ART SOUVENIRS by BEBEBOY AGUIRRE | MALATAPAY | ZAMBOANGUITA | PHILIPPINES
Bebeboy Aguirre has his souvenir stall on the access road, right at the start of the small harbour area for boats to the nearby island of Apo. The special thing about his stall is that he makes almost all of his souvenirs at home.
These include large wooden carvings such as rice gods and masks, which he makes with a chainsaw. He collects the wood from a riverbed where it washes up after rainfall because it is already dried and therefore no longer cracks.
He makes other things, such as pendants for necklaces, from synthetic resin. His latest projects are rather large monitor lizards, which he creates in a very natural way and which can already be seen and bought in his souvenir stall.
Hangings, chandeliers and curtains made from shells can be bought at the souvenir stand.
Bebeboy Aguirre is always open to customisation, whether it's a bamboo ashtray, a pair of wooden lion heads or decorative concrete work or murals.
We, Gary the photographer and I the videographer, had the privilege of watching Bebeboy Aguirre at work in his home. We had arranged to meet him at his souvenir stall on a Sunday morning and he wanted to take us to his home in the mountains of Zamboanguita. He had already prepared some things for us.
His house, surrounded by corn and rice fields and several houses belonging to other members of his wife's family, is not easy to reach. The road is unpaved and gets narrower later on, so we have to leave the car and walk for about a kilometre through fields and bamboo forests, crossing a stream along the way.
But that was by no means the end of it. We were treated to Filipino hospitality, shown the cattle suffering from drought and the land parched by the sun. Father-in-law and the water buffalo have started ploughing the land for corn planting. At home, his mother-in-law makes cigarette tubes from dried lumboy leaves. A phenomenon that more and more smokers in the Philippines are turning to.
Come with us and we'll show you how Bebeboy Aguirre and his family eke out a living in the mountains. Keep this in mind if you want to negotiate the price. Almost all his offers are unique and made by himself.
You can contact Bebeboy directly at his stall in Malatapay, Zamboanguita, Negros Oriental or via Facebook at
