Amtrak Springfield Line Trains

- Amtrak’s Springfield Line travels approximately 60 miles between New Haven, Connecticut and Springfield, Massachusetts. Originally constructed in the mid 1800s and later owned by the New Haven Railroad, the route was sold to Amtrak by Conrail in 1976. Today, the Springfield Line plays host to three different Amtrak passenger train services as well as Connecticut Southern Railroad freight trains and CT Rail Hartford Line Commuter Trains, which are operated by the Connecticut Department of Transportation. In this video, we will travel to Connecticut to take a look at operations on this busy rail corridor. Several different Amtrak trains use this rail line including the Vermonter, Northeast Regionals, and New Haven shuttle trains.

I really hope the Springfield line gets a New Haven - Boston line style electrification makeover soon.
I hope so 2
I hope not
with the arrival of ario train sets it's a moot point because the new sets will have dual mode locomotives which will eliminate engine swaps
It's always possible!
❤❤😮😊
those little shuttle trains with the cabcars sure are interesting - certainly not lacking for power
They're pretty unique!
@@CoasterFan2105I’m surprised Amtrak not using new ALC42s to pull the shuttle trains
Springfield Amtrak Trains Looks Very Great
They're pretty cool!
Nice video. Happy veterans Day. 🙂🤙🏻💖
Many thanks!
Hello Mike, great video from the Amtrak Springfield Line with very interesting Amtrak passenger trains and the P42 locomotives. Thank you for showing us and best regards from Germany.
Thank you, Wolfgang! Glad you enjoyed the video.
Hey Mike, I’m just glad for this video of Amtrak at Springfield thanks for all of your videos and support.

Glad To Visit My Railfanning Iine In Connecticut
It was great to visit!
So happy you visited my area! Great to see someone as popular as you visit a line quite small and unpopular compared to others!
Happy to do it! There should be another video on the CT Rail commuter trains coming out at some point as well.
1:44 Whaaaat??? I didn't know they have a shuttle consist that services past north of Springfield all the way to Greenfield! That's super cool! Great to know!
These are nice catches. Keep up the good work.
Thank you, I will!
@@CoasterFan2105 Nice!
Fantastic vídeo 🤩
Thanks!
Great job cf2105! Awesome work
Many thanks!
YESSSS! SPRINGFIELD LINE REPERESENT!!
About the same setup used for Amtrak’s Empire Corridor (which I rode about a year ago), but still cool. :)
I also like some of the improved trackwork.
It's a neat rail line!
Great catch
Thanks!
This is an awesome video!! Love seeing those Amtrak amfleet cab cars
Cool Amtrak Trains.
Thank you! It was neat to see them!
Nice video. I rode the NH&H back and forth from Springfield to New Haven growing up. 🛤️
Thank you! That must have been pretty neat!
Hey glad to see you come down to the route 🤘
Awesome Video. We hope you enjoyed your stay in Connecticut. There are many interesting locations along the NEC and New haven line here, as well as lots of Short line/Regional Railroading.
Thank you! It was great to spend some time in Connecticut.
Thank you for this great content ❤️ I wish I would reach that level one day
Thanks for a good video and happy veterans day
Thanks for watching!
I live near the line! Thanks Mike.
i like cabcars. it great to have the Cabcar back in service
They're pretty neat! Thanks!
Costerfan I used to watch you when I was a kid
Thanks for watching!
Nice documentation and info there Mike, nice work! (Dave).
Thanks, Dave!
@@CoasterFan2105 you're welcome
Two-car trains love it! Does Amtrak or any commuter train (not light rail) operate one car trains? Not counting DMU-type services
None regularly that I know of. These are pretty much the shortest!
SO NICE!!!!
Thanks!
that's real awesome I live about 15 minutes from the Springfield line ...... fun fact in 1984 in a cost cutting move Amtrak ripped up the second track only for it to be reinstalled a few years ago with the advent of CT rail service.... in the video the track with the concrete ties is the new one . also several new train stations were built along the line with Berlin and Wallingford as a few examples
Very cool, I didn't know that!
wow so fantastic❤❤❤
Thank you!
no problem❤❤❤👍😊
Oh and also my favorite Amtrak train is the one that has the American colors and also words on its sides that says connecting America for 50 years that’s my favorite Amtrak train with the best words for America
Nicely done!! Quite ironic that many crossings in this video STILL use mechanical bells
Its nice that they do
@BalloonBugle88 yup. Although all the mechanical bells at Horn Alley in Portland, Oregon are gone, at least the older E bells are still around
Thank you! It is interesting to see a rail line with so many mechanical bells still! It's like going 20 years back in time.
@@CoasterFan2105for real. I mean, literally over half of mechanical bells at crossing across the country were replaced with newer E bells, and i was expecting the NEC to have a similar thing as it's THE busiest passenger line in the entire continent, BUT NO. Keep them all in mechanical bells, even to this very day. GENIUS
@@adventuresofamtrakcascades301 my guess is that it’s owned by Amtrak. Amtrak has mechanical bells or older crossing equipment on a lot of lines that they own
Thanks!
Thank you so much! Really appreciate it.
I’m surprised that these small Amtrak trains haven’t been discontinued yet, considering the Kentucky Cardinal and Lake County Limited were discontinued.
3:33 the metroliner cab car sounds like an amtrak surfliner cab car😆
That particular cab car used to run on the same route as the Surfliner back when it was still the San Diegan!
Pretty soon the spring field line is getting Siemens venture cars and a newer Siemens alc42
I really like how there's literally no E-bells on any of the crossings on this line
It's like stepping back in time!
8:44 I think this is the first stop on red signal sign I've seen outside of Michigan.
They are definitely pretty rare these days.
I hope to ride the Amtrak shuttle one day. Those metroliner cabcars are interesting! We dont have those on the West Coast
I live near the line and have rode the shuttle often.... when the engine is leading you can sit close to the cab controls
They are neat cars! Some of them were in service on the San Diegan from about 1988 until 2002.
Hi Coasterfan! I love Amtrak trains I so badly wanna go to California. Im 🏴 btw
Thanks for watching!
Amtrak’s Springfield Line between New Haven, Connecticut and Springfield, Massachusetts.
Nice video Mike!
Thank you!
went the day before and saw the MP15 in New haven amtrak layover yard with 145 on the back of it
Awesome mike 😀
Thanks!
Cool 😎
Thank you!
@@CoasterFan2105 you’re welcome 😇
Les,goo,im 43 here
These cab cars were in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002
we got a rare footage of Amtrak 539
Nice
Nice video I have always wonder why those trains have weird consits
Nice bro!
Thanks!
COOL!
Man I wish they never touched 86’s previous K5LA from late 2021 it’s new Raised Letter isn’t good and not even in tune, it’s old Narrow Font was very nice sounding I really wish they left it alone but it is what it is. Overall great video and I always appreciate the educational commentary about the routes!😊
Thank you! I do miss some of the older K5LAs too.
@@CoasterFan2105 You’re welcome! I do too it definitely bothers me when Amtrak replaces the healthy sounding ones with no defects, if it ain’t broke they shouldn’t fix it 86 was definitely a Gem for a very short period of time it only kept that Narrow Font in late 2021 and it got replaced sometime early 2022.
Happy Veterans Day Mike Armstrong I think we should do a video documenting the Metroliner cab car units as time is starting to catch up with these classic control cabin cars they will soon be replaced by HHP-8 electrics that are being converted into non-powered control units and much like the F40PH NPCU units they will have the prefix 90 added above the already existing number
Thank you! I will probably do a metroliner cab car video once they are retired. When that happens remains to be seen.
@@CoasterFan2105 yes as far as I know there are only a few of the HHP-8 NPCU units that have arrived to the north east but currently they’re only still in the testing stages right now they are still being rebuilt down at the Amtrak Shops in the south states I forget where though so there’s still plenty of time to see the Metroliner cabin cars in service
Nice catches cool metroliners and are the people in Springfield yellow get it
Thanks for watching!
What about the shuttle trains? Will they receive venture cars , venture cab cars and ALC-42 chargers from Siemens too?
I probably might take the Vermonter hopefully sometime next year before the retirement of the Genesis locomotives
Nice! You should still have a few years to do it.
BRO AT 5:31 BLUD KNEW
0:00 - 0:07 Is there a video clip of that train horn?
Cool video. I noticed, is that new 2nd track installed? Who owns the track entirely, Amtrak?
Thanks! Yes, owned by Amtrak and the second track is new.
Yes the 2nd track was for accommodating the then new CT Rail Hartford Line trains
Hi Mike Armstrong my name is Angel Rafael Huerta pretty sure you remember me because I text you before why I’m texting you it’s because during the video of the Springfield Amtrak train it’s that a shuttle train that you told us but during the video I spotted a train I had no idea that was in Amtrak A shunter with the numbers 535 I had no idea there was a shunter Diesel in Amtrak and yes I am your biggest fan and I love it when you show us Amtrak trains because those are my favorite was the best horn and best bells and they’re paint work and also coaches that also has a cab and bell and a horn oh and also maybe if it’s possible maybe we could make a Thanksgiving trains video and a Christmas trains video to ok talk soon.

🎉🌿🇮🇳🌿🎉
Nice Video!
Thank you!
How did u see 108 2 times in the same trip?
Hey Mike how’s it going what settings do you use for your camera?
It depends on what the light conditions are like. I usually like a fast enough shutter speed to avoid too much motion blur.
@@CoasterFan2105 thanks for your response! What about aperture?
What I don't understand is why there isn't better service from Springfield to Boston or Albany. The once-a-day Lake Shore Limited just doesn't work. Maybe the MBTA can step up to the challenge if Amtrak can't.
Madison Wisconsin is the CAPITOL...not Milwaukee....even though Amtrak does not come to Madison...why??? Good question....sad....
I wonder if he’ll go up to NH and do NHN or something
Some day!
Fillmore & Western 2023
Oh and the locomotive numbers are 108
good video, but there are TWO Valley Flyers, need to mention 90-110 mph sections, also no CT Rail Trains?
Thanks for the note on the Valley Flyer, I must've been looking at an out of date timetable. CT Rail is mentioned in the intro, but I also did a separate video on those trains in December of last year. As for the speed, I mention some of the upgrades done to the line in the CT Rail video but don't think I mentioned the increased speed limits.
Thamx!
Today is my birthday
ok?
