Chicken Dal Khichdi - Quick and Easy One Pot Recipe - Masala Trails

Chicken Dal Khichdi is one of the most unusual yet delicious rice recipes. When it’s chicken and rice recipes, we often start with chicken biriyani and stop at chicken fried rice. Today we have a recipe where chicken is mixed with moong dal khichdi and cooked nicely.
Ingredients
Melted Ghee
1 tsp cumin seeds
3-4 bay leaves
1 star anise
6-7 cardamoms
6-7 cloves
3-4 green chillies
1 tsp ginger garlic paste
2 sliced onions
Salt
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp red chilli powder
1/2 tsp cumin seed powder
1/2 kg chicken
1/2 cup moong dal
2 cups of rice
Chopped coriander leaves
Method
In a pressure cooker add 4 tsp of melted ghee, 1 tsp cumin seeds, 3-4 bay leaves, 1 star anise, 6-7 cardamoms, 6-7 cloves, 3-4 green chillies, 1 tsp ginger garlic paste, 2 sliced onions, Salt, 1/2 tsp turmeric powder, 1 tsp red chilli powder, 1/2 tsp cumin seed powder and mix it well.
Add 1/2 kg chicken, mix nicely, add some water and allow it to cook for some time.
Add 1/2 cup moong dal, 2 cups of rice, chopped coriander leaves, mix nicley.
Fill the pressure till half with water, add 2 tsp melted ghee and cover it up, cook it for 4 whistles.
Healthy and delicious Chicken Dal Khichdi is ready, serve it hot!

Billa N Agree there. For an amateur cook like myself it gets hard to know what half cooked chicken looks like and what 20- 30% cooked looks like. It may seem like nothing to those who've had practice in the kitchen but for novices, it's enough to deter when cooking single handedly, with no help, and there's an impromptu get together of friends. These things can be mentioned in terms of time or certain obvious changes in the cooking process, like when the chicken and spice mix have come to a boil once or twice. It can be very helpful.

Is the rice soaked or dry going in to the pot? Also......what is four whistles? I use a pressure cooker quiet alot so is it, to max pressure turn down and max pressure again......for four times?

4 whistles? some places we meassure time in minutes. any suggestions how long is 4 whistle in minutes?
zdravkosim any luck figuring this out? I have a newer pressure cooker that does not whistle.
zdravkosim With pressure cookers the size, shape and material of the cooker...along with the load and size of the flame all lead to different cooking times. Best indicator thus is the number of whistles. Just follow her instructions and try to be polite. Hope this helps.
Dalia Abdulazeez Takey I think you may have bought a slow cooker...which are uncommon in India. These instructions will only be true for a traditional pressure cooker.
I wud say about 20 or so check at 20&adjust accordingly

well every one has a different style of cooking , But you put all ingredients so quick without mixing it well and onions are raw ?? mostly people make atleast golden brown the onion ... and no tasting at all at the end ?
Yes, I was just thinking caramelizing the sugars in the onion, just to golden brown, would add to the flavor.

Just a suggestion...please tie your hair back while you cook. You keep touching your hair and putting it back on the ingredients...which is not hygienic....sorry....I'm not criticising you...just suggesting.
