I see Notion more as a wiki with database function and Evernote as a note-taking application and simple document management system. Notion is not good for managing my invoices and other documents, but it is good for planning projects and other things. This is also possible in Evernote but there it quickly becomes cluttered because the structure with stacks and notebooks is too limited.
Evernote has currently gotten some new features like tasks but that is far from what a task manager like Todoist can do.
In the end, we will always use several different applications. I'm not going to try to find one app that replace them all, because that won't work.

I'm using Evernote for a long time and started to use Notion two month ago. Notion is really nice but has an critical issue when working in the field: If there is no mobile network available Notion is useless. Notion definitely needs an offline mode like Evernote. Than it is the final killer application to Evernote.

I've used both Notion and Evernote (EN). I think this comparison misses some pretty big factors for those deciding on which app to use.
    1) EN has handwritten note capability (on the iPad). Notion does not.
    2) EN has a far superior clipper.
    3) EN has built in OCR for documents (in addition to being able to handle documents better).
    4) EN works offline. Notion does not.
Also, a little context. Evernote became stagnant a few years ago because it had different versions of EN on different types of devices. Programming design changes had to be done multiple times over for different devices (which was a nightmare). However, EN went to a unified platform last year. The unified platform actually took away several features that EN had (making for a lot of unhappy customers). But the updates since the introduction of EN's unified platform have been coming *very* fast. EN looks *very* different from when it did just a year ago.
Looking at those updates, it's clear that EN is coming for Notion. Evernote is becoming more customizable with each update, a hallmark of Notion. Notion (and several other apps) ascended while Evernote stalled and sorted out its fractured platform problem. That is clearly resolved now, and it looks like the elephant is charging. From my perspective, I see that Evernote will replicate what Notion is doing right far more easily than Notion replicating what Evernote is doing right.

R C - Thanks for this info. It's very helpful. It's also reassuring to know that Evernote is upping their game.
I am a writer and I really like Evernote and most of my planning and outlining is done on it. However, I wanted to try different apps, namely OneNote and Notion, to see what they have to offer over Evernote, because as you said, Evernote was getting stagnant.
What other similar apps do you use?

    • @rfcesq5474
      @rfcesq5474 Před 3 lety

@@ChannelNavin For paper-like handwritten notes, I use Noteshelf. I just like the feel and simplicity of it, and you can sync it to EN (as images, not as note further editable in EN). However, there are several different handwriting apps out there (Notability, GoodNotes, etc.). So there's a lot of competition in the space to suit your preference.
There is an app I love call Cardflow+ which is an index card creating app with handwriting (flashcard apps are common, but not with handwriting). I love making and moving around cards on a "board" in the app, creating separate boards, etc. It's great for creative writing. HOWEVER, the support for this app is questionable, and I would not overload it with too many cards or rely on it without some backup. I really wish there was another app that did this same kind of thing so I'd have a choice, but alas...

@@rfcesq5474 another positive of your chosen tools is that publish your Noteshelf notebooks to Evernote so they can be on hand and referenced all within Evernote if you should need it.
That is also one of the major strengths of Evernote, that of its broad options of integration with other apps/utilities/services.
Much like DropBox, it might not be the new kid on the block with all the wizz-bang bleeding edge hot newness, but it is so very easy to use, offers truly positive utility, Plays very well with others, and tho it isn't perfect it shows its value and has earned a place in the stash, IMO.

For me, with Evernote’s latest updates there’s no reason to go to Notion.
If I put things into tech terms:
Evernote is like the iPhone - it’s expensive and doesn’t always have the latest features, but once they launch nee features is almost always perfect
Notion is like an Android phone - open the box and setup for hours before one can use it, then spend the next 4 weeks refining/ redoing the settings, but it has a lot of features that Evernote doesn’t
But I’ve gone for Evernote cos I cannot afford a week to work out the setup in Notion and months to perfect it , I just want to unbox then use it

They were all interesting in their own right. If I absolutely had to go with something else, it would probably be Zoho. But with that being said, I still prefer Evernotes search and offline capabilities.. Next year, as my subscription gets closer, I will examine a couple of other apps to see if there are any contenders.

However, I do agree that their search functionality needs to be improved, and that's why I came back to Evernote when it comes to to-do tasks and simple lists. Now, I focus my Notion attention on my notebooks (I'm a teacher and also a student), resources, and research. I am still trying to figure out what to do on my pdfs, because Evernote really excels at this, but I am not willing to pay the price.

    @tadpoleontheweb Před 3 lety +8

I was an Evernote user for many years. Over that time, I learned a lot of techniques got a good system going for my needs. I still think it’s a perfectly solid application.
But probably like you, I am always on the lookout for other solutions. Notion intrigued me. As I dove deeper into its features, I realized there was a much deeper core that belied its simple UI. And that’s why I have a hard time making an apples-to-apples comparison between the two.
My opinion is that Notion’s true killer feature is relational databases (tables, lists, galleries, timelines, calendars, boards). If you don’t know or care how databases can work for you by structuring your data, then sure, figure out what you like and don’t like about each application’s basic note-taking feature set and choose one-or both-based on your personal needs and preferences. They are each quite excellent despite their respective pros and cons.
But if you want to unleash real power over your information and are willing to understand how pages, databases and formulas work together to do some pretty incredible things, Notion is the only way to go.

what about onenote. i mean its free and gives all features, why go for all these notion and evernote. I installed evernote just now cuz one note is a bit heavy and takes time to load but same is the case with evernote and it cant even be accessed without internet.
if productivity is actual goal why not one note
my opinion is, im not realy sure but if u need outlook or microsoft id for one note and u only have Gmail, ppl tend to prefer evernote instead of making and managing a new email id.....

I've never wanted to do anything at work or in my personal life that I could not accomplish quickly and easily in Evernote. I guess if you need some specific whiz-bang feature, you might need some other app.

I generally prefer to use a combination of Logseq and Obsidian, for my note-taking and long-term storage of ideas. While I have both Evernote and Notion, I prefer to use the latter for my online notes and my project management. I barely use Evernote, to be honest, other than for collecting things I want to save that don't related to any of my active projects.

Evernote was terrible. I used to keep my clients notes on Evernote and then Evernote just started deleting them randomly if I went to my client file and tried to type. Evernote nearly destroyed my business

@@career-guide I use Notion and Google Keep, but I want to start to move away from Google Keep. I've been hearing good things about a free and open source app called "Joplin" that unhappy Evernote users are switching too. It has a good webclipper. I downloaded Pocket and Instapaper the other day, I plan to try them out, figure out which one is better, etc. Do you like Pocket more than Instapaper?

Thank you for sharing your experience. It is great to know. I have been using Pocket for years and I truly love the extension on chrome and the UX. Since I have been using it only, I can’t compare to the other apps because I haven’t switched. I am very happy with it and it is a free app. Give it a try and please come back and share your experience. I would love to learn more 👍
