A live, semi-improvised performance, all on hardware, and inspired by a new synth table for performances, plus a few new pieces of gear. I had been humming a weird rhythm in my head for days and eventually realized it was in 11/4 time, and captured it here. I also was missing the sound of analogue voices, so I broke out some of my favourite analogue synths and drums to comprise the song. But of course, a good analogue voice only gets better with some (admittedly digital) effects, in my opinion, so I added in a few favourites (Empress Reverb, Polymoon) and a few new ones (the Typhon's on-board effects, Strymon NightSky). Ultimately it's hard to make such pleasing synths sound bad.
Arturia DrumBrute Impact - Drums, drum sequencing
Squarp Pyramid - All melodic sequencing
Dreadbox Abyss + Strymon Ola + Empress Reverb - Pads
Dreadbox Typhon - Melody
Moog Minitaur + Meris Polymoon - Bass
Moog Matriarch + Strymon NightSky - Two arpeggios
Kenton MIDI Thru - MIDI through!
Written in a 48-hour period and recorded live, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

I was super impressed by this live performance. Most of the time I hear live synth performances, they sound like jams, interesting ideas, or additive loops. But your stuff sounds like an actual musical piece. I love it. Hats off to you.
oh, a new jay hosking video, let's look what's new on the desk this time...
If you wouldn't have written that the piece was in 11/4, I probably never would have noticed (consciously). I tend to like strange time signatures, but they're even better and more fun when they're not totally in your face.
Also, thanks for inspiring me not to buy more gear but to continue to delve deeper into the gear I have.
Wise words indeed
This tune still send the warm fuzzy wawes up my spine ,- I love the way you are making this planet better with....music .... And we DO ....make the planet better ...with music.... And to THAT .... Ill drink
.. Cheers Jay 🔥🍻
I'm a bass player. Just found your page.
This is great stuff. I keep vintage Fender Basses to try and fill the bottom because they are dirty, imperfect, grizzly.
Always been jealous of Moog. Especially the minitaur. It fills the low bass space completely and effortlessly.
Thank you for sharing this. 👍👍❤️
I watch this video weekly. Your patches are worth studying
Kinda "Morning Bells" (Kid A, what an album!) vibes! Cool
Wow.
As a big piano nerd, I’ve been trying to get into synths and have had a hard time. On CZcams, synths feel more like knob-turning sonic exploration than actual music. Rarely is there a MUSICIAN playing a synth. This is what I’ve been wanting to find.
Spot on,-
the thing i love about your videos is a lot of the time you have a full arrangement of sounds in a mix. with the drumbrute in particular it's frustrating to try to get examples of how it sounds as a part of a larger mix when most of the videos out there jamming with it just have 2 or 1 instruments and sometimes people are just jamming on a lone drum machine. it's so nice to actually hear how it sounds as a part of a full mix in this video.
Jay your jams are always nothing short of inspiring, this is no exception, keep on rocking in the free world.
Beautiful set up! More importantly, very creative and well balanced. Cheers!
I love how punchy the Drumbrute Impact can get! Definitely on my buy list.
This make me crying and sobbing of Joy ,-
That was impressive. I thoroughly enjoyed that, rewind and played it again.
That moog looks like a beast O.O
Nicely made video with a running commentary which gives it an informal quality, great mixture of boutique synths and effects and a great track to demo them. Well done 👍🏻
Another superb track Jay. You never fail to impress! Another highlight as to why you never see an Abyss on Ebay! Love the 11/4 too!
Fuck dude. You're great. Totally buying your music now. Thanks!
WOW! the ''let's turn it up a bit'' last section had me bopping. It's 3am here in the UK and I really, reeeaally should be in bed but goddamn.
This is beautiful, love the initial 11/4 beat!
Omg those Dreadboxes sound so gorgeous!!! Also this tune is so good it has been stuck in my head no chance of leaving
I'm in love with this sound.
I just picked up the Typhon, and it's great to see the nuanced sound you're bringing out with it.
Lovely stuff, hope to see more~!
This is genuinely one of the coolest sounding things I've heard in a jam
That song bring me to my childhood! Thank you Jay
Beautiful song
Watching (and listening) to your YT videos has always been and still is inspirational. Thank you very much for the time you put into these. Love your vibe :) Keep it going 🙏
This is incredible :O Such warm and ethereal tones!
The Matriarch through the Nightsky sounds good... thanks for that Jay. 11/4 is interesting but i would not have known if you didn't tell us!
Simply amazing! My wife and I were jamming out to this. So good.
Nice jam ! I've had the pyramid for 2 years and still learning new tricks , love it
Lovly music❤
Was excited to see this in my recommended list!! Captivating sonically and Visually as always!
Excellent
I loved it ! And also I like how you explain what's going on in your jam :D
man,
this is dope.
The live performance is really on point, and i also found myself in your littles texts ahah.
Keep on rollin
Great work on this jam! I always enjoy your on-screen commentary.
I played with a DBI today at GC. Later a quick search to learn more led me here. Now I have no choice but to buy all this gear I guess! Thanks for the inspiration.
Bellissimo!! 🤩
Man this is some great music! There is just something special about analog!
Excellent Jay, well done. Works without doubts, thanks.
very nice track and a cool setup. i confirm everything you say about the drumbrute impact. plus its built like a tank providing great haptic feedback. - and yes, excellent session.
Really love the bass you get out of the Minitaur!
Drums remind me of Morning Bell! Love it!
Love the use of the Matriarch
Killing it, Jay. I lovvve the Drumbrute's snare!
Excellent stuff as always Jay, thank you for this lovely journey. 🧡
Great video!
awesome !
Absolutely incredible man. Just magnificent 🙏🏼
So beautiful, especially at 3mins, I'm in love :3
Great track! Always admire arrangement and mixing in your tracks!
Clean setup and nice jam!
imagine this mixed in stereo.... definitely subbing!
Inspiring, everything is so well crafted. The snare might be a bit too in-your-face sometimes, but that's the Impact for you.
This jam is fucking tight.
BTW, don't know if you'd be into that but live streaming on Twitch while noodling with your gear would be freakin cool to watch. Just chilling, sipping a drink, interacting with the chat,... I'd use my monthly sub for that in a heartbeat!
This is cool, Jay. Great work as always
Beautiful. As always awesome.
when the Abyss comes in, so good..
man this is so fun to watch
Very cool man.
Setup: 6850 €.
Mr Hoskings skill: priceless
From that setup I got only Typhon. lol

Wow. Really really good mate!
I think that one's my favorite. Sheer fun.
I wish the Abyss was still available.
Sounds great!
That was fucking wicked mate!
i was thinking about selling my dbi. but it has to stay. just the fm drum alone sounds so cool.
nice one jay ✌️
Nice
Merci et bravo !
bravo!! I'm subscribing.....
So good!
Wonderful jam! Was considering a Grandmother, but you're making me want a Matriarch!
Had a Grandmother, sold it to buy a Matriarch while it was on sale. Will never regret that decision. matriarch delay is killer. I use it more often than the delay on my magneto. Don’t really miss the grandmother verb at all and 4-note paraphony is extremely beautiful bc you can get different tones out of each not in a chord. Thought it would be a limiting factor not having full polyphony, but I can get really unique chords by having each paraphonic voice use different waveforms. Way more features to go into as well.
@@bingbong7927 If I had the space for a Matriarch I wouldn't have sold mine. A beautiful machine. Some day....
😭 .....so.....beauty......full......!
brilliant!
you are so fucking talented
Bad. Ass. Thanks for this!
Solid stuff!
woooooooooo 3:42 was so nice man. I love your videos
This is incredible. Alright. I’ve had a sub phatty for a while but besides that have had little experience with synths. Would the matriarch be a good next synth? Ive fallen down the rabbit hole of synth videos and want to learn more to blend it with my piano playing and learn more synthesis in general. Would love any recommendations. Synthesis seems very intimidating but man is it exciting!
Synthesis is incredible. The Matriarch will give you a little of many worlds (modular, polyphony, mono synth, a nice keybed), so it's a great choice. There are lots of options out there, though, and your specific criteria will be different from everybody else. Best of luck!
11/4 adds interest. 4/4 120 gets boring. I love the piece. 11/4 & 7/4 are my favorite time signatures. Easy to dance to. 💃🏼💃🏼😄
Hey Jay. Really enjoy your videos and the tracks are really good. I was just curious how you route the outputs of all your devices. Do you send everything into a digital mixer of some sort and then output to a DAW? Anyway I'm trying to setup my studio and getting ideas. Thanks man.
Hey thanks! I use a combination mixer/audio interface, so I can tinker and set up but not have to be running the DAW until the last minute. I have the Allen & Heath QU-16 but the Soundcraft MTK is also great (and I've heard decent things about the Tascam Model series). Best of luck!
"Dummy"?! You gotta be some kinda freaking GENIUS to be jamming in 11/4 time, man! But I'm thinking maybe you had a stroke at 3:40 when you switched to 4/4 "happy" time beat. Mercifully that passed. :-)
Hah!
Has an Ulrich Schnauss vibe
