021. The only difference was that they split Woojin's parts amongst themselves.

You’re right ‘Hellevator’ was a predebut track. Actually it was their first mission during survival show. JYP told them to write their own song and if they like it they’ll make a MV for it. It was in 2nd or 3rd episode. After this song Lee Know got eliminated and several episodes after Felix got eliminated too. So when they made this song and MV they did not know which members will debut. Even though Bangchan choose the members, JYP said that if a member lacks skills he will eliminate them during this show. Fortunately in the last episodes JYP said that they feel empty when 2 of the members were missing. He said that they already feel like 1 team and if someones missing, it shows. During this time Felix and Lee Know worked hard too and they proved that they worth it. They both improved so much during the show and Felix learn Korean better since JYP eliminated him for his Korean being bad.

    • @aliciapark6241
      @aliciapark6241 Před 2 lety +25

In my opinion Bangchan also fought for them behind the scenes and brought them back. When Felix got eliminated he says ‘’I’m not gonna leave you behind’’ and he didn’t

I’m glad JYP made a wise decision. Felix have a lot Stays collection by just this phrase “cooking like a chef I’m a 5 star Michelin” and nowadays he goes collecting new Stays by “Maniac….”

    • @i.1800
      @i.1800 Před 2 lety +5

@@linayumi2266 I agree. Changbin said that “Felix is our treasure. He is our treasure.”. Actually I believe he plays a big role in their group dynamics too. HAN was asked about “there would be no Stray Kids without him” and he said Felix. Hyunjin also mentioned that Felix’s positive mindset and pure heart makes every hard situation better. They often mention that if Felix is happy the team is happy. They say that he is their happiness.

    • @ashurasama
      @ashurasama Před 2 lety +5

I personally didn't buy the eliminations at all, it was just artificial drama to make the TV show more interesting. While the boys were certainly not aware of it, I'm fully convinced that it was an agreement between JYPE and Mnet that they had to eliminate two people and bring them back at the end. I understood they would come back the second they showed Lee Know's video message in the episode after his elimination, because basic storytelling is that you stop mentioning any character that's become irrelevant. Also, the fact that JYP would willingly eliminate two of the best dancers of the group is a bit ridiculous.
I of course find the idea of emotionally manipulating the members for the sake of TV somewhat repulsive, but hey that's a Mnet reality show, and they've done much worse to trainees on other occasions.

  • @RM_formerlyjustRMbutYTsucks

    - 11:30 Opening lines of Side Effects are actually Seungmin in his natural bari glory, but it's a common error to think it's Felix. 😃
    - 14:40 Chan's hair isn't permed. He has naturally very curly hair; he just almost always straightens it. This Side Effects hair is his natural curls partially straightened. When it's completely untouched, he looks like a cute dandelion puff.
    - 15:04 Yes, that's really them screaming. Iirc, Hyunjin also screamed in this, but I can't swear to it (and yeah, now I remember I.N being mentioned too, but I can't find my old verified source for either one). Whenever you hear moans, screams, laughter, growls, yells, etc, it's THEM.
    - Fwiw, SKZ live are incredible, full stop. But Side Effects live, in particular, has some epic stages. And Chan and Versachoi tend to remix songs for large shows, sometimes so much that it's basically an entirely new song. So several Side Effects lives, including the two different vampire stages, are not only worth watching someday because SKZ are next-level when live, but also because the song has been changed up enough that it's notable.
    - Yes, Double Knot and Side Effects are both from the Clé era. Clé is "key" in French. Side Effects is from the middle album of the Clé trilogy, while Double Knot is from the final one (Miroh is from the first one). None of them are repackaged. The one and only repackage is IN Life (the Back Door album), which includes an entire album's worth of additional material and is the middle album of the God's Menu-era trilogy.
    - Double Knot was a single to lead into (and then became a promoted b-side on) the Clé: Levanter album, so it's not really a title track in terms of album inclusion. But SKZ spoils the hell out of us with videos for more than half of their songs. And I honestly think that probably 80% of the time, their b-sides are better than the titles. They use the titles to lure in the largest possible audience and _then_ hit them with the full SKZ effect.
    - 28:20 After native speakers Chan and Felix, Seungmin is the most fluent English speaker, yes. He's fully comfortable in it, used it as an ASC host, and is kind of the fallback speaker if Chan or Felix isn't taking the lead in English interviews. Next are Hyunjin and Han, who have two different versions of borderline between conversational and fluent. Then Binnie, who's been rapidly improving lately. Then I.N, then Lee Know, neither of whom is all that interested in knowing more than enough to get through fan calls. People will misinform you that "Seungmin learned English when he lived in LA." He was there for a few months as a young child and learned the basics; his proficiency is from continued study and effort up through adulthood. (Ditto for Hyunjin, who also lived in the US for a short time as a young kid but only doubled down on the English learning a couple years ago and is now focusing on it in college.)
    - Yes, the instrumental is the same on both the ot8 and the nine-member versions of Maze of Memories.
    - Another fwiw: there are also 3RACHA versions of Double Knot and Maze of Memories. Double Knot is one of the original 3RACHA songs that was expanded into a full SKZ version. Maze of Memories' lineage is a bit more convoluted; it wasn't released as a 3RACHA track, but 3RACHA have a partially different set of lyrics for it and have used it as one of their live stages, and Binnie used part of it (encompassing the lines and segments of about half the members), with different lyrics, as part of his cypher. So it's kind of a 3RACHA-origin song that didn't actually release through 3RACHA first but gets cycled through the group. Anyway, a lot of early SKZ songs started life as 3RACHA songs, and both versions are out there.

In Side effects it was Felix's real voice in that super deep part. He does go that deep. I don't remember if you have already seen "victory song" - he is super deep there as well. And Bang Chan is naturally curly, as some other people in the comments pointed out.
Double Knot was released as a single - does it count as a title track then? I don't know. Anyway, this is the last song/MV you see Woojin in. They also have a performance video for the English version of "double knot", and it is already without Woojin. He left in October 2019, and SKZ had to postpone the release of their album "Clé: Levanter" (with the title track called "levanter") to re-record the songs. Later on SKZ have re-recorded almost the whole discography and uploaded it in the albums SKZ2020 and SKZ2021 - this is where the OT8 versions of older songs come from, so they are basically the same songs, just Woojin's lines are re-distributed.
"maze of memories" was first released in 2019, but it actually originates from a 3racha pre-debut song from 2017, which they slightly modified and made longer to fit 9 (and later 8) member group. 3racha performed the 3racha version live at kcon in 2019, please check it out in your free time, maybe off camera if you want, because it is fire: czcams.com/video/APEve7bn7EY/video.html
From all the members Lee Know and I.N can barely speak any English, but everyone else can speak more or less. Chan and Felix are native speakers, Han and Seungmin are fluent, Hyunjin and Changbin are Ok (they can express themselves, but need time and miss words sometimes). Han has British accent, Seungmin and Hyunjin rather American, Changbin, Lee Know and I.N have Korean accents. They all can sing in English though - they have English versions for several songs. Changbin usually has such a powerful and fast rap, he must be struggling the most when they do the English versions :)

Great reactions. fun fact... Bang Chan has naturally curly hair no perm was needed. Woojin left Oct 25th 2019 so any videos before then will have him in them. Stray Kids has an all English version of Double knot and is only the current 8 members in the m/v. The song sounds amazing either version. the 2nd full album No Easy was also an album that was named for the haters. No Easy was a play of of the word noisy. The stray kids lore is complicated. It does deal with keys and alternate universe or worlds. If your are interested there are videos out there from fans that have a good idea on the lore of stray kids. It is interesting to watch. Thanks again for your time loved the reactions.

    - Yes, Hellevator is their first predebut release. To clarify, though, it's not the _only_ predebut release. There are two more videos (Grrr and Spread My Wings), and a total of seven songs on the predebut album (titled Mixtape -- there are a LOT of things called "Mixtape" in the SKZverse, so if you go looking, it's specifically the album and only the album called Mixtape).
    - The original Korean version of Double Knot (the one you pulled up) is the last video you'll see the former member in. His contract was severed about two weeks after that video released, so there's a decent chance his departure was already in the works. He was cut out of the next video (Astronaut), and the imminent album was delayed to remake what needed remaking to remove him. So Double Knot is the only song on the Cle: Levanter album that includes him, and the title track (Levanter) is the first ot8 title track and the first video they actually filmed without him.
    - They released a video for the English version of Double Knot later, in tandem with the release of the first of the two albums that contained all their nine-member songs remade into ot8. The English Double Knot video is ot8 (it's a dance-centered performance video, as opposed to the original MV).
    - When Hellevator was made (September 2017), all but one were teenagers:
    Woojin 20
    Bang Chan 19
    Lee Know 18
    Changbin 18
    Hyunjin 17
Han/Felix/Seungmin 16/17 (it was made at basically the same time as their three birthdays)
    I.N 16
    - They were mentally, emotionally, physically exhausted, stressed to the point of breaking, sleep-deprived, and going through absolute hell when they made Hellevator -- in the space of about one week. The lyrics are indeed about what was happening to them _right then._ This was the midst of the survival show, they were fighting to stay together, and every single one of them was teetering on the edge of control.
    - SKZ has a lot of songs that directly or indirectly address mental health, self-care (and -harm/neglect), uncertainty, all the tribulations of growing up, and so forth. The only "concept" they have, in terms of the tradition of groups having a concept, is basically "this is an experiment; it's never been done before; watch us grow up and struggle and learn and share it with you, both the good and the bad." That hazy concept combined with them being the producers equals them having both the freedom and the real-time life experiences to make the majority of their work somehow connected to internal/personal growth/challenges/failures/fear/strength/survival/etc. Even stuff like Thunderous is literally "this is us, and we're not gonna change to suit you."
    - Hellevator is also them being all-rounders from day one. Five people rap (Changbin, Hyunjin, Han, Felix, Lee Know). Six people sing (Seungmin, Woojin, Chan, Han, I.N, Changbin). And you'll see that includes designated falsetto angel Lee Know rapping, "dark rapper" Changbin hitting the sweet final notes, and -- most iconically -- "I'm just here to rap; oh sh1t, they just made me an ace" Han handling the C5s.
    - The ending shot of Hellevator just hit you with lore. Even unsure whether they were going to debut, they started the storyline in Hellevator, and it's continued to this day. That city in the sky -- City Jungle -- is indeed also referenced in Maniac. You also saw it from within when they overthrew the system in Miroh. You've also now seen both versions of the two sets of SKZ who exist within the parallel universes in the main Korean storyline.
    - Side Effects, Miroh, Hellevator, District 9, Levanter, Double Knot -- these (along with plenty of other vids, trailers, unveils, highlight reels, etc) are all lore-heavy. They're overflowing with repeated visual references (it's hard to notice most when you're new, but the two moons, the keys, and the red/blue combination are pretty easy ones to start with). And both parallel universe versions of SKZ appear on screen -- and even in split-screen -- in Side Effects.

stray kids only put out music that is true to their essence, and that comes with downsides on k-pop because the general public in south korea has a very specific niche type of music they go for. that said, their songs being entirely theirs and them having control over what they wanna convey has propelled them to a much greater audience and they more then compensate the lack of korean support (even tho that these day's they are getting popular there to). they are very very succesful saleswise and chartingwise when it comes to the international panorama, ODDINARY was actually #1 on billboard 200 for albums on it's release, competing against popular US artists like Lil Durk and even the likes of Rosalia who's a very upcoming trendy artist.

ah! i sat down for lunch and i was so happy to see another skz post! i loved the ones you picked this time, theyre some of my favourites. you should listen to some of their more ballad like songs, its crazy how good the vocals are when the rap is this good too haha

double knot was released as a digital single after side effects so it wasn't really a title track! after double knot promotions, woojin left the group in the end of oct 2019, then stray kids released a new album called cle levanter in which double knot was included as a bside! check out levanter, it's a beautiful song!

I always find it funny how chaotic Side Effects is. That music screams anxiety. Yet somehow their main vocalist with honey voice has the most lines in it :D

In Side Effects, I believe all the screams are I.N., apart from the one at 13:48 and the slightly less loud one at 15:23, which are Chan.

Loved your reaction to the KZS. Thank you!!! I mean it... Loved your reaction.
JYP, let BangChan (who trained for more then 7 years often watching his friend either debut or leave the training program before the KZS came into existence)choose his members and this group believes in tackling themes (dealing with emotional difficulties of growing up and seeking your dreams but from the complications aspect) is not often condoned in most Asian cultures and this is the same for Korean culture, especially Kpop. Heck in most cultures around the world discourage honest conversations about mental health or being different from what society deems is correct.
"Maze of Memories" was a pre-debut subunit (3racha) song that was rewritten for the entire group of Stray Kids.
Each song from the get go that they created (3racha- BangChan his hair is actually naturally curly trained for more then , who writes most of their beat tracks, Changbin and Han our lyrical genius' ) is meant to touch both emotional heart cords and to relay what it's like to be a young person ANYwhere growing up in the world. It's part of their international appeal and they also have a thing of crossing age, gender and racial boundaries in their fandom (Stays) because these themes are Universal. There are many songs that other members have contributed to or written outside of the trio. We Stay are one very spoiled fandom.... Happily spoiled.
They love experimenting with musical styles.
Note: if you have a computer that is Windows based, you can look backwards or forwards by clicking on the "comma" or "period" keys when you are looking for details.

By the way, Chan's hair is naturally curly) he didn't do a perm for Side effects era)

  • @Akkarri

JYP, seeing the lyrics to Hellevator: "Do you think the process of being a k-pop trainee is hell?"
    Changbin: "Yes, STRONGLY."
Yep, they literally poured all their feelings into these lyrics.
Also you can see some members only got one or two lines in this song. That is because it's pre-debut and the more ready members got more lines. Han is singing and rapping like he owns this song cause he was genius at this point already and JYP praised him the most.

stray kids have some really unique and experimental songs like 'the tortoise and the hare', 'maze of memories', 'side effects', and i hope you check out '3rd eye', it might be the most unique song in their discography. '3rd eye' became my favourite skz track of all time.

3rd Eye is a trip, and I love it! It's on my long list of criminally underappreciated/underknown SKZ songs. Plus, I mean, the live stages of it have the iconic chair dancing, which makes it even better!

I'm excited for 3rd Eye, I've seen a lot of people mention it in the same sentence as TTATH and Maze Of Memories. That'll probably be in part 4 lol

Double knot is one of my top tops too, but yeah, can't really place them in any order, depending on my mood, but their music is 🔥 and probably my top ten are all SKZ lol...

Technically there’s 4 members in skz that are fluent in English. U already know about chan and felix. But Han was raised in Malaysia and went to an international school so he’s fluent. Seungmin studied English and lived in La for 3 months. He’s also fluent (he was the one you asked about).
Out of the other members hyunjin can also speak moderate amount and his pronunciation is good too. The rest of the members speak basic English (although they have progressively improved as of recently) but they all understand it really well.

Thank you for reacting for the songs. Maze of Memories is one of my faves and it's so 3racha song, like not just because they wrote it, and not just because it's all rap but it's just 3racha vibe plus if I'm not wrong the only times(few) they performed this song was just by 3racha

A lot of the earlier songs are super emotional and Hellevator has some lovely images and striking lyrics. In particular the MV back then was not as fancy like the newer ones but I actually enjoyed the meaningful scenes it had especially the field running scene makes me emotional every time... Side Effects was one song that really really highly impressed me. Its disturbing raw and turbulent, something I never expected from a kpop boyband at all. You should definately check out a live stage to that song.
And for Double Knot: It's such a good song overall. plus the choreo is insane...tbh at this point SKZ rules my whole workout playlist and more.
I shouldn't recommend any song because most are good and will be recommended anyways by other people. xD But I have to admit "I am You"/"Domino"/"Secret Secret" hold special places in my heart. Enjoy the ride which is SKZ! 🔥😊
