    There are 3 excellent faction mods that would definitely deserve a mention in a future video.
    Volkov Industrial Conglomerate (VIC): a faction that focuses on mobility and flexibility, with unique omni-shields that get wider when you point them towards your flank, and even more unique ship systems. The faction also offers genetic modifications that allow you to customise the appearance and skillset of your officiers and administrators, which is a godsend for minmaxers.
    Shadowyards Reconstruction Authority: basically the Rebels from Star Wars, except they have some of the coolest-looking ships available, with smooth shapes and beautiful blue-green paintjobs. Those ships include several battlecarriers, so if you love those, here you go. It also adds its own brand of orbital station, which few factions do.
    Dassault-Mikoyan Engineering: a corporate faction that comes with pretty white ships, lots of stuff lying around for scavenging enthusiasts, and a bonus faction of brand new AI ships with an emphasis on speed and swarming tactics.
    All of these are pretty well balanced, full of personality, and will add a lot of fun to your game.

    I miss Blackrock and the Knights Templar. Those two were essential mods for me before they went kaput. I also still remember playing the older mods that no longer exist when Corvus was still the only place you could play. There was a borg faction that I can't remember the name of, all I remember is that they had a megaship that was as big as several battlestations put together. I simply edit the capacity of the Prometheus in the files to be more reasonable, bumping it to 6k Fuel capacity makes it more usable in lategame fleets and it also feels like a more logical stat progression for a capital tanker. Did the same to Atlas and doubled it's cargo since it always felt weird to me how the only reason to use it was to save on ship slots, otherwise using colossuses was way more appealing, now it feels like you're getting value for the money you pay for it.

    Recently I have been particularly enjoying 2 faction mods: Roider Union and Legacy of Arkgneisis.
    Roider Union is a fantastic mod adding a faction of asteroid miners, similar to Hazard Mining Incorporated mentioned in the video. The difference though, is those guys aren't crackheads and actually kinda know what they are doing, resulting in much more refined designs that don't look like something hastily slapped together by someone whose circumstances of birth involved brother and sister liking eachother a bit too much. Their main thing is that they can refit civilian ships into their own designs (on the go, if you have the right ship), which makes it actually worthwhile to pick up all those civilian derelicts you might stumble upon while exploring. And if you have the Starship Legends mod, the reputation is transferred, so if you grew attached to your venture-class ship, you can give it a new life with the help of roiders. Also they send exploration missions and build outposts in far reaches of space, which is kind of neat.
    Legacy of Arkgneisis adds the "Anarakis Reparations Society" which are, in essence, a somewhat well-organised (but not particularly smart) faction of pirates/mercenaries. Their modus operandi is that any faction can just hire them to harass trade fleets of some other faction. Which usually results in everyone hating them. Also, their capital is a colossal ship floating through the hyperspace, which makes it difficult for player to find them. Except AI factions don't even pretend that they don't know where their capital is, resulting in hilarious situations in Nexerelin, where you can have entire konga lines of AI factions trying to conquer ARS capital. They come with a very neat looking, though admitedly underwhelming, ship pack. Absolutely recommended.

    • @Pilvenuga
      @Pilvenuga Před rokem +6

      YES! Been playing with both, because while some mods add cool ship designs which have overpowered ship stats - Roiders and Arkgneisis have stats that are balanced to vanilla, they just offer ship mechanics that are a sidegrade to your fleets. Plus, the whole space viking feel to Arkgneisis makes it a comfortable faction to go down towards playing as a pirate-aligned faction yourself. Roiders, however feel like survivalists against a hostile sector. Perfect.

    • @MrHitmancheg
      @MrHitmancheg Před rokem

      @@Pilvenuga I wouldn't exactly say Roiders feel like survivalists in the sector that really doesn't care if they live or die. Not when Brighton Federation HMI submod is a thing. Roiders kind of have their niche. They aren't strong, but they manage.
      Brighton, on the other hand, is positively fucked. Their ships are objectively fucking awful, their location sucks, they exist for no reason other than to be bullied by everyone even slightly stronger than them, which is usually everyone and everything.

It was adapted for 0.95 (and works in 0.95.1a) by a mad lad named bombasticmori after the original author, Nia Tahl, put a pause on updates (I'm assuming this version was done with Nia's approval seeing as the DL link on the Sylphon forum, page 31, has not been removed). The Star Federation and Hiigaraan Descendents faction mods are pretty cool if you're into FTL and Homeworld.
    Federation ships tech is a decent "Jack-of-all-Trades" sort of option with notable weaknesses. Hiigaraan ships are fairly OP but quite expensive to operate, but it's their weapons selection that justifies the mod as it fills in a lot of gaps for missile enthusiasts.
    VIC has some truly awesome ships and weapons in it too with an interesting approach to combat, and their weapons tech is very out-of-faction friendly without being completely OP. (unlike the Aurorans, whose rail cannon series is just straight up overpowered; Tana-II Rail Cannons are basically large weapon effect on medium turrets)
    Neutrino corp is an interesting faction for more corporate shenanigans, and has the Photon Torpedo missile tech in case you wanted to splash some Star Trek into the game.

    Your starsector videos are very entertaining and informative, and the production value is very high!
    I have some mods suggestions that may be of note:
    .LunaLib : In game UI for mod config. Most popular mods have support for it
    .Forge Production: Uses Domain Tech to add production capabilities to ships. It's very, very well made and goes well with a exploration oriented playstyle. Nothing like a self sufficient fleet!
    .A New Level: Increases the max level of the player while maintaining a vanilla level-rate. There's various options available, from level 20 to 40, and a fast version as well
    .Quality Captains: It rebalances the skill trees to make them more fun and worthwhile. But the main feature is that it's highly customizable, down to the individual effects. It has LunaLib Support
    .Random Assortment of Things: It's a megamod from the author of LunaLib that adds a ton of exploration content, the main points being the abyss (a new area with new items and powerful enemies) and consumable hullmods, which add even more options to customize your ships. Curiously, there's a abyss-like feature planned for starsector next update.

    Fantastic list, I've been using most of these myself already and they all add so much to the game! There are also a couple other faction mods that are very high quality, including Neutrino and Blackrock that have unofficial compatibility patches that work with the current version! Also, almost forgotten about Star Federation mod! I am a big fan of FTL and that faction mod translates the ships and weapons from that game very well into Starsector, to the point where the aesthetics fit surprisingly well into the visual style of the vanilla game.
    Also damn, you reminded me about the Superweapons Arsenal debacle. That one really left a sour taste in my mouth when I saw what happened. I don't think "petty" is quite the right word to describe it, it was the kind of shameless behavior I would've expected from a company like Nintendo and their team of lawyers, not from modders who are supposed to be the paragons of the community. Literally chasing the guy out of the modding community just because he might've used some other person's sprites as reference... It's sad, because the mod will almost certainly not be compatible come next patch, and it will end up being forgotten like many other good ones. And none of it had to happen if some people could just keep their egos slightly in check.

    • @dukoth6552
      @dukoth6552 Před rokem +4

      you should read the actual forum posts, he didn't use sprites as reference, he used portions of those sprites in his own sprites and when called out on it he vehemently denied it even in the face of proof, the sad thing is the starsector modding community shares, collaborates, and assists all the time, I'm sure those modders would've been fine with it had he just asked first, nor would removing the offending sprite portions have been all that hard (we're talking about sprites so small you can count the pixels by hand), but for some god damn reason the author decided this was a good hill to die on
      pride go'eth before a fall

    • @RiskOfBaer
      @RiskOfBaer Před rokem +7

      @@dukoth6552 I read the forum post, even better I looked at the exact sprites in question. The one part the author admitted to have re-used has been removed and apology was given. The rest was not stolen from another modder, the parts of the sprites that were similar were only that, similar. And there is nothing wrong with using aspects of other people's work as reference to create your own, it is literally completely normal for artists to do this. Besides, we're talking about free mods for a video game, not a paid product. Ensuing a Witch Hunt over something so insignificant is absurd and a sign of a massive ego trip. No wonder the author was annoyed by all of it, I would've been too if I had to deal with nonsense like that...

    Scy Nation, Machina Void Shipyards, and FSF are three great faction mods I recommend.
    First has a completely different tech vibe, which stands out in a good way. Second is sleek and deadly, with a good focus on reloadable missile weapons (less powerful then their vanilla counterpart, to balance it out) and drones. Third is about bulk, daka, and missile spam.
    Each of those mods have goodies that will fill in small niches you didn't know were lacking. For example, Scy Nation introduces the best large flak gun there is to have. Middling power against ships, but it has great range, AoE spread, and will dunk the rate of fire of enemies caught in the blast radius. Very Battlestar Gallactica sort of thing. Good complement of energy weapons with nice side effects.
    MVS has a wicked assortment of fighters, drones, and bomber, and probably one of the best battlecruisers out there, something like a bigger, militarized Apogee. The battlecarrier is also sweet, for 'Ace Combat' reasons.
    FSF has, bar none, the best missile capital ship out there (also one of the best missile cruiser), but also doesn't lack daka for its battleship and most of everything else. They really don't know the word for energy weapons.

      Their mod page should fill you in. Between the three factions, maybe the one you should expect least form in terms of total content is FSF. It's got a dedicated ship lineup and somewhat comprehensive weapon library, but overall maybe about half the content of MVS and two-third of SN.
      I also personally don't use busted mod factions.

    Only got around to watching this now, because I play the game maybe once or twice a year for a couple weeks straight, when i'm not busy with work.
    I had found the UAF mod through your video, and it is my number one go-to. Every mod I install is based around how well I can make it work with UAF. DME was my other one I'd like to pair with it, before I found out it has been removed. Because of how little time I have to play, I usually use console commands to play tall and skinny. Plan out an entire fleet or three using the Fleet Size by DP mod (1000 cap, then mod battle DP to 1000 cap (500 per side)), add ordnance points to absolutely OP them by adding every hullmod and weapon/wing i want (plus 5-6 S-Mods), fully load them up with supplies, fuel, crew, marines, and basic supplies, and look for a nebula to spawn, as it usually has about 12 colonizable planets. colonize the whole thing, use console commands to spawn in the industries and slightly tweak the conditions to get a 'balanced' system that is self-sufficient, improve them all, omega/alpha cores all-round, install items where possible, and then i WAIT.
    I get friendly with a few factions i like, and i wait for the inevitable development and aggression from the non-AI factions. yes, i basically cheat, but i am nowhere near invulnerable. did a battle recently, went in with 4 supercapital-class ships. about 20-30 seconds in, still havent reached the enemy fleet, 3/4 of my ships dead. nuked by a single artillery looking shot. 10/10 would get nuked again.
