Can’t wait for the big video! Very cool topic. I’ve just started reading and watching more in Japanese - but can totally relate to returning to authors whose styles you’re familiar with. I found a great author in French for that, and it’s suuuuch a nice feeling to just read their voice comfortably
Thank you Valeria! It really is amazing how much easier it gets to read an AUTHOR over time. I feel like it's much less noticeable in your native language. I notice writers quirks so much easier in Japanese for some reason. Probably because I have to look them up so many times! haha
But yes, it's so nice when you get used to it and can just enjoy. =)

Looking forward to this. I've been using Satori Reader for a few months now and it was a struggle at first but I can feel myself turning a corner and it starting to becoming easier. You just have to stick at it.

In all seriousness, that movie is so good. The first time I saw it, I already understood Japanese, and watching that when you understand what he's misunderstanding makes it SO much funnier.

Love how Brian's mannerism appear to be very Japanese. I saw another video the other day made for Japanese people learning English. This Japanese woman that was being interviewed lives in the US and her English was great. And it was interesting to see that her mannerisms came across as Amercian rather than Japanese. As far as I can judge from my Dutch point of view. I think acting in a stereotypical way in your target language, even if it is just for fun, can give you a real confidence boost. I'm curious what you think about this subject.
That's an interesting question! Not to answer for Andy, but just to give my own thoughts, I think an important part of successful communication is interacting in the way the listener expects, and a big part of that is adopting the cultural habits and norms. It makes it easier for the other party to correctly understand your intent and anticipate where you are going. So, yes, I think it is absolutely a good idea to modify your communication style to fit the Japanese style when in Japan. When in Rome, right? :-)

Yeah. I can't even bring myself to START those any more. haha
I’m still a raw beginner in Japanese, it’ll be great when I can comfortably read it with a decent amount of vocabulary. I have other study commitments too so it’s slow work. Hopefully one day though it’ll all come together.

Do you think you could make a video tutorial on how to download anki? I’ve been looking for ages and can’t figure it out. ( i use apple btw so that might be why )
I like to watch anime with Japanese subtitles, it helps with my kanji, which I never really mastered. Good tips for improving reading! お互いに頑張りましょう！

@@ToKiniAndy Yeah I bet, I was super surprised when he talked about his problems while reading his book, but then he mentioned that he just got hit with a stupid amount of medical terms which totally makes sense haha
@@SkullcandyEdit One thing you learn when you start reading in a foreign language is how BIG a place the world is. There are so many little pockets of specialized vocabulary which, as a native speaker, you've had chance encounters with over your decades of life experience, but which as a language learner, you've simply never come across.
I like to use the example of ballet. I'm pretty sure if we started talking about ballet in English, there would some words I've heard a once or twice, and some that I've never heard at all. It's a little microcosm that I don't know anything about. If we had that conversation in Japanese, there would be tons of words I've never heard because I've just never talked or read about ballet before in Japanese. It turns out there are lots of little worlds like that.
In a lot of ways, after you get up to comfortable working proficiency in a foreign language, your task is to try to replicate those decades of experience you've had encountering all of these little pockets in your native language. Reading is a fantastic way to do that because it takes you to far away places and worlds you don't usually encounter. Some pages fly by easily, but some are like treasure chests of new vocabulary that slow you down a little in the short run but also fill in those gaps and make you stronger.
It's truly amazing how there is always something to learn. But that's also what keeps things so interesting! :-)

As soon as you said that it was about medical terminology I instantly understood the situation because I would have an extremely difficult time both in my native language and english to even understand those terms & I don't even wanna know how difficult it must be with Kanji etc.

Tbh I can still struggle with some books in English if the content is hard. The same is true for Japanese, especially as a second or third language

Monster! by Naoki Urasawa is a masterpiece of a manga, really all of his works are. You should definitely check it out, if you get the chance. 20th Century Boys is also amazing.

because I'm still trying to read child level manga but I was hoping to find hard Japanese novels when I feel ready for the challenge and that author seems like a good start

I just bought 57 books to try and read by the end of next year I'm already through 4 books in two weeks (even though it's meant for 1年生と2年生) working my way up to Harry Potter at the end. The なぜ?どうして? 科学のお話 stuff has been interesting to me. 😆

I've learn't all of my Hiragana,is it possible to read Manga?
It will still be very very difficult, but you can certainly give it a shot! I would probably try to pick up some more vocabulary and grammar before starting if it were me though.

Andy, I'm very curious to know what level you'd consider Hunter X Hunter? I think you'd enjoy the story, I highly recommend it!
Hunter x Hunter was one of the first manga I ever tried reading going no 9 years ago. At the time it was too hard. I'll have to take a look again! I know later in the series there are WALLS of text, but I imagine it's much easier than some of the other manga I've read, so it shouldn't be an issue. =) It's definitely one I want to read.
I guess now andy sir will have monster 🙂on top of his list 😂finally.

I know the end was supposed to be encouraging, but I found it pretty disheartening. I've been putting in a lot of time to my beginner's journey into Japanese and I really like the language, but my goals were to one day be able to read some of my favourite manga in Japanese for example. This person made a whole system to help people learn how to read, spent 28 years studying Japanese, and still struggles. I thought my goal of being able to pick up a manga in 3-4 years or so was not so bad, but now I'm thinking will I even be able to do it 10 years from now if the struggle continues for this long? D:
I love how both of them, especially andy, show ”日本人っぽい” body language and mannerisms such as "hm" placements and head nods.. shows how living abroad can change behavior on all levels
