Amtrak Empire Builder DETOUR

  • Amtrak's Empire Builder typically splits into two different trains in Spokane, Washington, with one section of the train traveling along the Columbia River to Portland, Oregon, and the other, usually longer, section of the train proceeding mostly west across the Cascade Mountains and into Seattle. However, on rare occasion, the train is not split in two and the entire consist continues on to either Portland or, more often, Seattle. In this video, we'll get a rare glimpse of the full length Empire Builder running as one full train across the Cascades over Stevens Pass on a few different trips into and out of Seattle.

8:01 I have to agree with you here Mike, I think the Phase VI and VII is possibly the best and most eye catching lash up any railroad can ever create anywhere in the world

As someone who always missed Phase III, I have to admit Amtrak really outdid themselves this time. They really put some thought and care into how this could work with their current rolling stock.

When you get the chance, you should visit the Yakima Valley Subdivision. It hasn't been documented very much and I would love to see some trains on that line.

Hopping the next gen Amtrak cars will have some sort of Battery back up system. I have had to be towed twice due to a similar loss of car power situation. It's Extremely debilitating specially in the middle of summer or winter and it usually causes a multi-hour delay as the host railroad has to spin up a crew and find a locomotive to tow the train the rest of the way.

Your final scene is the best scene of all. Seeing one rail company using another rail company. BNSF makes a lot of money from NCTD Coaster & Amtrak for using their locomotives.

I wonder if Amtrak has studied more train splits, specifically the CA Zephyr in Salt Lake. With a portion heading to LA via Las Vegas. Therefore restoring service to there and Southwest Utah as well. Then again I can see Uncle Pete and thier Amtrak hating dispatchers muking this up as well.

When I saw the word "DETOUR" in the title I thought the train was using an alternate routing through a different mountain pass (like, through Ellensburg and Yakima instead of the usual routing through Leavenworth and Everett) due to track work, not unlike the Zephyr running through Cheyenne and the Overland Route when the Rio Grande route is closed for work

Not true. The California Zephyr still uses them exclusively and will for a while as Denver Station refuses to supply DEF tanks for the charger locomotives (why I’m not sure) so until something changes, only P42’s run the Zephyr route…
