I saw Gary Moore play with Thin Lizzy at the Sydney Myer music Bowl in Melbourne Australia in 1978 and to this day is still one of my all time unforgettable gigs I've seen, absolutely right up there. ☆
Gary, like Jeff Beck, and a select few others, was a Guitarist's Guitarist. His tone, touch, dexterity, and most importantly feel and soul were a thing to behold. Joe does Gary a disservice here by saying Gary only had one setting/speed...which is nonsense. What made him SO great, and perhaps unique, was his ability to switch from Peter Green esque beautiful melodic moments, to absolutely ferocious speedy outbursts, all within the space of a couple of bars. Normally, (Hello Yngwie!), guitarists with great technique tend to want to show it off ALL the time. Gary was nothing like this. It's also commented on that half an hour solo's are hard to listen to. True in 99.9% of cases...but in Gary's...not so! When he solo'd time seemed to stand still, and he would NEVER get boring. He was THE man!
He wasn’t referring to his tempo... it was obvious to me that he meant by “one speed” he meant he was always locked in, always perfect. Maybe a poor choice of words but these misunderstandings happen due to imperfections in the English language. To believe you know more about Gary than Joe does is ignorance in my opinion.
Gary Moore stands above every guitarist I've ever seen, and for many reasons. One, he easily intertwined blues, jazz, classical, and rock into his solos, making songs his and his alone, because no one could copy them. Not necessarily for GM, because he's gone, but for music fans who might get to listen to his work if he were better known. It's rather irritating to many of us.
Chris we know oodles of guitar lovers, and the only conclusion we can come to as to why he's not recognized and people like Lennon are, is politics. Rolling Stone has Hendricks as number one. Thanks Joe for the kind word's for my guitar hero. Gary... And also the mention of Walter trout.. As when i listen to him, i here a little of Gary's tone...Oh and blue's rock is what he was and what he orig always wanted to do..
I met Gary Moore in the early 80s at the Detroit Airport when I was in the military headed back from leave. We took a Polaroid picture and he signed it to. Good 👍 guy and great rocker. RIP
Two totally different styles but two equally gifted guitarists. SRV was so raw and soulful with those heavy strings where as Gary could sing but absolutely shred . love them both . Neither one was better than the other, just different styles.
FOLKS - it is 90% the guitarist, 10% the guitar that makes the sound. As a guy who has played for over 40 years and owned all the great guitars at one time or another, I can tell you that its the guitarist's ability that makes most of the difference. Great guitars add a little bit more, maybe sustain or particular tonal balance, but mostly its what happened between fingers, pick and strings that counts. Rory had a unique style that would have been his on any guitar.
Gary Moore soloed with more intensity, emotion than anyone at the time. Then srv got big because he to played with such an intense passion he drew you in to the moment. If you have watched as many srv concert videos as often as I have you'll notice when Stevie realizes he's repeating himself the emotion in his face leaves and he then starts looking at the band to either end or let's go to a verse.if you saw Gary Moore at the fender 50th anniversary show and saw Gary at the end of the show play red house by Hendrix he played with such intensity, emotion for so long and it never got boring. The way he worked the volume on that red strat changing the tone by his picking technique was masterful.joe b. doesn't play the same style as Gary. Joe Bonomassa style is more technical influenced like Eric Johnson in his phrasing and scale positions that he uses. Nonetheless Joe bonomassa is an exciting player, intense just different than Gary and srv .Joe bonomassa is the future of blues rock in the world right now. The way he sold out all those venues in Europe in that short of time says something about his mass appeal .God bless Europe for supporting him America has its musical head so far up its back side I don't believe a record company would even sign a blues artist. Joe Bonomassa has made his own way in this muck of a music business. Check out the BCC live over Europe that Joe and Glenn did.fantastic. trying to keep classic rock alive as well. Keep it up Joe! That's my take after 40 yrs of playing
Leon Thompson I agree with you. I saw Gary with Thin Lizzy many moons ago, and at that time GM was just part of the band but with amazing talent, as well as his bandmates. Fast forward to 1997. I saw Joe B. in a three-piece band at a blues festival in Ohio. Nobody knew at the time JB was to be the player that he is today!! I guess my point is that every musician has someone or something that influenced them at one time in their life!! I've played guitar in many bands in my younger days, and my influences were the late 60's to late 70's guitar gods. Take care!
people like him and SRV don't want to mention Clapton...Which is an insult because if you're into Blues he has to be in your list as well as Peter Green.
@jim lennon, What are you talking about as far as people like SRV don't mention Clapton. And which it being an insult? The last show Stevie ever played was with Eric, the two were best of friends. Stevie took the last seat on the helicopter that night. That crashed with three members of Eric's entourage. Eric, and Stevie, both admired each other very much. So, I don't know where you got that impression? And as far as Bonamassa not mentioning Clapton? (Joe Bonamassa Quote:) "As far as actual playing, Eric Clapton by far is my biggest influence, and you can tuck Jeff Beck underneath that" ++Silence Is Golden++
Interesting to see & hear a Joe Bonamassa interview, he seems like such a normal & humble guy . Once he puts his suit & sunglasses on then straps on his guitar he turns into a God!
Nice to hear him talking so well of Gary Moore. No one is as good as Gary was. He changed Thin Lizzy's sound much for the better as did John Sykes. But Gary Moore,so fckin awesome. Biggest loss for me out of all the rock stars....along with Lemmy of course lol.
I'm not a fan of Joe. Sure he can play alright but for me there's something missing. Can't quite put my finger on it though. But since seeing this interview i have a higher opinion of him as a person. Never be as good as Gary ever was,he was too amazing
True no one will ever be as good as Gary Moore, Gary was the finest player ever. Gary had a FEEL like no other guitarist and that is the thing missing in Joe`s playing, Joe can `play a guitar` but Gary played with his soul.
Jeff Healey and Gary Moore were the best imo. In their own league above the rest. Blues chops with sophisticated melodic phrasing at the highest level. It just flowed effortlessly.
Gary Moore was one of the best, from Skid Row, Thin Lizzy, his solo stuff al;l great writing nand playing Joe knows his stuff and he talks very kindly of Gary, I met Gary in Hartford Ct, back in the day on tour with Def Leppard. he was a true gentleman no big head like many others..... RIP Gary....
Gary was the real deal bar none. Had the ultimate control from the slightest touch of the strings to full out in a moments notice. In one song not sure have seen that kind of control from other artists very much.

Nice shout out to Dave Hole! Local boy (Perth) done good. I used to watch him at the uni I went to at small shows in the tavern. Unbelievable slide player.
He forgot to mention Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, and Robin Trower, but it's a long list. :) Gary Moore, in my opinion, still is the very best; very hard to match up, even for Joe, who is exceptionally great. Cool thing about the blues is that there is plenty of room. I like them all.

I met Gary Moore in the early 80s at the Detroit Airport when I was in the military headed back from leave. We took a Polaroid picture and he signed it to. Good 👍 guy and great rocker. RIP
The raw power of a GM solo - only SRV can match it.
Two totally different styles but two equally gifted guitarists. SRV was so raw and soulful with those heavy strings where as Gary could sing but absolutely shred . love them both . Neither one was better than the other, just different styles.
Gary Moore taught me more about guitars than anybody I know 🌟
I seen Gary Moore in 85 at a small club he had the best people to play with
Bull in a china shop approach to playing the blues. Love it. Good call out to Rory too. Nice one Joe.
I saw Jimi Many times and Rory but Gary was the best, I've been playing for over 55yrs and I give up,
Half a hour solo from Gary was blissful perfection to the ears!!!
Joe Bonamassa, one of the nicest and most genuine guys in the music industry. A rare find.
Well said brutha..
Take care!
Right on, one note said more than a hundred that Malmsteen could do ,all about emotion
Joe Respect Sir For Your Thoughts.
I saw Gary at Wolfgangs before it burnt down. Greatness!!!
Joe used to carry a Les Paul they called "Gary Moore"
Dave Hole gets a mention - australian slide guitarist
supported gary in england
@@nigelmartin4703 I saw dave hole about 15 years ago in a pub in Sydney - pretty gritty and amazing performance.
You guy's have Taj Farrant now.
@@g4joe yes we have, but Taj is still developing, it’s anyone’s guess where the kid will be in 10yrs.
people like him and SRV don't want to mention Clapton...Which is an insult because if you're into Blues he has to be in your list as well as Peter Green.
Way down the list, very over rated!
Interesting to see & hear a Joe Bonamassa interview, he seems like such a normal & humble guy . Once he puts his suit & sunglasses on then straps on his guitar he turns into a God!
Gary was the man, still is
Nice to hear him talking so well of Gary Moore. No one is as good as Gary was. He changed Thin Lizzy's sound much for the better as did John Sykes. But Gary Moore,so fckin awesome. Biggest loss for me out of all the rock stars....along with Lemmy of course lol.
Totally agree dude, Gary can not be re placed, Sykes changed Lizzy and Whitesnakes sound...brilliant guitarist!!...but Lemmy is Rock n Roll
I can't stand Bonamassa, like you said, sure he can play, but he's like a low fat mayo version of Gary.
Gary couldn't stand Joe Bonamassa ! FACT ! In fact he brushed him off and told him to 'keep trying kid' !
Jeff Healey and Gary Moore were the best imo. In their own league above the rest. Blues chops with sophisticated melodic phrasing at the highest level. It just flowed effortlessly.
Stevie Ray Baby! Thanks and rock on Joe! You are Badass keep it real.
Check out modern prog and technical death metal. Better yet, check out Segovia and other classical players.
@@fredriksvard2603 Thanks! will do..
I grew up listening to G~M ...Now in listening to J~B....They both Rock the Blues.
Joe is an awesome musician and its great he shows respect. Makes Joe even more awesome
Dave Hole? He's The Best slide guitarist I've ever seen. And the best people outside of git heads like myself never will hear or see.
Have you Justin Johnson and his shovel or Ariel Posen?
GREAT WORDS FROM A GREAT PERFORMER ,ABOUT ANOTHER GREAT PERFORMER ....WOW !!!! GO JOE ...WE WANT TO SEE ANOTHER ""G-3"" WITH SATRIANI AND STEVE VAI ,AND JOE BONAMMASSA .....I WOULD BUY THAT ????
Gary Moore a fellow Belfast musician... he was an incredible talent.
one speed? he could destroy most with one note
John dawson winter the 3rd. Also rocked the blues with equal intensity. And long blues based solos when gary was rockin in thin lizzy.
Honourable mention due !!!
Lets not forget.
Still love listening to gary.
I remember when he covered
Shape of. Things.
Check out live in detroit
Not positive of year 95 perhaps.
He carried the torch all thru those years as did johnny.
Miss them both.
Both influential in a big way.
fantastic guitar hero , J'm old guitar man but J always loved his style of playing
He mentioned Dave Hole , back in the late 70s n early 80s we used to go check out the Matt Taylor/Dave Hole blues band at the White Sands pub in Scarborough West Oz!!Awesome Blues man Dave Hole,ol Matt is a slick Bluesman, who owns the harp,ya think a freight trains comin down the track
Rory and Gary, my guitar heroes
Same here
It "We" had Roy Buchanan! Who influenced Gary Moore...a lot
Also Jeff Beck was stunned when first heard Roy
After Stevie Ray Vaughn I would say Gary Moore is the second best blues guitarist to grace this planet
Gary is better. Mike Bloomfield Jhonny winter etc Stevie is good but ehhh
For me its gibbons, albert king, muddy waters. I dont think technical skill equates to greatness if its not used to make something interesting.
A Bull in a china shop ! Well said !
Sometimes I think Gary was born with a guitar in his hand.
There’s a video of Gary Moore playing Red House live - stunning.
Joe used to bring a Les Paul on the road 'named' Gary Moore. This was before Gary passed away! JB's a fan.
Nice shout out to Dave Hole! Local boy (Perth) done good. I used to watch him at the uni I went to at small shows in the tavern. Unbelievable slide player.
He has a sound i had been looking for. I play with his influence.. took me a long time to find what I feel in a sound...
Gary Moore - amazing guitarist! Exceptional!
I'd listen to both, anytime...
Joe bonamassa is top guitar player
We have Peter Green man
Joe is in the top tier of guitarist currently out on tour.............................always on the road.
Gary Moore’s tone was THE greatest rock/blues tone EVER. No one matched his tone.
Gary Moore muscled up on guitar better than any other player I've heard.
PlayerX Clapton, etc couldn't shine gary's shit. hit records don't make a better player
Who is Eric Clapton?
On that long list of blues greats should also be Johnny Winter.
Johnny Winter=Man's Game!
Guys like you always Forget, that there would not have been a Gary Moore like that, without Jimi.
