Watching this I realized there was only one real cringe moment I had in highschool. I was at a mini con and I saw a haruhi cosplayer. Asked for a picture and for some weird reason a hug. She said no and it was awkward for everybody. Years later I met that cosplayer in college and we became friends. When I realized who she was I apologized but we ended up laughing about it.

How times have changed lol. I created an Anime Art Club at my school last year for weeb solidarity and to teach kids how to draw. It's actually been great- we've got a regular turn up of people and we do fun art projects together (atm we're doing glass paintings). Also literally half of us play genshin so it's practically a genshin fanclub in there.
*Our club doesn't have those 'bad apples' tho haha😅 just a bunch of slightly awkward introverts

@@geoguessrplayer1 aw :') I wish you could join too~ If you don't have a weeb club (that's our informal name), then you can always be the entrepreneur and start one up urself! That way it can be exactly as you envision it to be.
I wonder if you all know how lucky you all are. I was in the transitional period where anime was picked up by the big and strong people, but people were still making fun of weebs, geeks and freaks. Hearing what people had to go through before my time, I'm lucky. Life is easier.

It can be pretty hard sometimes, especially at first, but I believe that optimism and enthusiasm go a long way (I'm not optimistic acc, only when it comes to teaching bc it helps others). I think the most important thing to keep a club going is the rapport you have with the students - just ask them about their day, what they're drawing at the moment, if any tea happened in class, and open up to them a little too- tell them about yourself, something random that happened to you etc. I'm an introvert myself, but I have a habit of putting myself outside my comfort zone as ik it's important for self-development. I also recommend dragging in a couple friends to help you, art friends too, so that you have a support network and not all the lesson pressure is on you. One of my friends was a lot more introverted than me and was really afraid to speak in front of a class, but as time went on they got more and more comfortable and they can now do so many more things that they were afraid to do before, it was really amazing to see their journey in opening up- so don't worry, keep going, as passion and some hard work and time can get you places! Don't know if this is helpful, but I tried.😅

about the strong passion to find others who were like you, I related to that bc my friends were into k-pop i felt like i was the only one who liked anime among them
I never watched anime, and I still don’t, but I think I was a weird and self-confident enough kid that I wouldn’t have felt ashamed for liking something like that. I mean, I proudly admit that I like the Green Lantern movie (starring Ryan Reynolds), and I used to threaten people with hugs (people who were being mean to my friends. I never encountered bullies until after I became an introverted shut-in). Hell, I used to roar like a monster every time I stepped outside for recess at school as a way to announce to my classmates and friends; “Hey! I’m free now! Let’s have some fun!”

Honestly this video always reminds me of how I asked my dad to buy me a body pillow with an anime character on it and I was like 11 and didn’t know if it was a bad thing or not but because I was so embarrassed about it that when I found it I threw it away 😭

Thanks for sharing this conversation with us. Y'all are in my age group so I do recall how it was not cool to say you liked anime. I did openly chat about anime with my small friend group in high school, I even helped start the first anime club at my high school. Those were naive and trying times for sure!

Here’s what I learned about being a weeb back in the day. You weren’t weird for liking anime, you where weird for trying to do their super moves during recess.
The first instance of anime I was introduced to was Spirited Away, and then the Naruto episode where the trio first meets Orochimaru, who creeped me out. I was ten when I watched Spirited Away and then twelve when Naruto came into my life.
